thanks for your help. Had another play around on 1911 and downloaded it.
I found it fascinating to read. Hadn't realised there was so much info I could reach.

When you use the download the image box you only get the enumerators summary.

Eg the initial and surname of the head of house at each house.
What is useful is you get the whole page of families living in the street.
You may be lucky and can recognise family members


Checked my images and when I downloaded 1 showed the original page the rest were only enumerators summary

thanks FFF....I have printed it out but half of the page was black ink, which annoyed me...lol..hoped i could save it to my computer, crop it then print it out as I do with other census images. The main thing is I have it.

Thank you mgnv for all the info. I have just viewed the 1911 census image and it says Jane Simpson lost 4 children, but unfortunately no names were on there. Worth a try though.
Can anyone tell me how to save the image to my computer please ?

Burslem was in Wolstanton rego D.
Alice B1890q4, Dora 1900q2 and ChristineinPortugal's 1901 census were all Wolstanton rego D,
and we know Alice and the 1901 were for Burslem.

Now StaffsBMD haven't finished Burslem births (cover only 1837 - 1897), [they erroneously omit 1860-1888]
but I would concentrate on Burslem events - there's a lot of Simpson births there though:
1884-1897 lists 5, 9, 6, 1, 7, 4, 9, 6, 4, 2, 10, 3, 4, 6, i.e., with 35 after 1890 and StaffsBMD has no coverage of Burslem deaths..
However, the Wolstanton deaths are listed under Newcastle-u-L, and the Tunstall (excl 1890) are under Stoke-o-T, so one could figure them out by subtraction.

It just seems too big a task, so what's the alternatives.

If you knew their church, one could check the baptism and burial registers.

Although visiting Staffs rec off, and/or renting LDS films are options, perhaps the best thing to do would be to ask Stoke-o-T rego office to find the 5 boys born to William and Jane in Burslem.
Although they'ld have a range of dates to check, if you stuck to Burslem, it would only be in one register (or one series, really).

The other option is to locate their grave, as they're possibly buried together. Can't help here - you can google just as well as me.

I know I'm not the only one to have found additional info. There was a piece in a FH magazine last month about something very similar so I expect it happened quite a bit!

Thanks Mrs Grumpy for all your info. I I am definitely going to buy credits tomorrow for 1911 as I am so intrigued now. Have also sent an email to Staffordshire BMD asking if there is any way I could see any deaths on line for my greatgrandmothers children. I doubt it really, just clutching at straws, as we all do from time to time. I could just send for all the certs and hang the expense, but that would be frivolous, and an impending divorce...lol

The 1911 census should just show the number of children the couple had - plus the number of surviving children. It should also show how long the couple were married.

However, I think it's worth getting hold of the image - especially if you have a query or two about the couple.

One of mine shows 6 children to the couple - when there were only 5 from that marriage - plus a blatant lie about how long they'd been married - because they weren't!

Another one - a classic this one - shows all the children born to the marriage. About 12 in all. Including all the children who had died. The father had listed them and shown their ages at death. The enumerator had then deleted all the dead ones. Dad had even shown the married daughter so she appears on the 1911 twice as she also shows at home with her husband. Oh, and again, a lie about the marriage - added by the enumerator guesstimated at one year before the age of the first child! Enumerator ignored the fact that the first two children of the marriage had died so his guess was well out!

So, you might strike lucky. Having all the names was a great help for me on that branch.

Hi All, just a query really. I have been sent an image of the 1911 census from a rellie on the other side of my tree that we are researching together. So now I see what Quinsgran meant about the image, but looking at the small print they only say how many children they had and no names or dates. Is this correct? or has anyone seen an image where they state names and dates. Just wondered...will buy some credits anyway.I have never done this before. but will have a go.!

Getting late in the antipodes -google staffordshire bmd - there are a number of yonug Simpsons in the death indexes for the late 1880 and the 1890s
It will be good to acknowledge these children

At least now you know two parish names-St Paul and St John-try ther local records office and see if they can help you?

Only church buriel record I could find, remember in that alot are not transcribed - is a Minnie Simpson 9 Nov 1895 19 months St Margarets Hollinwood district Oldham Lancashire -not much help really as not a boy
I only looked five yeasr either side of 1896 though Give me a bit more time and I will try before nad after those dates

on lancashirebmd Frank Simpson, mother's maiden name Finney, born 1886 in Oldham (on freebmd March quarter). Freebmd has a death of Frank Simpson, age 0, in June quarter 1886 in Oldham.

Maggie - what Quinsgran means is that the full image of the 1911 census asks how many kids they've ever had.
