Hi Rose...........I have been besieged in the past with requests to find links to Florence Nightingale..and the facts are that there are very few.......Ihave researched this in great detail................Briefly..here is the problem you're facing...........you have to find a link to (Mad) Peter Nightingale..the great great uncle of the lady who became Florence Nightingale.......she never married and had no children.............she had two sisters..one of whom married......and is traceable........the other is not.
You may or may not be aware that she was not a Nightingale.her father ,a nephew of peter Nightingale..changed his name to Nightingale in order to inherit the property left to him by his great uncle Peter Nightingale.......Peter died childless...........I suggest you Google Florence Nightingale to read the full story..........in order to get anywhere near her we have to work our way back to her father..who was not a Nightingale..and then back down to her.

It is possible to trace the family of Peter Nightingale..and I've done it, but it's a tortuous task.and any links to Florence are dubious at best and faked at worst........she had no descendants......
I will however look at you Nightingales to see where they lead..watch this space!

Derek thankyou for your time spent on the Hopkinsons, i don't know if there is any truth in what the family rumours are, but it's looking likely after what you've found. I was told that the family was related to Florence Nightingale, i'am begining to wonder now.

Thankyou Rose

Patricia Anne........further to my message timed 13.14.......

Interesting facts are emerging.......I have found MARY LOWE daughter of Thomas and Elizabeth..born 15.01.1825 littleover...they were farmers....at littleover......This mary lowe only appears on the 1851 Census..no other......she is single......and in 1851 there is no sign of her daughter Frances/Fanny......
JOHN CLEWS also appears on the 1851 Census..unmarried living with his sisters Charlotte and Emily..farming with two employees...two otherv siblings are still living elsewhere with father James.

Frances/Fanny was batised at Littleover 25.07.l852..the same date as Rosamund.....and APPARENTLY the same day as John and Mary married at Littleover.......Samuel Lowe Clews and Annie Clews were again baptised on the same day 04.01.1857

MARY died June 1859 at Shardlow.......

1861 John widowed is living with his four children and two female servants

1871 John is living with Samuel and Annie..and his sister Emily is his Housekeeper.

1881 John is alone with his daughter Rosamund..who is now his Housekeeper.....

1891 John has married Sarah A (born 1866)..and a child Emily Ruth was born in 1890

JOHN died in 1896

AND!!..by 1901 Sarah A Clews has married one SAMUEL JACKSON b 1864...htey have Sarah's two children by John Clews (Emily Ruth 1890 and John M 1892..................
Samuel Jackson has brought two children from his previous marriage and he and Sarah had a child Alice Mary in 1898 at littleover......

one of the reasons for the bad blood you mention..is probably because the CLEWS were staunch Wesleyan methodists.....and would cerainly have stronglt disapproved of the goings on between old John and Sarah!!

I can't find any of them as yet on the 1911 Census...which might support your idea of emigration.....

all the best.

ok..Patricia/Anne.........let's see what i know that you don't..if anything!!

Once upon a time........JOHN CLEWS and JANE (nee Roberts) CLEWS had at least two boys....James 1782 and john 1788

JAMES CLEWS 03.11.1782 (at Shirley) died 21.04.1856 and
MARTHA HILL of Alstonefield Staffs.....(died 03.02.1872 Yeaveley).....

..got married14.11.1814 at Duffield. They had the following children:
Mary and Ann both baptised 24.06.1816 (doesn't mean they were twins..)cos children were often baptised later and sometimes three four or more at a time..
JOHN CLEWS b 13.09.09.1820 bapt. 08.10.1820
Elizabeth 1826
William 1827
Martha 17.08.1828 bapt.07.10.1828
Charlotte 29.12.1830 bapt. 22.02.1831
Frances (Fanny) 30.03.1833 bapt. 07.04 1833Emily 23.05.1835 bapt.25.06.1835
Eliza 1839

JOHN CLEWS and MARY LOWE (some say LAWE!! had FRances 1850 Rosamund (Rosa) 1852
Samuel Lowe 1855 bapt.04.01.1857
Ann 1857

Still not entirley happy about the marriage date for these two.......

More later.

Hi Spruce........???? lol.............been looking at your Hopkinson lot....
Here is what I have for the moment.........

JOHN HOPKINSON B 1791 (Ashover) married MARY NIGHTINGALE (born14.04.1801 Daughter of Joseph and martha Nightingale)

They married17.04.1828..

Their children were:
Joseph Nightingale Hopkinson 19.07.1835
Frances Eliza 17.01.1837
Selena Maria 29.10.1839
John 1841

JOSEPH NIGHTINGALE HOPKINSON married Sarah 1868 and had the following children:

Mary Jane 1870
Martha E 1875
John William 1872
JOB NIGHTINGALE HOPKINSON 1877

Relevant Census entries are://1871 JOHN Senior (1791) now aged 80..is living with Joseph N and Sarah and Mary Jane.

