Hi Wendy........I think you might be struggling..because by 1841 John Stevenson was dead..so he will not appear on any census.........and the marriage entry will not necessarily show the father's occupation.. I have a baptism in loughborough 14.11.1815 for Sarah Stevenson daughter of John Stevenson and Esther nee Dexter.....but I'm not sure about this.....somehow it doesn't hang together.......both John and Sarah died n the 1830's.......and the marriage of Charles and Sarah..clearly states that both are aged 47..so she might have been baptised at the age of 2......The father of Charles Bell was peter Bell.... One thing you might consider is the age of Sarah Stevenson at marriage..47 ???? I might be tempted to suggest this was not her maiden name and not her first marriage??? Unless, of course you know better!! Next time i'm in Matlock I'll check the St Almund marriages........ Nice to here from you again. Derek. EDIT.. mm just checked the 1851 she WAS unmarried......aged 39.....so I'm wrong!!

Hi Derek,
Yes it's the daughter Sarah christened 1815 that I'm looking for she was christened with her sister Esther (who I cannot find anything on either),the christening dates are nothing to go by on this family as usually would as John and Sarah (Parents) did not have all the children christened as children at least 5 of their children were christened as adult's in the 1840's when they were in their 40's and 50's years of age and married after parents John and Sarah had died.
I do k now that the Sarah on the marriage is the one in Loughborough on 1841 and 1851 census as there is another person with her who is still with her on the 1861 census with Sarah and Charles. Also on the 1841 there is an Julia Stevenson don't know who she is, which throw doubts if it's he right Sarah for me.
Would appreciate it if you have a look at the marriage next time your at Matlock as I don't know when I'll be able to get there.
Have you seen a burial for Sarah Stevenson nee Dexter as I cannot find it anywhere in Loughborough also cannot find a christening for her.
Thank you for all your help :-D :-D
All the best
Wendy :-D :-D

Hi Derek,
It's me again! I'm beginning to have doubts abt that Sarah Stevenson marriage and the 1841 & 1851 census. like I said there was a Julia Stevenson with her on 1841 census so went to the library to look for her on find my past and found that Julia died 1850 and Sarah had a letter of Administration and it says they were sisters so looked for a birth for Julia abt 1821 and she came up as 1821 daughter of John and Ruth Stevenson in Leicester and Sarah came up as 1810 also daughter of John and Ruth so I think that is the one that married Charles Bell and is the one on the census. So back to the drawing board for my Sarah :-(
All the best
Wendy

Hi Derek, It's a few years since I contacted you regarding the Marsh family of Scarcliffe. Jonathan Marsh (1743 - 1781) was as far back as I go. Some have tagged Irish ancestors onto him but this has never rung true. I have just found on Find My Past a baptism record for Jonathan Marsh from 1743 in South Anston Yorkshire son of William Marsh (Jonathan's first child was William named after his father). His mother I believe is Bridget Broadhead who married William in 1736 in South Anston (Jonathan named a daughter Bridget - after his mother?). I just wondered what are your thoughts on this? Do you have any records for this parish? It is just over 18 miles away - more likely than Ireland

Hello Mark......I think your suggestion that Yorkshire is more likely than Ireland is very sound..particularly as Scarcliffe is so close to both Notts and Yorkshire. and a case can be made for MARSH being a long term local family.... Looking at the South Anston registers we have a marriage of WILLIAM MARSH and Bridget Broadhead in 1736........followed by a daughter Martha born 30.05.1737...John in 1738..Willam 07.06.1741 and Jonathan 08.10.1743..there is no reason to suppose that this is NOT your family, but it is more than possible that it is....the way to strengthen the possibilty is to see what we can find about the siblings of the Jonathan born 1743...............was it this man that married Sarah Jarvis (Gervois) at Langwith..............which we have discussed previously more later.

Hi Derek, Can you help me to fill in a gap that I have with a member of my family.
Hannah Copestake was born in 1796 in Boylestone to Sampson and Hannah. Samson died in 1818 under strange circumstances- there was an inquest that stated accidental death but I know no more. Hannah and the children were then sent to Derby under a removal order and I believe that Hannah (daughter) then had a daughter Mary who was christened at Derby cathedral in 1822. The birth stated that Hannah was in the Workhouse. Hannah and Mary then disappear but a Hannah Copestake then marries Jesse Shepherd in Ashbourne in 1830. In 1841 Mary is working in a village outside Rocester and Hannah and Jesse are living in Doveridge. Is it possible to find out what happened in between Boylestone and Ashbourne and was Mary at the marriage of Hannah and Jesse?
Many thanks Fiona

Great to see all the info on the Allens - wonderful work from Derek. I am the Great-Granddaughter of JOSEPH FORTH ALLEN, the Derby pork butcher, son of Thomas Allen (b1829) and Lucy Hough (b1831 or 2). Joseph's siblings were: Thomas, Francis William, Matilda, Henry, Lucy, John, Mary, Fanny, Francis, Margaret, Edward and George. So who is this ELIZA ALLEN mentioned in some of the thread??
My Grandfather was Joseph's son Thomas Edward, and my mother, his daughter.
Joseph married ANNIE WINFIELD. The story goes that she was a mill-owner's daughter, orphaned, met Joseph, and was disowned by her family. But I don't have any more information about her parentage.

Hi Derek, I haven't 'pestered' you for a while so I'll see if your 'magic' is still working! Do you still go to Derby records office? If so, would you mind looking to see if there is a will or any other information about John Kelsall who was the rector of Pinxton church from 1670-1686 when he died. I can't find where he came from prior to this. I have found children by his 2 wives & marriages for some of the children who survived. I am descended from his daughter Mary who married John Walton in Pinxton in 1687. He may be the one who signed the certificate for a marriage in 1656 at Tideswell & he may have been at Hathersage at sometime before Pinxton. He was introduced to the living by Francis Revel of Pinxton. Other than that-nothing. Sorry it's a bit vague-
Thanks Maureen

Hi Derek,
Happy New Year. Just been on here for the first time in ages-glad to see you are in good health & back in business1 Since I posted my request for info on John Kelsall, Rector of Pinxton, I have discovered quite a lot about his origins & family (born Etchells Cheshire & had a brother Roger-also a rector). I still would like to know if there is a record of his will at Derby records office -I know he left one. I can't find his first marriage to Mary ? She died after giving birth to twin daughters in 1684 & there is a memorial stone to her in Pinxton church-don't know if it gives her age or maiden name.. Any info would be gratefully received. Whoops! that should read 1674 not 1684! Maureen

Hi Derek,
Yes, I have Googled John Kelsall-there is a website dedicated to the Kelsall family (some of which is my research). But still I haven't found his first marriage to Mary or the births of his eldest children with Mary. I know from his brother Roger's will that John left a will but I can't find it. I know that he was also at Hathersage before Pinxton Just wondered if the records office may have something on him,
