Hi Derek, noticed the query from Barbara and the connections with Kent. There is a fantastic site called Medway City Ark which has parish records to view on line for free for Gillingham and Chatham. Hope I am not too late for her to see this comment. She may already know of course, but worth a try! Cx.

Hi Barbara..here is what i have found about the NEWLABDS..there appears to be a very stron Kent connection..i.e Gillingham and Chatham.

FREDERICK JOHN NEWLAND 12.05.1887..son of John frederick Newland (a painter) and Emily Jane.at Smalley green.

Ethel newland daughter of John and Emily married Arthur Ernest Williams 01.04.1907..she appears to have been born 1885.

and there was another son of John and Emily...Harold Edward 12.04.1891

Ethel and Ernest had a daughter Alice Ruth Emmenlita Williams at Chatham in Kent 28.05.1911

Arthur Ernest had a father Joseph and was born in Gillingham......that's as far as i've got at the moment.

Derek.

Derek - you are a gem! Many, many thanks for that. Lovely man that you are!

Actually, just looking at my piece of paper with my scribblings on.....I have it that John married a Mary Prince -at Cheadle in 1853 (freebmd). Must be a connection there somewhere I suppose. Cousin maybe???

Will take another look in the daylight hours!

Thank you again. Cx.

Carol.the only Hinds i found at Lullington are as follows:

John Hinds buried at lullington 14.01.1853 aged 79..and his wife SARAH 19.01.1855 aged 73.

John was baptised 09.02.1772 son of Thomas and Sarah.

Sorry not be of more help.

Hi Cynthia.........your problem might be that Doveridge Ashbourne and Snelston are all very close together and right on the border with Staffs..with Alton just the other side.

Howver, you've come to the right place!!

JOHN MOUNTNEY was baptised 23.05.1829 at Doveridge..son of RICHARD and AMY (nee Prince) who were married at Alton Staffs 16.06.1828

RICHARD was baptised 02.06.1799 at Snelston..a few miles away, but in the same area....the son of RICHARD and ELIZABETH (nee GODSBY) who married at Snelston 10.05.1793

Good luck.

Derek.

Hi Derek, just wondered if you had any records for Doveridge in Derbyshire? I am helping a friend and the name I am chasing is Mountney. I have managed to get back to John Mountney born c1830 and I think his father is Richard Mountney born c1801 but not sure where as one census says Doveridge and another says Alton in Staffs???

If you can find anything on the Mountneys of Doveridge, I would be very grateful. Thanks. Cx.

Hello Alison...........spent a long time with belper Duffield and Alfreton records....all i found was:

HENRY WATSON 30.06.1912 son of William Henry and Ada.....

which might point to them also being the parents of Horace.

It's very difficult to troll through several different microfilms..particularly as the Golden Valley you mention is a tiny Hamlet, surrounded by any number of possible Parishes.......too much in one afternoon.

will continue to look around.

Derek.

Carol........I now have the Coton in the Elms Parish records..1846-1904..no mention of any Hines/Hinds.
However, prior to 1846 it appears that Coton was in the parish of Lullington, who's Records i don't have, but I'm off to matlock tomorrow, and will look.

Hi Derek,

Thanks for helping, if you could let me know the information you have on Samuel Marsh (1805), that would be useful.

I have been in contact with a distant relative, who is also doing a Marsh family tree. She has the father of Samuel being a William Marsh born in 1764 from Bolsover being the son of Jonathan Marsh born c1745.

However, I am not sure how reliable this is, as for she has a John Marsh born 1794, living in Bentley Yorskhire around the census in 1841, but I found a John Marsh born 1796 according to the census living at the Vicker's House Langwith

I have found on familysearch.org I have found a Sarah Marsh born at Scarcliff in 1743 to a Matthew Marsh and his wife Martha (batcch no. 7200615. If you can find any information I would be grateful. Does mean I am looking at three or four parsihes ie Bolsover, Langwith, Scarcliff and South Normanton, and how far apart of thes place geographical

Hope to hear from you soon

Regards
Mark Bumpsteed

Hi again Derek - re the Newland family in Derbyshire. Just discovered two more brothers who moved across there from Cambridgeshire.
Alfred Benjamin Newland born 1859 Kings Lynn - married Anna Cash on 26 Dec 1887. Would love to confirm his occup and who witnesses were. They had three children. When the fam left UK for New Zealand they left daughter Beatrice behind. She was born 1889 Normanton. (Bap date please). Believe she married either Wyles or Iliffe in 1908 Derby - sorry do not know the Parish.
Another Newland brother - Charles William born 1853 Cambridge - a painter. He married Elizabeth Ann Tetley in Derby 1878 (again dont know parish). Would appreciate the date and who the witnesses were. They had two children that I know of - Constance 1889 and Lilian 1894. There was possibly another one inbetween.
Derek, I would appreciate any info for the above to fill in the gaps
Thanks so much

Derek

Mark..additional to my message below.......it begins to look as if the family actually came from Upper Langwith, rather than Scarcliffe.because there are no Marsh births or marriages at Scarcliffe before 1762......so looking backwards for your earlier "brothers"....William 1778 son of Joseph and Sarah appears to be the last child of John and Sarah nee Cockayne who were married at UPPER LANGWITH 01.12.1761!!..the previous three children were: Betty 21.08.1762..Nelly 17.10.1764...and Joseph 21.02.1772.

I don't have the Upper Langwith Records, but I am going to the Matlock Records Office tomorrow, so will give them a going over.......

I think Joseph senior was baptised at Bolsover1742..but not confirmed.

Derek.

Hello Mark..have now got the Scarcliffe Records..and am busy assimilating them.......Initially what i have to tell you is that William Marsh 24.05.1778 and Joseph Marsh 21.02.1772..are brothers..and are sons of Joseph and Sarah Marsh.

Jonathan Marsh 26.07.1778 is a son of Jonathan and Sarah Marsh..

Your Samuel 25.05.1805 is son of William and Amelia....but at the moment I can't tie the two Williams up........William 24.05.1778 is unlikely to be Samuel's father because he started his family with his first son Joseph 24.01.1792........at the age of 14?? unlikely, but not impossible.
All this took place at scarcliffe, but by 1841 they were all at Langwith..which 'm sure you know..and i have the full history of Samuel ...which I'm sure you have.....If not..just ask.

Will get back to you with more.

Hi Derek,

Found your text.

So i wondering if you find any infromation about the Marsh Family in Scarcliff or Upper Langwith (is that Derbyshire), I found references to families belonging to William, Jonathan and Joseph Marsh in the 1760s -1770s. So I am assuming these are brothers born say in the 1730s - 1740s.

can you find any information relating to this, or to their parents, My relationshhip to them is through my Great,great-grandfather - Samuel Marsh (born 1805 in Scarcliff) on my mother's side

Regards
Mark
