Hi Derek

I wonder if you could help me with the Longford Neals ....specifically John Neal 1805. Most people try to link him to William & Ann (Wall) but I'm not so sure. I can trace back though birth certs and marriages all the way to William Neal & Ann Colebourne and then PR to John & Elizabeth Spendlove but after that....I can't find an actual link to the well established trees

There is a John Neal baptised August 1808 in Elvaston to a William and Ann but then there is a burial of a John Neal in October 1808 in Elvaston as well, the only Neal entries amongst a sea of 'Walls'.

The 1851, 1861,1871,1881 census clearly say 'Tutbury' in later years and the 1841 census has John (not born in the county) living literally next door to Thomas Neal & Grace Middleton.

Whilst there doesn't appear to be a Bishops Transcripts entry for a John Neal for around 1805 in Tutbury/Marston On Dove - searched at Lichfield - there are ones for Joseph, 2nd October 1803 and Sarah, 19 February 1804, to Thomas and Grace Neal

John Neal & Elizabeth Spendlove married in Dalbury Lees 1828 and their first son is Thomas (not William) 1829-1835.......

The temptation to play 'Ockams Razor' is of course enormous but I really, really want to find some proof if I can, any advice???

For those who are interested, Longford churchyard has gravestones for Thomas & Grace along with some of the Bridges and Hellabys

Lichfield didn't have Bishops trancripts for Marston on Dove for 1800-1805

I seem to remember the name Mary Hales for some reason, so we must have had her in there at some point and later he's changed it...

Hello Helen.yes I know quite a bit about the family.......The place is St Oswald Ashbourne Derbys............although the earlier history is at Thorpe by Ashbourne....at the entrance to Dovedale that I know very well...and love to bits......

RICHARD TARR baptised at Thorpe 14.06.1696..died there 12.05.1765..married MARY BOTHAM at Thorpe 06.04.1724.

They had six children (at least)..one of whom was:-

JOSEPH TARR baptised at Thorpe by Ashbourne 17.03.1730.who married ELIZABETH WOOD of Ashbourne 01.04.1753..and had I think 10 children..
Elizabeth's father was John Wood
Elizabeth died 01.10.1788.....one of their children was:-

WILLIAM TARR 27.12.1773 baptised St Oswald Ashbourne
..are you sure he married an Elizabeth??? my information is that he married MARY HALES 03.09.1796 StPeters Derby.........................first child Ann 1799 second child William 1803???..both baptised St Peter Derby...they were living in Derby 1841 and 1851
........William lived on..as you know living with his son William and Ann, and their children until 1858..and died in Derby

According to Probate Records he died 13.04.1858.and left effects of under £100.00
I could be wrong.....................but could explain why you cannot find Elizabeth...entered erroneously to my mind on an Ancestry Tree.......

EDIT:23.53......I see from the Derby Telegraph that WILLIAM TARR son of WILLIAM TARR was married to Marianne (Mary Ann) Waterfall of Ashbourn 17.06.1848

On later censuses William 1827 has followed his father William 1803 and his grandfather William 1773 into the Cattle Dealing business..and I see on the 1851 Census that William Tarr 1803 was indeed born in St Peter Derby as were all his children..living in 1851 with William 1773 his widowed father a cattle dealer from Ashbourne...........which to me shows that William 1773 was indeed married in St Peters Derby..........to no other than Mary Hales.......would be interested in your thoughts!

Hello Sally...........there were no Marriage certs before 1837..I had the same problem in my own family..you could send off for a copy of the Parish entry..but that wouldn't help you, so don't waste your time.
In my case it was the husband's details i wanted..which I got............but the entry gives only male spouse's Occupation..nothing else..no parents.nothing about the wife except her name and age............and that was1826..ans you're going back even further.
I will have a look at the parishes around Duffield for RuthClarke..but don't hold your breath!

Could you help me out with my partners tree. He is stuck on his 4th gr grandfather William Tarr.

William Tarr, b approx 1776 (census approx) , Alkborn?, Derbyshire, cattle dealer , died 1851 derby. wife Elizabeth.

