I was wondering if anyone has any idea about what happened to children from the Roxburgh, Kelso area in 1917 who had been given up by there birth mothers? I am at my wits end trying to piece together this jigsaw! My Grandmother was born a Turner in Morebattle Roxburgh and her mother registered her birth 3wks after she was born. However she ended up being "adopted" (not legally) by a family in Catrine, Ayrshire where her name was changed to Campbell. I have no idea what age she was taken in by the Campbells or how she ended up on the opposite side of the country from where she was born - also no clue as to where she was between times. I would be extremely grateful if anyone has any suggestions - would it have been an orphanage? Also any suggestions as to why a couple with five grown up children would want to adopt a young child when they were both in ill health? Possibly to look after them or maybe an unknown family connection? |
