I am researching the Mellish family of Bermondsey/Deptford. My grandfather Richard Mellish was born Richard Morris on the 28 July 1880 to James Morris and Margaret Morris (nee Mulchinock). For some reason he changed his name to Mellish in the Boer war. There is also another link in that I have traced to what I believe is the family to the 1841 census and they had the surname Morris, yet in the 1851 census the same family had the surname Mellis (no h). I am confused and would like to know if there are others with the same problem. Richard Morris(Mellish) was the youngest of about 13 so there are plenty of us about! The same family also appears as Morris in the 1891 Census, Mellish in the 1881 Census but back as Morris in the 1871 Census. I am thoroughly confused by all this! |
