I already have some info re Joseph, b c1855, but I am unable to track him down after the death of his wife, Elizabeth, nee Burfitt, 25/5/1886. Joseph (listed as Carman on Elizabeth's death cert) and Elizabeth had two children, Elizabeth, 1881, and my grandfather, Joseph, 1883. Both children were born in Islington, London. Elizabeth died of peritonitis in the Fever Hospital in Hackney.
My mother and her siblings were told that their grandmother had died in childbirth when having their father, something we have now disproved. They were also told that their grandfather had abandoned his two children on his mother in law's (their gr grandmother's) doorstep. Unfortunately, I not able to verify this one, but I do know that his mother in law, my gr gr grandmother, did have a hand in the upbringing of my grandfather, though I believe his sister was placed in a children's home. This, again, contradicts the story given to the family! As far as I know, he was never heard from again.
I suppose I would really like to know if Joseph senior married again and had more children. Plenty of Joseph Berrys around, so wondered if anyone recognised any of the details here.
Many thanks.
Sue