1881 and 1891 not particularly exciting.but 1901 has Sarah hopkinson widow of Joseph..living with John William..Elizabeth.and Job N...which fits with your marriage date of 1905 for Job...I haven't found the marriage yet, because you say it is Registered at Belper means very little..Belper is a Registrtaion district for a large number of surrounding Parishes.........like Bakewell is a Registration district...........

hope this is more or less what you are looking for.

Hi sally..........sorry not to have got back to you..........your original enquiry talked of the Purdy's of Ilkeston..........so i purchased the Parish records for St mary's ilkeston and found no Purdy/s...........didn't really know where to go from there...........but you further information has given me a life-line.....and what mess!!............your Purdy's were born all over the place!!!..the first two at North Wingfield.....Frank and george at South normanton.............so at least I now have something to work on......and am making progress.
George and his wife Elizabeth fenner were living in hendon in 1891..as you rightly say and the other person in he house is Beatrice their six month old daughter.........

more tomorrow..

Patricia.Hi Anne........from the 1891 Census..John is given as aged 71..i.e. born 1820....the young girl he married Sarah......shown as Housekeeper was born 1866.and their daughter Emily Ruth Clews was born 1890.....their address is Burton Road Littleover....

As for Samuel Lowe Clews.the latest info i have is 1901 at Elm Farm Burton Road Littleover..where he is living with his wife Florence nee Clews....and a neice and nephew.....

I do have the full record up to 1901..but cannot find them on the 1911 Census...........you may wonder why Florence has the maiden name Clews..or you may already know..........but it will become clear when i post you the full Census records..either later tonight or tomorrow..
Briefly John Clews grandfather James had a brother John who moved to Tissington..and his grandaughter was the very same Florence Clews.......so they were either second cousins or first cousins once removed.

Hi Derek
Did you manage to confirm the marriage of John Clews & Mary Lowe?
Also I understand that after Mary died John employed Sarah Ann Fe(a)rn as nursemaid & then married her. I was given the info that she was 20 & he 65 which is slightly different from your version. Are you able to check? There was bad feeling between her & the Clews family & I was told she died in Australia 1st Dec 1935.
My father(eldest son of Mary Clews) was "adopted" by John's son Samuel & his wife Florence - also Clews. She was John's 2nd cousin. My father worked on their farm in Littleover until he married.
THanks for your brilliant help I'll get them all sorted out one day!

Hi Derek,

I wonder if you could check a marriage between William Wilkinson and Catherine Noton. They married 14 Oct 1790 Bakewell. I have mannaged to take Catherines line back but I am struggling with William. I am hoping that the witnesses might offer a way forward or that the parish records might state which parish William came from. I am guessing William would have been about 20 when he married.

Many thanks, Sandra

Patricia..further to my message below..Rosamund Ann was born November 1853..baptised Littleover 11.06.1854..daughter of Hohn and mary..............another entry..probably unreliable gives her marriage in 1884 to Joseph Jeffrey in Iowa USA.........

EDIT 19.34..I now have the full story of John Clews...his parents and grandparents..his siblings and his childre..and the fact that he remarried at the age of 68 to a girl of 25 and had a child in 1890 by her..he died in 1896.....never went anywhere near Ashbourne of birmingam!!..he live and worked on his father's farm .and then owned it till he died.......If you haven't got the details..let me know...

Hello Patricia...just had a quick preliminary look......

John Clews born 13.09.1820 baptised 08.10.1820......at Yeaveley....

married Mary Lowe 1850 in Derby...........I have still to confirm this.....but would fit with her being pregnant with her first child when she married......more than likely in fact..and rather smashes the idea that they married later.........

will get back to you
Edit 18.57..IGI says Fanny lowe was born 25.07.1852 extracted from Parish records..father John Clews mother Mary lowe........

Hi Derek
You helped me a while ago with the Ashby family. I wonder, if you have time could you help me with the Clews family.
John Clews (b 1820 in Yeaveley) married Mary Lowe (b 1825 in Littleover). Hearsay has it that they married on 15th Aug 1853 in Birmingham. This seems a bit unlikely but I have no evidence to the contrary. They had 4 children & it is the 1st two I have problems with.
1. Fanny Lowe is said by one GR member to have been born on 4th Jan 1850 - 4 years before they married - & another says Sept 1853 reg in Ashbourne 7b 416.
2. Rosamund Ann, possibly Dec 1853 reg in Shardlow 7b 298 - but this would not be possible if the 2nd date for Fanny is correct.
I think that they were farmers in Littleover after their marriage.
I should be very grateful if you could help
Anne
