Derek,
Most fascinating - as I didn't know Jonathan Marsh birth year or where born!
I wondering whether I came across something diisturbing about Samuel Marsh (b 1085). I just glanced at National Archive website (actually looking up my father's surname rather than my mother's.
However, did a search on Marsh and Langwith and came up with:
67/45-46 Hannah, wife of Wm. Bagshaw of Radcliffe, Worksop, labourer; attempted rape by Sam. Marsh of Nether Langwith, servant in husbandry. With sealed warrant for arrest. 27 Dec. 1824.
Cheers Mark

Hi Sharon..how sure are you of your facts?? Have looked high and low for your Mary Ann.I have the complete Ilkeston records..and whilst at Matlock I searched for alternatives.theONLY Mary Ann Aldread.or similar....in the whole of Derbyshire in that period was:-
Mary Ann Aldred baptised ilkeston 14.10.1832 daughter of Joseph and Ann.... How about mary Ann Alldread 1835 Duffield dr. of George and mary? Derek.

Hello Rose..sorry to keep you waiting......I could find no mention of Morton in the late 19th Century Hayfield Records...........which is not to say they are not somewhere in the vicinity..so many small places with their own Parish Records.......New mills hayfield Glossop Charlesworth Chinley to name but a few.......I'll keep an eye out for you, but its a massive job. Have found ELIAS MORTON son of Edward who married FANNY KING at Edensor 10.10.1842..I do have the Edensor Records if you think this is him.

Hello Mark..this is all getting VERY intersting.....Jonathan Marsh was apparently born in or around Belper in about 1735......details still to be checked..and married Sarah jarvis'not only was he relsated to your Marsh's..he was their direct forebear........Briefly it goes like this:-
Jonathan and Sarah had WILLIAM 01.10.1759 (died 25.12.1815 Scarcliffe)
WILLIAM married AMELIA (AMY) BROWN 27.01.1790 at St.Mary's Bolsover
Their son SAMUELb Scarcliff 1805 died Worksop 1886 married SARAH WOOD from gamston Notts..she died 1876 at Langwith Their children are all known to me and are on successive censuses
One of them WILLIAM 1835 died possibly in Sheffield 1901/2...and may have been a Pub landlord.....still checking this..
keep your head together, my friend, and get this all collated cos there's lots more!!
Derek.

No rush for the above, I am sure you have other people awaitng news

Hello Mark..just had a few days off......I have everything you need from Scarcliff.including the children of Jonathan and Sarah..........right now i am giving you what I found at Langwith........
The original records are very hard to read..extremely!!.and can understand how some peopl give up! However.
I can confirm the marriage (by licence) of Jonathan Marsh to Sarah Gervois at langwith 28.08.1764...........except that everybody who has transcribed Sarah as being a "Gervois" is wrong..including Family Search (IGI)..........Looking very carefully indeed at avery complicate script with all its extravagant swirls etc..it becomes obvious that the name is Jervis or Jarvis..............probably Jarvis.which may or may not help you.
One of the reasons that Jonathan Marsh is elusive is that he came from Clowne..not Langwith..Sarah comes from langwith.
Other findings at Langwith:- relevant or not.
30.08.1834 William Marsh baptised 02.05.1840 George Marsh baptised....... both sons of William and Sarah Marsh
Joseph Marsh married Sarah Cockayne bt banns01.12.1761
William Marsh married Sarah Butcher by Banns 20.08.1764
Jonathan Marsh (Clowne) married Sarah Jarvis by Licence 28.08.1764
Joseph Jarvois(Jarvis married Mary yates 29.10.1767
John Hallmarried Ann Knowles 04.12.1784
Samuel Marsh married Sara Wood 17.03.1835 (witnes jonathan Jervois/Jarvis!!)
I'll give you all the Scarcliff records as soon as i can.........
Derek.

