UPDATED:

1. I can verifiy from the marriage certificate of Emma Lester & John Richmond that it is the correct marriage of 1853.

2. John Richmond is listed as a widower in 1853. Yes, evidence stacks up that he had previously married Sarah Lester in 1849 who died in 1852.

3. John Richmond appears to have died in 1853.

4. Nowhere is John referred to as "Ralph" (his father is Francis, as per marriage certificate Spirit Dealer).

5. Sarah Hammersley Richmond - not possible that John is her biological father.
Believe the following:
father's first name is indeed RALPH, but surname is not Richmond
fathers surname is indeed HAMMERSLEY.
Family folklore speaks of the illegitmacy and connection to the pottery family.

Prime suspect is Ralph Hammersley, Tunstall, Staffordshire b.1821? married in 1851.
Geographically well located to one another 1851-61. Akso, Sarah Richmond was listed as a lodger in 1861 at the Swan Public House near Uttoexter; was wondering who paid for it as Emma was a Housekeeper at the time.

Was wondering if households kept records of who they employed and where I could possibly source that information?

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Many thanks
Jane
