Carol Report 20 Jul 2009 08:30

MICHAEL CONWAY was born in Ireland, as was HELLEN (Ellen or Helen) MARTIN, but they married in Edinburgh in 1857.

On their marriage certificate it states that Michael's parents, Michael (b1815) and Sarah (cb1815) Conway (both born in Ireland) were deceased. Hellen's parents were Francis Martin (1805-1867) and Mary McGovern (b1810) were also born in Ireland.

Michael and Hellen had 5 children, all born in Edinburgh:

Sarah 1859
Francis 1861-1861
Thomas 1862
Mary Ann 1864
Michael 1866

I have record of them in the 1861, 1871 and 1881 Census, under CONWAY and CONNOWAY.

Mary had an illegitimate daughter, ROSE ANN CONWAY, in Dundee on 1 May 1886. Rose Connay (typo?) is shown as a boarder with the Milligan family in Edinburgh in the 1891 Census (aged 4) and her mother was still in Dundee. There is no mention of any of them from that date.

Rose was my grandmother. On the passenger list when she arrived in Australia in 1909 she was shown as ANNIE MILLIGAN, but on her marriage certificate, six months later, she is shown as ROSE ANNA CONNOWAY.

Can anyone advise me how to trace records in Ireland? And how do I trace where they all went after the 1881 Census for Ellen, Thomas and Michael Connoway and Mary Conway in the 1891 Census. The last mention of the Martin family was the 1861 Census.

Greatful for any suggestions!

Many thanks
Carol