Hi Derek Just wondering whether you have had any luck with the Morton's. We last found Elias on the 1851 census but cannot find anything for him before that......as Fanny's maiden name isn't listed we have become stuck!!! It's so frustrating as there are so many Mortons in that area. Thanks Rose

Thanks for the Strutt details.
The parents of John b1677 are new to me - many thanks.
I also have the same September 1749 date for the marriage of John b1712 and Eliza Holme. The Barlow Settlement Certificate has a John Smith of Monyash, Blacksmith, with wife (unnamed) & son William. 9 May 1752 - but not certain if same as John b1712.
You are correct about John b1768 marrying Ann and not Elizabeth Froggatt - my mistake.
I am descended from John b1768 and Ann through their son Matthew b1793. From Census records I can then trace the family leaving Edensor for Snenton, Notts before moving on to Sheffield by 1861. I moved from Sheffield in 1974 to Newton, Derbyshire but only when researching family history did I discover that there had been a lot of Strutts in the Newton/Blackwell area although I have not found a family connection with them. I remember coming across a biography of Jeddidiah Strutt whilst at school but I understand he was from South Normanton - not far from Newton nor where I live now and despite having at one time been nicknamed Lord Belper by colleagues I have not found any family link.
Thanks again - and if you do come across any further info I would be most grateful to recieve it.

Bernard..as an addendum to the saga below at 12.43...have now gone to the 1841 and 1851 Census.. By the way..John Strutt 1837 died 1838..leaving Levi as the only son.. There is no doubt that the Strutt's were well established Blacksmiths from at least 1760....
In 1841 thye family are at Pilsley..John is dead and his wife Martha is..a Blacksmith!!!..obviously continuing the family tradition.....her son Levi is working for her...1851 much the same except its Levi who is now a fully-fledged Blacksmith..but Mum's still the Boss!..........Levi died in 1858

Hello Bernard.the Struut family of Edensor appear to be just one large related tree.....with perhaps one or two exceptions.haven't worked it all out yet, but the main Thread that you want is as follows.....bear in mind that we are dealing with Baptisms here..not Births......and there are many reasons why children were often baptised months or even years after birth
JOHN STRUTT was baptised Edensor 20.05.1677..the son of Joseph and Anne. He married ELIZABETH STEVENSON at Chesterfield 21.09.1701.
They had the following children:- Joseph 25.01.1703 Francis 10.09.1705 Elizabeth 06.05.1708 JOHN 10.11.1713 Robert 15.05.1716 Dorothy 13.10.1718 Ralph 23.04.1721
I have the marriage of JOHN STRUTT to ELIZABETH HOLME 15.09.1749..not entirley happy that he was 37 when he married..and there is room for a possible missed generation..However..the children of this marriage were:-
Elizabeth 04.07.1754 JOHN 20.05.1759 Mary 14.08.1757 Elin 01.01.1763
JOHNSTRUTT married ANN (not Elizabeth) FROGGATT 01.01.1788 and had the following children:_
Elizabeth 25.12.1788 Mary 27.06.1790 Hannah 26.06.1791 Matthew 25.12.1793 Grace 28.06.1795 JOHN 02.07.1797 Ruth 10.08.1800
JOHN STUTT 1791 married MARTHA WHITE 19.07.1829 and their children were:
Catherine 19.07.1829 Levi 15.04.1831 Elizabeth 19.07.1833 Anne 05.05.1835 JOHN 03.12.1837....................
I can continue this if you like because now we're into the era of Census Records.
More later
Derek.

Thanks for prompt reply regarding families in the Chatsworth area in 1700's and the clear instructions how to use this part of GR.
I would be particularly interested in any more information on the family of John Strutt born around 1670 who was married to Elizabeth Stevenson and was in 1700 believed to be a tenant of the corn mill Chatsworth. They had a son John b1712 who married Eliza Holme at Edensor in 1749 who in turn had a son John b1768 who married Elizabeth Froggatt in 1788.

Hello Derek Thank you for all your brilliant research! I think when I sort it out I might begin to write "The Clews Saga" !! I am coming up to Quarndon next week to catch up with relatves so I can tell them all about the skeletons in their cupboards. I have another mystery, concerning my maternal grandparents (Abell) you might be able to help with but I need to sort out my facts first. Thanks again. Bye for now Anne