Can you possibly find any information of his parents, and Elizabeth's maiden name.
We have two children -
William 1803 (married Ann Owens)
Ann 1799

Hello Sally............not doing too well on this one...........too many alternatives ,as you rightly said....

Richard Purdy (1731 West Hallam)married Elizabeth Blower(s)(1728)....at Sawley/Long Eaton 16.10.1752.........Isuggest that Thomas, hannah and Matthew were older than William 1761..because it is unlikely that Richard and Elizabeth waited nine years for their first child............I'm still looking.

I believe that William Purdy died in Basford District in 1838..............although Basford is in Nottingham, and is where I live, the Civil Registration District covers the Ilkeston area which includes WestHallam.....

EDIT 13.20.......I have the baptisms of the children of Richard and Elizabeth..(Richard Purdy baptised 29.09.1731 son of William and Jane):_
John 26.08.1753
Thomas 29.01.1758
Hannah 17.08.1766
Matthew 23.10.1771..all at Sawley/Long Eaton.have not yet found the baptism of William 1761.

Hello Potty..thanks for your message..I would be delighted to help if I could, but it seems that I have only the information that all the other kind helpers have found...and the information is very vague, with too many possible alternatives.

My information is that the marriage is probably the correct one,and it may well have been simply a Civil marriage. The marriage certificate would say where the Marriage took place.

Thomas Brindley and a Mary Ann LLoyd in Derby in 1867 (from freebmd; there is another couple with the same refs, so these two may not have married) and no idea if it was a church marriage or not.

Your right-it is nasty one. I do know the close locality of all these places-the Stanley's farmed in Kirkby-you will no doubt remember my search for Joseph Stanley (still unresolved!)
It does seem odd that the sons of Francis & Grace were baptised but not Elizabeth. Today I had the thought that maybe she could have been Grace's child before she married & known as Salmon but I haven't yet checked on that.
I believe Grace's maiden name was Ball.
I hope your 'magic' works!

EDIT Elizabeth's last child was born 1789 so I put her age as about 42-44 then hence the guessed dob as c1745

Hello Maureen..Yes..this is a nasty one...........I have the full Pinxton records, and there is no Elizabeth Salmon c.1745..There is a baptism 10.11.1771 for Elizabeth Salmon daughter of Francis..but that looks like Ann as mother...and in any case your Elizabeth was married to Robert Stanley 1766..and if it were not for that marriage.. it could have been an adult baptism.but it ain't!

MATTHEW SALMON married HANNAH STAINROD 02.11.1772..and appears to have had two children:-..Grace 28.11.1773..and Francis 22.10.1775

Matthew himslef was baptised 18.02.1749.son of Francis and Grace..and it appears that FRANCIS STANLEY..son of Robert and Elizabeth..married GRACE SALMON daughter of Matthew and Hannah at Kirkby in Ashfield Notts 21.02.1813

..so on the face of it , it looks like Elizabeth was sister of MATTHEW?.....EDIT..another brother for Matthew...THOMAS 07.10.1753.....but why Elizabeth was not baptised escapes me......

I am pursuing this........I don't know how well you know the area, but Pinxton is one side of the M1 and is in Derbyshire...Kirkby in Ashfield is a stone's throw away on the other side of the M1 in.............and when you come off at J28 ,you hit South Normanton,and turn left for Pinxton.........the two places are virtually side by side.

I'll get back to you as and when I get any magic going!!

I'm stuck-again! Can you find a baptism for Elizabeth Salmon c1745 in Pinxton please?
She married Robert Stanley in 1766 in Pinxton. Their son Francis married Grace Salmon so I thought she was probably related to Elizabeth. I found Grace's birth in Pinxton & her father was Matthew so then I found Matthew & his parents were Francis & Grace. Now, Francis, Grace , Matthew & John were the names of Robert & Elizabeth's younger children (John being the father of Francis Salmon). So I think in all probability that Elizabeth is Francis & Grace's daughter but I'm blessed if I can find a baptism! Perhaps you will be able to work your magic!
