That marriage (from the IGI) that Ellen has posted took place in 1855. From the IGI we know that the bride's parent's were Andrew patterson and Charlotte Scotland.
If it were me I would be looking at that marriage on Scotlandspeople to see what further, if any, information is there regarding Charlotte (Senior)'s marital status.

Freewheel
In Scotland a woman doesn't really lose her birth surname. When she remarries she can use her maiden surname but usually all her previous surnames would be recorded on the certificate i.e Jean Brown or Smith if Brown was the maiden surname and Smith her late husband's surname. By the same token on her marriage certificate, if her mather had been widowed and remarried it would say, for example Annie formerly Brown now Gray maiden surname Black etc.
In the same way a female death on the indexes on Scotlandspeople will list ALL her previous surnames and they will all be indexed provided that the informant gave all the correct details. So looking for a female death on Scotlandspeople you can search using any of her surnames and indeed can use more than one for cross reference.

I had a look and when I put the 1861 census in with name John Jess there is only a match for one and infant at the other side of the country. So I tried searching with the other names and nothing comes up either all very confusing. I cant find a marriage for John and Charlotte and no death for a Charlotte Jess either.

Name: Charlotte Jess Year of Registration: 1862 Quarter of Registration: Oct-Nov-Dec District: Shoreditch County: London, Middlesex Volume: 1c Page: 121 (click to see others on page) Can't find her in the 1871 Scottish Census .This came up which seems interesting as Scotlandspeople never came up with a death for a Charlotte Jess in Clackmannanshire

Hi Allan, I know this doesn't help find Charlotte's dob but thought I would just mention the following:
WILLIAM MCCULLOCH who was the informant of Charlotte's death in 1886, noted as her son-in-law, was the husband of Charlotte Scotland & Andrew Paterson's daughter, Margaret b. 1836 Clackmannan(sp) Just for info, Margaret Paterson & William McCulloch married 15/1/1855 Clackmannan (sp)
Regards Kath
