I am surprised and delighted that this thread is continuing despite the jibes about canny scots and aussie. Hey thats racist.
Never mind I will have ordered the 1916 marriage cert next week unless any one knows how to get the information immediately(and pay for it) on line so I dont have to wait for snail mail.
Its interesting news to me that Walters father may have travelled to Aus.and that Walts mother Ellen died in 1911. I doubt that would have brought him home at that time as travel time would have him back long after funeral arrangements had finished.
What is important is the two periods of enlistment in 1914 and the hospital info.
Tying these together shows first period of enlistment 13th aug 1914 to mid october then a gap of one month which was the same time frame as the hospitalisation period then renlistment on 10th nov. 1914. This fits nicely but even if the hospital period is at a different time because the enlistment dates still allow for him to have fathered Madge Jane Weeks in Aus before retuning to Fulham. Is there a regiment no. for the last enlistment?

Given the fact he enlisted in Aug 1914 and the boat journey back from Aus would have been a loooooong one, i do wonder if the wife had already moved on?

Stress of losing children etc, maybe she seperated from him having found herself pregnant by Mr Weeks and the Walter simply came home?

What can I say Lindsey? The Australians must watch their pennies more than the Scots! In 3 years, I could have picked up more than enough coppers discarded in the street to pay for the certificate!!!!!!!!

Yip! Here it is from one of the other threads.

The move of walter to Perth in Western Australia happened and thats why I am here today as the grandson of Walter and Sarah.
However he (Walt) must have returned to his roots in Fulham as the next chapter in his life is marriage to Annie Cox.
I can't find any divorce papers here in Australia and Sarah only remarried officially in 1940 to her long term defacto husband Thomas Weeks..

So it looks like she just lived with Mr Weeks as his common law wife until she heard that Walter had popped his clogs.

Lindsey* Report 25 Nov 2009 15:41

Yes they witnessed each others marriages too.

rootgatherer Report 25 Nov 2009 15:39

Or perhaps he left because she had found someone else! His wife married the Mr Weeks, did she not?

WayneTracey

WayneTracey Report 25 Nov 2009 15:36

As Walter's name is Walden and his wife died a Weeks??, and she's born a Weeks it does seem a little unlikely?

Unless he left because he had gotten someone else pregnant?

opon closer inspection there are 3 families living at the address, The Walden's, the Hyde's and the Philip's....

If that helps any?

To remind you of the 1911...

WALDEN, Walter Head Married 27 years M 45 1866 Wood Sawyer Parish Fulham
WALDEN, Ealain Wife Married F 45 1866 Parish Fulham
WALDEN, James Son M 14 1897 Parish Fulham
WALDEN, Alfred Son M 12 1899 Parish Fulham

So he may not be the father of Madge Jane Weeks born in 1914 then?

WayneTracey

WayneTracey Report 25 Nov 2009 15:31

It might be worth investigating the brother's marriages (we have George's), maybe he was witness to either?

Thankyou , I was about to look it up, saved me a trawl !

Lindsey* Report 25 Nov 2009 15:21

Now here's an interesting thing !

On both George and Walters marriage certs they have the address 17 Chelmsford Street

On Military records I find Walter

Name: Walter Walden
Estimated birth year: abt 1883
Age at Enlistment: 31
Residence: 17 Chelmsford St, Fulham SW
Document Year: 1914
Regimental Number: 30783
Number of Images: 8

Next of kin Alice Batton Friend.

He is in hospital for nearly a month being t reated for syphilis which could quite possibly account for 3 of his children dying young earlier

So now we know he was in England by 1914.
