Hi Martyn,
Quoting your post of 23rd October 13.39

Freewheel, thanks for the info on the Cameron's, didn't realise there were so many. I notice jane's middle name is McL, should i assume this ia an abbreviation of something else?
I also noticed that some of the childrens middle names begin with B or Y, I know David's middle name is Blair (mother's maiden name) & her mother was Young. Would this be a possibility?

This is the information I have found regarding Jane's middle name.

Jane McL Cameron born 1879c, daughter of William Cameron & Isabella Blair.

William Cameron b. 1852 St. Cuthberts Edinburgh, his father was John Cameron b. 1824 Midlothian. John 1st married Margaret McDonald in 1849 Logierait. Then married Rachel Campbell in 1851 Perth.
Then married Jane McLay (BUT NOT UNTIL 1902).
Rachel Campbell died in 1890, her last child was born in 1870 so it's my guess that Jane McLay was on the scene between 1870 & 1902.
So, perhaps Jane McL Cameron b. 1879 was Jane McLay Cameron.

Just a thought anyway.

I agree that the B in the other childrens names are most likely Blair but you really need to buy the birth certs to be sure..

Hi Ellen,
Georgina's mother, Elizabeth Algie died in 1888 Glasgow.
Georgina's father, George then remarried to a Mary McChesney in 1889 Glasgow.
Georgina was born in 1886, not 1866

I suggest looking at Scotlandspeople for births between marriage to Elizabeth and Georges death in Glasgow. As it is the main line. His death on Scotlandspeople should have details of his marriages. The only George McMillan c1826 ,carpet weaver,i am finding in the 1891 census is married to a Mary ,with a Georgina bc1887.1901 Census Georgina is a muslin weaver. Is that her occupation on the marriage certificate? Mother Mary ?No more issue .108 Reid St.Bridgeton.Need the death Certificate of George McMillan to see how many times he was married.

Ellen

It has been established on the thread that George was born in 1826 and died after 1891. He married Georgina's mother Elizabeth in 1881 and she was born in 1886.

Hi Georgina born 1876,father born c1866 ? he'd be 10 when Georgina was born.if he died in 1881 there are likely to be only Georgina ,and it would be Step siblings.Does it give the parents marriage details on the birth certificate? If not it will do if you go through "Scotlandspeople"

Well done Kath! So Mary wasn't her Aunt but her stepmother. I suppose it makes sense that George remarried quickly after Elizabeth's death. It would be difficult for a man in his 60s with a young child to bring up.

I think you are correct that George would have been married before he married Elizabeth and with a bit of luck Martyn will find the names of all his wives on his death certificate (if the informant knew them). So although it looks as though Georgina had no half siblings on her mother's side she may well have had on her father's side. They would probably have been grown up and married with children of their own before she was born.

Hi Martyn,
From Ancestry, Georgina's father, George McMillan was born in 1826 in Glasgow as he was 65 years old on 1891 Census. He was probably married even before he got married to Elizabeth Algie in 1881.

Here you are - Elizabeth's first marriage was in Glasgow but alas in 1874 so she won't appear with Joseph on any census as she married George in 1881.

I have use my last credit - so can't view the record.

1874 PARKINSON JOSEPH ALGIE ELIZABETH HIGH CHURCH GLASGOW/LANARK 644/02 0137 VIEW

and her marriage in Dennistoun to George

1881 MCMILLAN GEORGE ALGIE ELIZABETH DENNISTOUN GLASGOW/LANARK 644/03 0192

Ahh! That's better Martyn.

So it looks like Freewheel has found the right Georgina as that George is indeed a Carpet Weaver. (Just for interest - Greendale Street is near the famous Templeton's Carpet Factory).

Now if you got the parent's marriage from Georgina's birth certificate, if you look up their marriage it will give your their ages and also tell you if they were single or widowed (which it looks like Elizabeth was).

From the census that Freewheel has posted, it looks like Elizabeth died between Georgina's birth and 1891 - so that should make her death easy to find on Scotlandspeople.

It looks like George died between 1891 and 1901 - so again it shouldn't be too difficult to find his death.

The Mary McMillan who is listed as Georgina's mother is almost certainly her Aunt - either George's sister or widowed sister-in-law.

You caoul also look on Scotlandspeople for Elizabeth's first marriage and then it may be possible to find half sisters or brothers for her as it looks like she was the only living child of George and Elizabeth.

Martyn

Have you bought a copy of Georgina's birth certificate or did you get her date of birth from her death certificate?

Have you bought her parents marriage certificate?

Where are you getting her parents approximate year of birth from if she hasn't been found with them on a census record?

You are making it very difficult to help you.

You said
"Georgina's parents were George b 1866 Glasgow & died 22/04/1881, his wife was Elizabeth Algie born 1852 & died 22/04/1881 glasgow"

So did they both died on 22/04/1881 or is that they date that they married?

Also in your first post you said that Georgina was born in 1876 - so was she born before her parents married? What were the details from her birth certificate please? Including the address where she was born.

Freewheel, point taken about the age, I think George was born c1856 & Elizabeth Algie was born 1852. I know he married Elizabeth Algie 22/04/1881. Is it likely she remarried a Colqhoun by 1891?.
I got her information from Scotland's People
