Rose Report 13 Aug 2010 11:34

Hi Derek
Yes we have since found Edward from Edensor living and died in London. Sorry about that. We have found another that could be him with mother Esther MORTIN and an Isaac Barraclough living in New Mills in 1851.........we went back to 1841 and found Esther living on her own at 19 maybe pregnant with Edward. Is there any way we can confirm which Edward is ours then we can get his birth cert and confirm his parents names?? We found Edward married Janetta Nield is this the same as she could have shortened her name to Ann??
Thanks once again for your help
Rose

Derek Report 13 Aug 2010 08:11

Hello Rose.......EDWARD MORTON 1841 (born New MIlls!!!) married ANN NIELD (from Ireland) 1868...........I don't think he is the same Edward born 1842 Edensor..............

Since the name MORTIN occurs in Edensor Parish Records..until Isaac Morton's marriage..........and your MI is a MORTIN..(very unusual for stone to be carved with wrong name.....and since Isaac Mortin becomes issac Morton on Marriage....I'm suggesting that MORTIN is right..and maybe became Morton later...........

Either way.the Edward Morton married Ann at new Mills..was born Mew Mills.
..and there are plenty of MORTINS at New Mills

Hi Derek
Yes i think you are on the right track as we have found all of this info someone kindly sent me the children of Edward and Sarah and there is one more before Mary b.1788, which is John Mortin b.1875 christened 25th sept that year. We have found that the records have made mistakes often as we have MORTONS, MORTENS and MORTINS. i had a look at the inscriptions in Edensor cemetary and found
HERE
lieth the body of
THOMAS Son of
EDWARD and SARAH MORTIN
who departed this life
Novr 7th 1812 Aged 34 Years.
Alfo the aforesaid
SARAH MORTIN;
who died July 18th, 1814
Aged 58 Years.
Alfo the aforesaid
EDWARD MORTIN; who
departed this life March 14th,
1840 Aged 84 Years.
But there is no Thomas found in the baptisms and Edward is 20 years younger than Sarah!!!

Someone has been in touch with me about Edward Morton b.abt 1842, we know that he married an Ann in hayfield in 1868 and had children Isaac, George, Charles and James. Is there any way you can find out Ann's maiden name or will i have to purchase the marriage certificate? we have come up with PLANT and NIELD but don't know which is our Edward!
Sorry about this, i keep getting somewhere and then someone confuses me and i have to go back over everyone ha.
Thanks for all your help
Rose

Mark Report 3 Aug 2010 23:34

Hi Derek,

Any further infromation about the Marsh family of Scarcliff / Langwith come to lijght, especially Jonathan Marsh born c1735-1745?

I have been checking public member trees on ancestry and quite a number believe he originated in Ireland - whereas you believed he was from Clowne or Belper (my gut feeling is from Derbyshire).

Many have given him a date of death of 4th May 1781 in Bolsover.

Would you be able able yo investigate and comfirm or disapprove any of the above?

Cheers
Mark

Derek Report 3 Aug 2010 16:55

Hello again Rose........I have the Edensor Parish Records, and the marriage of Elias Morton to Fanny King 10.10.1842.and her burial 27.01.1880..he was buried 14.06.1884......
The two children you refer to are GEORGE HENRY died 1853 and HANNAH LOUISE died 1871..........I found a total of nine children.

Interestingly the edensore Records are full of MORTINS....including the baptisem of ELIAS MORTIN son of Edward and Sarah..03.10.1802....and FIVE other children including Benjamin who doed as an infant....so who were Edward and Sarah??????

This is where it gets confusing and leads back to the Hayfield Glossop and Chapel en le frith area........

The only marriage i can find is as follows Edward morton to Sarah Pott(s) of Taxal Cheshire....just over the border from hayfield etc....21.09.1779 (Edward is described as "from Chapel-en-le Frith."

I am aware of a wide gap between 1779 and 24.02.1788 when Mary son of Edwrd and sarah was baptised at Edensor........followed by Elizabeth 25.12.1791..Martha 03.08.1794..Benjamin 12.03.1797...Hannah 02.03.1800 and ELIAS 03.10.1802...these are all MORTINS..except that Elias is a MORTON on his marriage..and appears as a Morton on all successi9ve Censuses till his death..........14.06.188.

So is the same Edward and Sarah???and what were they doing between 1779 and 1788 that deferred the child-rearing for so long?????

Incidentally the burial of Sarah at Ednsor 20.07.1814 aged 58 i.e. born c.1756..could fit..

the burial of Edward 17.03.1840 aged 83 could also fit..with a bit of flexibility!!

I'll look for an Edward born Chapel c.1757....you see..they were both born at about the same time!!

More later

Derek.

Hi Derek,

It's been a few weeks since I last spoke to you. I think you had a lot information of the Marsh family of Langwith and Scarcliff that you were going to impart.

I have some success in tracing back the ancestor's of Sarah Gervais (Jarvis) to the Revells in 1700-1720 Langwith and Margaret Boler of Chesterfied born around 1694 - 1698 whos father was a Godfridi Boler.

Did you manage to confirm any further details of Jonathan Marsh ie you said he was from Clowne but then added later that he was from Belper born around 1735 but to be confirmed. Have you found any more details and do you thinks it possible to go further or is that dead end with the Marsh family
Regards
Mark

GenieAngel Report 23 Jul 2010 10:21

Hi Derek,
Thank you so much for looking. I had not seen the marriages that you mentioned. I do have the christenings for John, Sampson, Anne and Amos the details vary slightly I have Anne baptised at St Werbergh's. I have noticed that John with his 11 children in London varied where he baptised his children too conformist to non conformist.
Thank you so much for your continued assistance.
Much appreciated
Liz
