Hi Derek,

Thanks for your email the other day. At the moment I am trying to establish the date of death for Amelia or Amy Marsh (b1771) Bolsover Derbyshire.
She married William Marsh and lived in Scarcliffe, where her children were born and raised they seemed to stay in that Derbyshire / North Notts area.
Many people have put her death as 1863, but the only Ameiia Marsh dying seems to be Wells in Somerset and I can't see any connection to Somerset.
Do you have any records?
Cheers Mark

Janet O'Regan..Hello Janet i hope you have found me.

This has been a bit of a nightmare!! but one i have enjoyed...in the first place the Barton and Watton to which you refer is a combination of two neighbouring villages...and local knowledge is required.of which i have plenty. Barton under Needwood is in Staffordshire close to Burton on trent,
but even closer,a stone's throw across the river ,to Walton on Trent...where CLARISSA ELLEN FAULKNER was born in 1875 probably the daughter or Henry and Elizabeth Faulkner (not 100% 0n this)....

A researcher on Ancestry has put her at Walton on trent in Staffs..which is wrong!! Walton on Trent is in Derbyshire.

As you say she is working in the Workhouse school at the Derby union Workhouse on Uttoxeter Road in Derby..which became a hospital for the INsane and is now long gone.

I found the marriage to THOMAS PARKER in Derby third quarter of 1901....and hoped he came from Derby. Which he did!!

From where i went hunting on the 1911 Census..and Bingo!!

1911...at 3 Wellington Street Derby we find the following:

Thomas Parker Head.Agricultural Labourer born 1879 Derby..and his wife Clarissa born 1878 Walton on Trent..married 10 years.

and their children:

Fred 1902
Hilda 1904
Edna 1906
Rosa three months.

they probably had other children that you know about but i can go no further than 1911.

One last note..I have reason to believe that Clariss died in Ealing Middlesex 1964..does this ring any bells.

Hope i have been able` to help you.

Derek.

Thanks Derek, you have confirmed Maria's maiden name for me. I found both Alland and Halland names, but wasn't able to find which one was correct. The closed Ancestry tree may well be someone I am already in contact with who I am sharing information with. Thanks for carrying on with the research for me I'm really grateful.
Regards

Hi janet......I can't find her birth date either....but I have a marriage for Joseph Hardy and Maria Hallad.at St. peter's derby 03.10.1836

I see there is a tree on Ancestry that calls her mother maria Alland..and born in Turnditch..but the tree is closed..but it gives Twells as her married name.......

In 1851 there is Joseph and Maria Hardy of St. peters Derby..with children Ann 1840..Joseph 1842..Thomas 1849..and William 1851.

Turnditch is in that difficult area just outside Derby that is lose to so many other places like Belper and Duffield .

I'll keep on with this for a bit, and let you know.

Derek.

Couldn't find Maria as a Cooper post 1851 nor a matching death, but discovered she appears to marry a George Castle at Codnor & Loscoe on the exact same date as Fanny & Jacob.

I found George and Maria together in 1861 living at Codnor & Loscoe with a Jacob Whysall aged 9, born Codnor listed as visitor. Haven't been able to find anything else with regard to him post 1861 and wondering who he belongs to/what happened to him.

Derek Report 19 Oct 2010 21:57

Hello Joy..this is a strange one..i have Fanny Cooper on the 1841 and 1851 Census.daughter of Samuel and Maria at Eastwood..at which point she disappears. This is consistent with her marrying between the two censuses 1851 and 1861........which to my mind suggests dying in childbirth or soon after. there is no record of a child which again suggests the chld died too.........I have subsequent census records of Jacob Whysall remarried to a Margaret and having loads kids........I haven't gone further into that in case i am wrong......

Any thoughts?

Derek.

Hi Derek,
Any luck with this look up - Ann Hardy born c1840 according to the census returns and going by age on marriage certificate. Born in Turnditch, but I've been unable to find her birth record. Her parents I think are Joseph Hardy and Maria Alland.
Thanks in advance.

Hi Derek

I'm hoping you can solve this little mystery for me. I have Fanny Cooper (daughter of Samuel Cooper) born c1829, Eastwood, Notts marrying Jacob WHYSALL (son of Thomas Whysall) born c1826 in Codnor & Loscoe on 9th April 1855. However, I can't find any trace of Fanny post marriage and the closest death I can get is 1862. I'm would like to know if they had any children and what became of Fanny if possible. Ta m'duck.

