hello Jean..this one seems fun!!

JAMES BRADBURY was born Bakewell 30.11.1748..married ANN PEECH 23.01.1770 at Norton

parents were JOSEPH BRADBURY and HANNAH HUDSON who were married at Norton St James 10.11.1748......then they shot off to Bakewell for a very hurried birth!!.

Hello Tina.....I have had a hunt around on your behalf......Dorothy HUNSTEAD appears variously as hunston and Hunstone

In the marriage record for 12.09.1826 at Swarkestone she is DOROTHY HUNSTONE. m JOHN NEWBOLD (a husbandman)

JOHN NEWBOLD was born Swarkestone 02.06.1804 the son of John Newbold and Elizabeth (also Newbold) who married at St.Michaels' derby. 29.03.1802

Since you are in Oz.I'm sure you know the rest, but I'll tell you what i found anyway..

Dorothy died 09.10.1855 Magill South Australia.....and John remarried 09.05.1859 to JANE SHIELDS of Second Valley (via Leith in Scotland)!

John died 15.04.1876..after having hordes of kids with jane.

I think Dorothy was born in Swarkestone (c1807) not Devon...anything else you think I might help you with , just shout.

All the best from a lovely spring day in Nottingam UK

Hi Derek, thanks for quick response.
Think you may have missed this answer re Priscilla Watts born c1830 Ilkeston, Derby
I have marriage cert for Priscilla Watts in Nottingham 1855 [fathers name James Watts, decd,] , full age, she married Joseph Sylvester.
Also b/c for son Joseh Watts Sylvester born 1849 Loughborough, Leics, mothers name Priscilla Sylvester, formerly Watts, father Joseph Sylvester.
I think I have her on 1851 census, living with Joseph and calling herself Sylvester, as she does on sons b/c] transcribed as Schlesser, says she was born in Ilkeston ,with son Joseph W Sylvester born Loughborough, Leics, who I think is my Joseph Watts Sylvester .It is this census which made me think she was from Ilkeston.
Hope this makes sense,
Molly

Hello Cheryl.......further to my PM's to you......this is pretty much how it goes.

WILLIAM SHARDLOW senior allegedly married a CATHERINE SYDDON around 1678.........this is from an unconfirmed source. She died 17.06.1707 at Aston on trent.

What IS confirmed by ASTON on TRENT Parish records is the following:

William 1680 married JUDITH 1708 at Aston and had the following children;

SARAH 1709-1720
JOHN 1712
COWPER 1717
MARY 1724

On 1501.1726 he married HANNAH SIDDON and had the follwong childen:

CATHERINE 1726
JOSEPH 1731-1812
WILLIAM 1731-1731
HANNAH 1734
REBECCA 1735
WILLIAM 1739-1825
MARTHA 1741-1745
GEORGE 1743.

you may already know this..let me know.

thank you now I have a year for the marriage i can order a marriage certificate thank you very much

Derek

Derek Report 11 Mar 2010 00:00

Yellabelly..........I think i may have solved this........As you say he is in Clay cross in both 1901 and 1911........He is a Coal miner hewer..born ,allegedly in Clay Cross.........He married Sarah in 1898

This may not add up entirely but bear in mind the Census returns are rarely accurate in terms of Birth dates

He is shown in 1881 born in Danesmoor. son of James and Eliza.....James is a Coal miner hewer! (aged 5) (and living in Danesmoor)

The same family is shown in 1891 living in Clay Cross..same father now a widower and the same siblings plus a few more, but he is shown born 1800.....which is wrong, but not surprising and a common mistake..Bear in mind that Danesmoor is close to Clay Cross and both were originally in the Parish of North Wingfield.
This is as close as i can get, but in my considerable experience i would suggest it is probably right.

Hi

I have a puzzle and it is driving me crazy.
Frederick Shaw married to Sarah appears on the 1901 Census at Clay Cross stating place of birth Clay Cross but I cannot find him anywhere before 1901 he was born in 1874/5.
In 1901 he has 1 child Alice by 1911 he has 4 children still living in Clay Cross.
I have checked the clay cross website and he is not there before 1911 and I have searched the census - it is like he just appeared.
can anyone help

thanks

Eileen Report 9 Mar 2010 11:02

Thank you so much Derek! It is a bit of a tangle and sad too because Selina married, (another Johnson) had 6 children. Both parents had died when the youngest Sarah was only 12. Poor Sarah ended up in the workhouse and the boys lodging around the area. History almost repeating itself with parentless children. Thank you once again for your most useful information.

Derek Report 8 Mar 2010 21:32

Hi Eileen.......SELINA BULLOCK was baptised 28.10.1842 daughter of Anne Bullock.........at Church Broughton.no father is mentioned.
However there is what appears to be a fairly accurate tree on Ancestry that give CHARLES SHAW as the father of not only Selina but of JOHN BULLOCK 1845 and ARTHUR BULLOCK 1848 also. They carry the name Bullock so it doesn't look as though they married...and there is no mention of Charles Shaw in 1851 Census..and of course he was not around in 1841........

ANNE BULLOCK was one of EIGHT children of JOHN BULLOCK 27.01.1795 of Stretton.amd MARY nee JOHNSON of Foston b 1793..they were married 07.11.1814..Anne was baptised 25.04.1822..

Hope this helps.
FOOTNOTE 21.39..something very odd must hqave happened.......like in 1851 the three children of Ann Bullock and Charles Shaw are living with their grandfather John.....but in 1871 both Charles and Ann..now married are living with the same John Bullock at Church Broughton.....Looks like she ran off and left the kids behind and married her long term lover.then came back once the kids had grown up and left........!!

Derek

Hello Derek
I wonder if you have Church Broughton on your records?
My Selina Bullock b 1843 (+-1) is in 1851 census with grandfather John Bullock. Her marriage certificate does not give a father and I cannot find a birth certificate.
Thanks

Derek Report 23 Feb 2010 15:45

Hello Audrey..I wonder how much you know about this family??? it's really quite odd.
I could find no mention anywhere of a marriage between these two...not easy when i don't know where Frederick came from..although i could assume that Elizabeth came from Derby...but couldn't find her...Ok..

So i went to Ancestry looking for Frederick Price 1855..one stood out, although he came from Worcestershire rather than Derby...He stood out BECAUSE he married MARY ANN RADFORD (1857-1903) in DERBY!!..in March 1877

So ithink..has Audrey got her facts right????? becasue they have EIGHT children between 1878 and 1897........living at St Alkmund derby in 1901......

Still no sign of Elizabeth 1872.....so i looked on the 1911 Census for frederick price 1855 Worcestershire.

BINGO....

Living at 49 Church Street Derby are FREDERICK PRICE 1855 Worcs..Bridge Plater (consistent with all Censuses)..and his wife of seven yearss ELIZABETH!!..plus their four children!!

He married Elizabeth in 1904 in Derby.......clearly the sister of his widow mary Ann!!

The old goat!!I iknow mary Ann was born 1857 and Elizabeth 1871..but with the size of families in those days..One is obviously the eldest and one the youngest!!
I have the same 16 year spread in my family!!

Any more you need??
EDIT 16.08..Can now confirm that both Mary Ann and Elizabeth Radford were two of SEVEN children of FRANCIS RADFORD (1830) and MARY ANN nee VICKERS (28.11.1830..at Littleover in Derby..What fun!!
