Albert Barnes Report 27 Nov 2009 11:09

Hi Janey
Thanks for reply
Would not say for certain That Elizabeth was Charlotte's Birth Mother as I can't at the moment find the second marriage far enough back, not that it matters at the moment.
Found Apr 1915
Marriages Barnes Thomas C-- Rees Crickhowell 11b 173
>Rees Beatrice -- Baines? Crickhowell 11b 173
Also regarding Father Thomas
Marriage Dec 1900
Barnes Thomas Crickhowell 11b 224
Might well be the marriage to Elizabeth not sure of her Surname I have Morgan in my head from previous Thread but can't manage to cross check it.
Will have a go at checking for Children for the 1915 marriage
Did not understand about the the Ancestry bit, I am not a member but I have the tree attached to someone elses Tree which allow me to edit it but not able to access Ancestry Records or Mail.

Subject: (1935-66); Daily returns of patients Stobhill Hospital

Dear Alistair

Its me again, a lot has happened since I last wrote to you, I think will the help of very kind people on Genes Reunited that we have found my Mother,

It is thought she was born in Nantyglo Wales 27 November 1918 Her mother was Charlotte Maud Wilson born Nantyglo Wales and her Father Daniel James Wilson Born Dromore Co Tyrone

Andrew Lived in Springburn Glasgow and joined the Army there in 1917 He married Charlotte.

Daniels Parents came to Glasgow from Ireland around 1900 as they are in the Census living at 79 Plantation St Govan they had other children born in Glasgow

Daniel must have moved to Glasgow after the war with his family, this did not work out and they got divorced as Charlotte got remarried 1932 to Edward Bale in Nantyglo in Wales.

Unfortunately all this is only circumspect without proof that this Sarah Elizabeth Wilson was the same one that gave birth to me it all points towards her but I need the last bit of proof that she is the one.

I understand that you also have in your KEEP daily returns of patients from Stobhill maybe even Births for 18th March 1944, which hopefully would give my mothers age and hopefully date of Birth.

This would make an old man rest and be happy.

I do hope you can be of some help as Sarah appears to have disappeared after giving birth to me I have traced her father till his death 18th April 1955 at 250 Shawbridge St Glasgow.
I have lots of other details about the family but none that can confirm all our hard work is correct.
Your help would be gratefully received.
Yours Sincerely

I then Contacted The Mitchell Library who suggested I forward the Email on to them which I did on the 7th Dec with the following
>
I spoke to someone on the telephone who suggested I forward this on to you

I was born in Springburn Glasgow 18th March 1944 was never adopted but was always under The Children’s Officers Glasgow

My Mother worked prior to my birth at Hawkhead Asylum and gave birth to me in Stobhill, I have never known her only know her name Sarah Elizabeth Barnes Wilson although the researchers who have been helping me feel her Name might be Sarah Elizabeth Wilson born 27 November 1918 as per details below.

This needs to be confirmed especially her birth date, we have lost all trace of her so cannot get any further, surely somewhere in your archive there must be details of me as I was moved around all over the place to different foster parents and Gryffe Home Bridge of Weir.

I have been trying with Glasgow Social Service for over four years but they don’t appear to have tried too much, I could be wrong but I don’t think they are bothered, or maybe they are too busy?.
I do hope you will be able to help.
If you need a copy of my birth certificate etc I can forward this at your request
Thanking you in anticipation
>
No Reply so Telephoned them today and they confirmed they had recieved my Email and it would take a couple of weeks to answer.
So maybe some news in the New Year.
A Very Merry Christmas & A Happy new Year To All

This looks like it Might I stress Might just be the break we are looking for
Looks like good news to me but only time will tell.
Details as Follows
Jock

Dear Mr Wilson,

Thank you for your enquiry of 07 December 2009. Please accept my apologies for the delay in responding to your enquiry and for any inconvenience that this may have caused. This is due to the large number of enquiries that are received which we are working our way through as quickly as possible.

I have now had an opportunity to search the archive indexes and records in relation to children placed in care. I have traced a number of relevant records but although these are housed in the archives, they fall under the ownership of Social Work Services and are also covered by the Data Protection Act (1998) and as such we are unable to provide access to these records here in the archive search room. Access to these records is managed by the Families for Children Section at Social Work Services. I have provided contact details for you below for the Families for Children section at Social Work Services where you should place your enquiry in writing. Families for Children will then request copies of the records from the archives and advise you as to how you can access the records. If you could ask Families for Children to mark the request for my attention as I will have all the copies ready to forward on to them and this should prevent any unnecessary delay.

