hello Philip..I'm on to this for you..just an introductory point..you have the wrong George.....

GEORGE Fern 22.04.1808 Bonsall...son of THOMAS and Sarah..was buried at Bonsall 28.01 1809....

The son of Henry and Sarah (George) was actually baptised 11.09.1808..

There are two possible sets of parents for Henry who married Sarah Toplis (confirmed) 14.08.1791......based on being over 16 at age of marriage (1791)..

Henry FERN17.04.1768..son of Robert and Ann
Henry FERN 14.05.1772..son of John and Mary...

At this moment \i cannot distinguish between the two..but can confirm the baptism of Sarah Toplis at Wirksworth 1769....

more later..

Hi Derek,

I am struggling with the Fern family of Bonsall.

My 3x gt grandfather was George Fern who was born in Longwaybank 23/4/1808. George's siblings were: Sarah b. abt 1794 in Bonsall (bap 27/71794 in Bonsall); Henry b. 15/2/1799 in Bonsall (bap 7/4/1799 in Bonsall); Tamar b. 30/9/1801 in Longwaybank (bap. 8/11/1801 in Wirksworth); Joseph b. 1/6/1805 in Longwaybank (bap. 30/6/1805 in Wirksworth); James b. 9/9/1809 in Longwaybank (bap. 9/6/1810 in Wirksworth); Peter b. 19/9/1812 (bap. 15/11/1812 in Wirksworth)

Parents were Henry and Sarah. I believe that Sarah was Sarah Toplis and that they married 14/9/1791 in Bonsall.

I haven't a clue who Henry's parents were. I guess he was dead before the 1841 census so don't even know when he was born. In 1841, George was living in Chorlton on Medlock, Manchester with his family and with him was Sarah Ferns aged 73 not born in Lancashire. That puts her birth in abt. 1768 which fits in reasonably with the batism of Sarah Toplis 15/9/1769 in Wirksworth.

So, any info on Henry's parents would be marvellous. Also any info on his children, Henry, Tamar and Peter for whom I only have birth and baptisms.

George died 26/10/1877 in Manchester, sister, Sarah in St. Asaph 13/1/1876, Joseph Oct 1871 (I believe in Bonsall) and James 1/8/1882 in Oldham.

Cheers.

Phil Fern.

Hi Derek,

It's Ok, I just thought that you had an index of Church Records that you looked at. No need for you to look for it at Matlock as I'm going a few months and I'm sure you will have lots to look for anyway. Thank you anyway.

Baguley was Mildred's maiden name, she was born 1838 in Calverton Nottinghamshire daughter of William and Mildred Baguley and I have her on all the census.
It was her mother Mildred that you found on the census her maiden was Fletcher born 1815 Derbyshire.

Derek Report 21 Mar 2011 11:33

Hello Wendy.....I'll need to look at the Parish Records at Matlock for the marriage date.........I suspect Baguley is not Mildred's maiden name..the 1841 Census has her born 1815 at Shipley Derbys..1851 and 1861 more or less confirm the year of birth..which mean she was 48 ish when she married......and may explain why I cannot find her birth details.

Will get back to you.

Hi Derek,
I would be grateful if you could look up any Derbyshire records that could help me to trace William Parker born in about 1844 in Derbyshire. I am trying to find the names of his parents. He got married to Sarah Jane Hickling in 1874 and the only census that I can find him is in 1881. I believe that he died around 1890. I have checked the free BMD and it is possible that his birth was registered in Shardlow in 1844; the ref. is vol 19 page 560.
Thanks,
Carol

Hi Derek, told you I'd be back LOL. Does Matlock hold Repton burial records ? Just wondering if the folk from that village are all buried in St.Wystans churchyard or if there is another cemetery they would have used. Hoping to visit again this summer and do some more photos etc.
Thanks

Thank you for confirming those marriages Derek, the actual spelling on the abstract was Abel, the spelling (Abell) i gave you was from the IGI, sorry i should have given you both spellings.

Sorry to ask but could you please check the baptisms for Hannah and Alice Smedley again, you gave them the other way round last time.

That is.....

John 01.09.1782
Adam 06.08.1786 buried 14.05.1864 aged 73
Hannah 03.01.1790
Ann 06.01.1793.buried 23.01.1794
Alice 07.03.1795

I appreciate your help.

Hi Sylvia.......can comfirm the two marriages from Bonsall PR's:-

Hannah Smedley to John Abell 22.01.1810
Alice Smedley to William Gratton 12.11.1810

WILLIAM GRATTON..based on age could be one of three:-

son of Samuel and Sarah Gratton..12.04.1791
son of Samuel and Elizabeth 29.11.1795
son of Benjamim and Hannah 02.01.1785

Adam and Alice nee Heathcote married 08.11.1781

Alice Smedley baptised 03.01.1790
Hannah Smedley baptised 07.03.1795

Oddly Hannah Smedley daughter of George and Susannah was also baptised 07.03.1795

Adam Smedley was not baptised at Bonsall.

john ABELL was baptised 12.01.1783...if the spelling is correct. son of John and Dorothy...cos there are a lot of ABELS and ABELLS..some of them interchangeable due to misspelling...and of course loads of \smedleys.....

Derek.

Hello Karen.......the trouble is that he was not baptised at Buxton..and there are probably four James Mycocks born in the area between 1833 and 1840...........one of them at Taddington..not far from Buxton..and two at Bakewell..1833..1837........which can be confusing becasue Bakewel is a Registration Dustrict as well as a Parish the two Bakewell baptisms actually lived at Flagg in 1841...........so there is no way at the moment of knowing which James Mycock is yours....and there may be some interchange between Maycock and Mycock.....
I'll get back to you if I find anything further.

All the best.

Derek

Dizzy600 Report 14 Mar 2011 15:33

Hi Derek,
I am trying to find a baptism and family for a James Maycock born about 1836/37. On the 1871 census (RG10/Piece1153/folio11/Pg2) he gives his place of birth as Buxton, Derbyshire. He is serving with the 95th Foot. He is not with them on the 1881 census. He must have joined the Army in the 1850's as he was involved in the Indian Mutiney.

He married a Margaret Jane Ferguson on 23 Sept 1862 at Fermoy, County Cork, Ireland. He is aged 26 years. His father is listed as William Maycock, Bricklayer.

His daughter Clara Ellen b, 1868 in India on her marriage certificate in 1891 lists James as being deceased although I haven't been able to find an appropriate death for him.

Any help would be most gratefully recieved.

Hello Chrissie..I don't have the Records for Barlow..which is in the Parish of Staveley.......for which my records are partial.

I cannot find the Birth or the Marriage of Michael Key..though the Census says he was born c1802 at Barlow..his wife is Ann(a)...or Anne..she appears to be from Curbar..but without a maiden name I can't find her.

I do however have the Baptism dates for their children:_

Hannah 04.06.1826
Amelia 05.10.1828
Ann 16.01.1831
Isaac 16.06.1833
Sarah 26.08.1838

Hello again Derek,

If you have records for Barlow (and you have time) would you mind taking a look to see if you can find a marriage for a Michael Key to an Anne.

My Michael and Annes children were born between c1824-c1844, all baptised at Barlow.

Mary c1824
Hannah c1826
Amelia c1828
Ann c1831
Isaac c1833
Sarah c1838 (married a James Needham)
Michael c1840-1847
William c1844

Could you please also take a look to see if you can find Michaels baptism, also at Barlow. According to census records he was born c1801.

Thank you

Chrissie
