Hi Jacki,
Russian surnames can usually be broken down to read "son of" or "daughter of" but these do not. Certainly there is a Hebrew/Jewish link in them and because of the various border changes and persecutions in the 1700's and 1800's I would look at the history of the area known as Galicia (not to be confused with Galicia in Spain):

In 1772, Galicia was the largest part of the area annexed by Austria in the First Partition of Poland. ...

Jewish families had settled in this area and initially moved from there in search of work.

good morning one and all.
im realy hoping that someone maybe able to check the records i have found above to see if they are related to family im desperatly tryin to find.. i have looked at a nationalisation paper from kew but unfortunatley it isnt the same person i am looking for . If you think you maybe able to help id be very greatfull.

OH MY..... i nearly deleated this thread as i felt to give up ever finding anything on this secret russian/polish family of mine.
PHEW!!

please can someone advise me where i can try and see if my grt granpa's parents can be found on any census.
Im just thinking that if they came to the uk at sometime they maybe on cens?
then maybe i can trace grt gran pa that way.
On grt granpa death cert which was in 1926 glasgow...(hv a copy)
it gives his parents names which have now confused me even more..
i am goin to suggest if they did come here before their son, it would be abt 1870's as frank (son) grt grnpa) was born russia/poland 1862ish..
or they may have come with him as a babe.?
oh Im sooooo confused as what to do.
The names are as follows.
John MINCYINSKAS and mother ANNIE CURVINSKUTIS
of course the spelling copuld be different. going by the cert does this mean they didnt change their names? Our grt grnpa once lived in northumberland and wigan.. with wife and klids. in the end after wife mary died he was in scotland.. iam now going to try the national archives online and see if anything comes up..