Just A quick update
Big Thankyou to the lovely people who have been holding my hand through this 9 mth search, no names you know who you are.
Where are we now.
We now know that the Sarah Elizabeth Wilson from Wales is my Mother.
This has been confirmed by Social Services on the telephone
They will be supplying hopefully all the paperwork found in the Archives that they said they did not have but the lovely Elaine who is the Archivest there now is very clever and knows how to search it all, with all her good work up they poped
Apparently after my mother gave birth to me she lived in A Salvation Army Home,so despite having a large extended family on her fathers side in glasgow no help was forthcoming.
She obviously kept me until December 1944 when she had to ask for Poor Relief, which is nothing like the Benifit System of today,to recieve help you had to be destitute, This request then led to me being Boarded Out, I think that meant being taken into care or sent off to some Family who would get paid for looking after you.
I went to Mrs Cameron Hill Cottage Conon Bridge In Ross Shire I don't know what happened to my mother her last known whereabouts now were in 1953, 174 Cromwell Rd Earls Court London
A final little snippet my Father is named as P Fitzgerrald from American Forces, which is what I always imagined, Bar of Chocolate some Nylons some smooth talk,it all went to a girl's head, result here am I.
At least the past is a lot clearer, lets see what the New Year Brings,
Too all who helped and read this Have a Wonderful New Year.

Albert Barnes Report 10 Jan 2010 20:05

Hi All
Just a quick update, wrote to Salvation Army to see if they can trace my mother, they returned to me a form to fill in and a request for a cheque.
This has been sent so have to wait and see what transpires.
Alex Neil from glasgow social services has not delivered the goods yet, phoned him Friday but he was not at work, so will be waiting on Monday morning to chase him up.
Also recieved a Card\Letter from my Great Aunt Phyllis Barnes's Great Grand Daughter Raynor also enclosed a Photo of Great Aunt Phyllis at her mum & dads wedding. So now a picture of my mothers aunt, pretty damm good start to the New Year. The sad bit was that Raynor did not have much to do with the Barnes side of the family so not too much joy on that side.
That's about all for now.

Tell Mr Neil he'll be hearing from me if he doesn't get moving!

That should scare him straight. ;)

Albert Barnes Report 11 Jan 2010 20:19

Spoke to him today, said he sent it last Tuesday?, I said I hadn't got it yet, he said its not on my desk now?. Remembering this is the same man that kept telling me the record did not exist for the last 4 years,????.
He did say that if I did not get it he would send it again Recorded Delivery.
So I think I will give him till Thursday, and chase him again, might even have to threaten him with setting Janey loose on him.

I've emailed you some info about places you might try, for info about Fitzgerald. The one completely unintelligible thing on the page, and it's his first name (or rank, can't even tell).

The info was right there all along. But in the meantime, all the searching we have all done in your threads has been confirmed by this document, and it does confirm the info you used for finding family; hopefully you can find more.

Jock, googled the name and saw your genforum posting.

http://www.txgenweb6.org/txcolorado/cemeteries/alleytoncem.htm#F

Fitzgerald, Rex; born: Dec 14, 1906; died: Apr 13, 1956;
Son of Leon and Mary Fitzgerald, veteran of World War II

also

Fitzgerald, Ruth; born: Aug 25, 1909; died: Jan 28, 2004;
Daughter of Robert and Luvenia Bratcher, married Rex Fitzgerald

Fitzgerald, Edward; born: Feb 8, 1935; died: Dec 30, 1975;
Son of Rex and Ruth (Bratcher) Fitzgerald

Fitzgerald, Ulysess Yogie; born: Oct 22, 1940; died: Dec 22, 1998;
Son of Rex and Ruth (Bratcher) Fitzgerald

But this is the one your responder said was described in his enlistment record as "Negro", so he is beyond unlikely as a candidate.

The other person mentioned was a Rex J Fitgerald born 1928, for whom no WWI record was found - unsurprisingly, as he would have been 17 when the war ended. Sarah herself was born 1918.

Just wise to make sure that searches done elsewhere are known to anyone trying to help in this thread.

Thanks Janey
At the risk of repeating things I should explain the following about Sarah
She was Christened Sarah Elizabeth Wilson
She signs her Name Sarah Wilson
On my birth certificate she called herself Sarah Elizabeth Barnes Wilson
Hope that clears up any thoughts regarding different names being used.

Albert Barnes Report 17 Jan 2010 18:53

Received from Kathy
Hi Albert

I was reading your post on trying to find and thought I would have a look .

This may be a total red herring but I couldn't find a Rex being described as a negro on his enlistment papers .
I found a Roy R Fitzgerald with parents Leon and Mary .He was born 1906 in Texas .The census was so faint it was impossible to read .
He married Grace V Dale in 1925 in Texas .
He enlisted 1942 nabrasca and described himself as single .

Some one has a tree on ancestry which shows that he had a daughter Shirley Jean Fitzgerald born 1935 in Washington .

As I said this could be way out but I checked and he died 1985 in Spokane Washington and not the date given on that list of dead fitzgeralds ( can't remember the date now )

So could he have been Roy Rex ???

Sorry if you have already thought this one out and eliminated it .

Jock - ? different names? You lost me. I meant I googled "Rex Fitzgerald" (as explained in my email), if that's what the confusion was. I know Sarah's name(s) by heart, trust me!

I hope you do try the official sources I gave you links for -- the problem for US WWII records, for anybody reading along, being the same as in England for WWI records: a huge majority of them were destroyed in a fire in 1973, I think it was.
