i don't know if you can help. i am trying to find mary copestake born @1822 in derby/ derbyshire. i found 1 that may be her born in the workhouse and chrisened at what is now the cathedral. her mother was hannah copestake.

Do you have records for the norbury area of derbyshire to see if any were born in this area as she went on to marry samuel henshaw from rocester just over the border.

many thanks fiona

Derek

Derek Report 24 Apr 2014 22:22

Hello Fiona.............Mary Copestake was already in Rocester by 1841 when she was working as a Farm Servant....by 1851 she was married to Samuel Henshaw..and there is a complete Census record of her from 1851 onwards.................she appears to have been the illegitimate daughter of Hannah Copestake..baptised at All Saints Derby 24.03.1822..............Samuel Henshaw married Mary COPESICK (!!) in Uttoxeter Registration District JFM 1845.............purchasing the Marriage Certificate would confirm her parentage....and even if it only shows Hannah Copestake...and no father...at least you will know you have the right person..

I am very happy to look into this further if you so wish.

Hi Derek
Thanks for the information. I have the wedding cetificate -it just says father dead and no mention of mother.

I wondered if there were any other Mary's that would fit the bill perhaps living nearer to Rocester.

Hi Derek,

Thought you needed something to do. I'm looking for the death of Jane Ballington, born 1849 died in Derby, i'm guessing before the 1951 census, as she's not on it. Jane's parents are Joseph Ballington 1816 - 1901 and Ann Saxelby 1817 - ? Let me know if you need any more info.

Regards
Julie

Derek

Derek Report 13 May 2014 13:58

Hello Julie............Family Search.org have Jane Ballington baptised All Saints Derby
20.01.1849......daughter of Joseph and Ann.......BUT............Derby Registration District have a Civil registration of her BIRTH..and her DEATH 1st Quarter 1847.............from BMD records......

So either IGI should read 1847..or BMD's should read 1849..but since the BMD's give two separate registered events in 1847..I would tend to believe them over IGI......either way Jane Ballington died very soon after Birth....

The only way to be sure is to send for the Certs...........but since they will come from Derby RD..the date will almost certainly be 1847

I plan to go to Matlock perhaps this week.I'll look up the original PR's

Julie Report 14 May 2014 21:36

Hi Derek,

Thank you for the info. If you do go to Matlock could you see if there is an Entry for wedding of William Ballington 1778 - 1861, Derby, and Temperance Matson 1772 - 1861, Derby. There 1st child was round about 1802 that I know of, unless there was any more.

Julie

DEAR DERECK PLEASE ARE YOU ABLE TO TELL ME WHEN THE COAL MINES CEASED TO FUNCTION IN WEST BROMWICH, ECKINGTON AND DINNINTON..MY
FAMILY..BAILEY MOVED ON AS MANY DID, WITH MINE CLOSURES AND THE REOPENING OF NEW PITS,,,MY EARLIEST KNOWN FAMILY WAS AT DARLASTON
WITH AN UNDER AGE(it seems) marriage at St Lawrence Church on feb,9th 1823
someone found the marriage of Joseph Bayley to Charlotte WILKINSON..BUT I AM ABOUT TO FINISH SHORTLY AS I CAN NO LONGER CONCENTRATE,, ALSO ANOTHER QUERY THAT YOU MAY POSSIBLY BE ABLE TO HELP WITH..MY GRANDAD WILLIAM BAILEY 1885 BORN ECKINGTON WAS A MINER AT DINNINGTON YORKS,,DO YOU KNOW HOW I CAN TRACK DOWN ANY REPORT OF THEOPENING OF THE FIRST AID..BUILDING FOR DINNINGTON YORKSHIRE..WILLIAM BAILEY WAS THE MAN WHO RAN THIS PLACE FOR MANY YEARS, AND AS A CHILD I OFTEN VISITED HIM,,I KNOW DERBYSHIRE IS YOUR REMIT, BUT YOU MAY KNOW A MAN WHO DOES KNOW I AM NOW 80 AND LIVE IN CHELTENHAM . :-) :-) :-) :-)

Derek

Derek Report 19 May 2014 10:13

Hello Marian..not my strongest point..but DINNINGTON MAIN closed in 1992..ECKINGTON is still going, but only as a Drift Mine..and WEST BROMWICH had about 12 separate Mines............
.....I really suggest that you type any of these Mines into "Google Search"..and look at all the various Headings.............there is a wealth of Knowledge available..from which you may be able to take any specifics........

All the best

Derek.

Hi Derek

Still struggling with John Neal 1805...

If you get the chance could you check the Elvaston PRs for me to see if the 1808 burial for John Neal is an infant and if so are the parents are listed?

On a long road of sleuthing!

Cheers
Mark

Derek

Derek Report 21 May 2014 19:57

Hi Julie..have looked everywhere for this marriage.............since they were both from St Werbergh..and all their children were baptised at St Werbergh, you'd think that would be the place.but it isn't.......I'm at a loss at the moment!! sorry.

Tui Report 26 May 2014 00:54

Hello Derek - Reggie has referred me to your thread. I am researching the Stirland (Shirland/Sterland) family and Hanson families in the Eastwood/Heanor/Greasley areas. It appears that William Hanson b 1871, Whitwick Leicestershire first married Amy Frost in Duffield on 14.11.43. Amy is shown on the record as single but it appears that she had already been married. William's father is shown as John Smedly not Hanson which is another puzzle. On 16.8.1856 William married Sapphira Holmes and I can find them on the 1881 census where she is shown as Sophia. I thought I had found William again on the 1841 census but when I looked closely those details were incorrect. Very new to all this so any assistance would be much appreciated

Derek

Derek Report 26 May 2014 20:09

Hello Tui.I'm working on this..and very complicated it is!!..would help if you gave me the right birth date for William Hanson!! lol.......you may like to know that Amy's father on the marriage entry was one LEWIS WHITE!.I'm feverishly looking for a previous marriage that makes this possible.............particularly as Lewis appears tp have had five children but no Amy..and then married again in 1851 at the age of 65!......John Smedley also appears as a witness to William's marriage to Amy............and I don't know why...though I distrust that particular piece of information

Will get back to you later....

Derek.
