Hi Kath & Rootgatherer,

I am signing off tonight now. It is all terribly exciting especially as the people we are searching were just ordinary people. How fortunate we are that the Scots were so good at recording such events even those days.

Will keep you posted.

Goodnight.

Good Morning Jean,
I do not sleep well so I while away the hours on research, just incase you were wondering why I appear to be an 'Addict' !!!!

William Stevenson's parents, Robert Stevenson & Hamilton Andrew had the following children: All born St.Ninians.
BUT all coming up with the mother's christian name of Hamilton(not Andrew) on Scotlandspeople.
JEAN CHRISTENED 8/2/1784
JANET CHRISTENED 18/3/1788
ARCHIBALD CHRISTENED 8/6/1790
ROBERT CHRISTENED 8/7/1792
JAMES CHRISTENED 12/1/1797 POSS DIED 1875 BANNOCKBURN
WILLIAM CHRISTENED 29/11/1801 DIED 1863 ST. NINIANS

I have confirmed Isabella Millers birth on SP (don't know if you have already done that) BUT it's coming up as ISABEL, not Isabella.
Parents, Nichol Miller & Janet Cowie who married 28/11/1802 St. Ninians.

Regards
Kath

Good Morning Jean and Kath

Isn't this turning out just fine! What a wonderful name Hamilton Andrew - superb. As you say Jean, we are lucky that in Scotland statutory certificates give us so much detail it makes getting back to the late 1700s a bit easier and with a little more certainty.

It is interesting the Cowie connection - my husband's Great Great Great Great Grandfather's second wife was a Cowie and he too was born in St. Ninians in Stirling!! Small world or what?

Good evening Kath & Rootgatherer,

I am very impressed with your research and am so happy to know the children of Hamilton & Robert. I wonder why they are coming up as Hamilton and not Andrew. Maybe the person recording thought that it is how it should be.

I did not have Isabella (Isabel's) birth details. I did have her parents names but only from her death cert. so thank you for that.

I have quite a bit of information to update my records now.

Rootgatherer, isn't that funny about the Cowie name - you never know there might be a definite connection there.

I have had another look at the 1841 census for Hamilton Stevenson and I think it is my Hamilton, living on her own and recorded as Independent under occupation. She is recorded as 79 so the dates would fit. Seems a bit strange living on her own then. More digging required there and not enough time in the day.

Must close this evening as my daughter, age 11, back from her Halloween Party.

Goodnight for now. (Kath try to get some sleep tonight!!)

Good Evening Jean,
It may well be your Hamilton Stevenson on the 1841 Census as I found a death on scotlandspeople tonight for a Hamilton Stevenson died 1853
but not in Stirling, it was in St. Cuthberts, Edinburgh.
If it is her, she would have been 95 years old!!! Maybe she eventually went to St.Cuthberts as her parents married there, she may have had some of her family there. What do you think?

By the way, it didn't come up with other surname being Andrews.

Regards
Kath

Hi.

Just noticed your post, and I am a Cowan and Miller researcher for the Stirling area (St Ninians). I think that the name of one of your ancestors is a little out - I have the details as follows:-

Nicol Miller b 23/3/1782 - m *Janet Cowie 28/11/1802

Cowie was also a name which crossed with prior generations of Miller.

Auchenbowie was the home of the Millers and the Cowies

Hope this helps, however, if you have something which says that Nicol's wife was a Cowan, then I would be very interested to hear from you.

Ray Cowan
Sydney, Australia

PS. Nicol's brother James married Ann Cowan and another brother, John, married Elizabeth Cowan (not directly related to Ann)