Hello DET.....firstly your Pentrick/Pentagel is in fact PENTRICH near Alfreton/Ripley in Derbyshire.

JAMES LOMAS 1802 (birth and parents not yet confirmed) married MARY HILL (of Alfreton) at Alfreton 30.07.1829.

she was the daughter of FRANCES and JEMIMA HILL who married at Alfreton 29.10.1804.

There are SIX children I can find all born in Nottingham..you probably have these but here they are..none of which I can find births or baptisms for.....but then,as you say, my Records are Derbyshire ...mainly!

Mary Ann 1833/...Richard 1835/...Sarah 1838/...Jemima 1841/...Hannah 1843/....and William 1846....

hope this helps.

Hi Derek – can you help please?

I have a James Lomas (a joiner) bc 1802 Pentagel? or Pentrick? Derbyshire whose wife was Mary bc 1805 Alfreston Derbyshire.

Their earliest known child was Mary Ann Lomas bc 1833 St Mary’s Notts.
Although it is possibly they met in Nottingham, would you have anything relevant in your Derby records?

Thank you

Hi Derek,
Thanks so much for telling about the missing child. I have access to census records up to 1901 and have 10 children for William and Ann Twells - Sarah, Emily, Arthur, Albert, Florence, Walter, Maud, Ernest, Eveline and Ada. I do have the marriage certificate for William Twells and Ann Hardy which has them as being aged 24 and 20, where does the 24 years difference come in? Any birth or marriage records you have for the above children I would be very interested in.

Ann Hardy born c1840 according to the census returns and going by age on marriage certificate, was born in Turnditch, but I've been unable to find her birth record. Could I be cheeky and ask if you could have a look for me please? Her parents I think are Joseph Hardy and Maria Alland.

Thanks again for your help

Janet

Hi Derek, have looked at 1911 for these where it states there were 9 children 6 living and 3 dead.but I can only find 7.
Parents names are Francis T and Harriet Atherley/Atherlay, the children I have are George 1884,Daisy 1885/Frank 1889/Thomas1892/William T 1889/Mary 1900/Beatrice1902. The children are all born in Repton. Thanks
EDIT, It seems it might be Daisy living with James Coley and 3 children address is Barton under needwood, any info on this would be welcome please as it states married but I can't find a marriage under either name.

Derek Report 17 Oct 2010 17:17

Hello Janet..I haven't as yet found any firm baptismal records for your Twells....but I have a load of information........depending on how much you already know and what Census records you have.......let me know.

I can tell you that ARTHUR MORLEY TWELLS was one of several children of WIlliam and Anne..she appears to have been 24 years younger than he..lucky man!!!

Arthur baptised 27.08.1867 married ANNIE FOULDS who came from Woodhouse Eaves near Loughborough in leicestershire.....and by 1901 they were living in Osmaston Derby (in the registration district of Shardlow) at 7. Claremont terrace......with their son William harold..and you're right! there was another Twells baby.

I happen to have the Osmaston by Derby Parish records and there are two baptisms that will interest you......ARTHUR ERNEST TWELLS baptised 10.02.1901..and REGINALD FOULDS TWELLS born october 1898 baptised 12.02.1899..and the reason he is missing in 1901 is that sadly he was buried at Osmaston 16.04.1899 aged six months...

I also have access to the 1911 Census..and at 93 Rosehill Street Derby we find Arthur Morley Twells aged 44 Post Office Telegraphist and his wife of 16 years Annie and the two children William harold aged 15 (Junior Clerk) and Arthur Ernest aged 10 scholar

93 Rosewood Street still exists and is viewable on Google!

Let me know if you need all the other Twells!!

Derek.

Hi Derek,
What a trouper you are and a great find to everyone here. I hope you can help me. Here goes.....
William Harold Twells was born 7/7/1895 in Derby, the son of Arthur Morley Twells and Annie Foulds. Arthur was also born in Derby on 27/8/1867 . Could you see if there are any baptism records for William and Arthur Twells and also if possible any other children born to Arthur and Annie Twells. I have found one Arthur Ernest Twells born 1901 registered in Shardlow who is William's sibling, but none inbetween. The gap seems a bit long for that time lol.
Thanks so much for taking time doing this.
