This would appear to be Thomas in 1841. Two things that match, the birth place is given as Islington (as is I think the 1901 census?), and James occ is given as attorney? And thomas was a solicitor? |

OK, john harris widower/shoemaker b 1810 married sarah east, widow aged 51 in new norfolk in 1861. Sarah then died of heart disease in 1865. No offpsring to them then, BUT. John died in 1893 and his death was reported by the supt of police. Death confirmed with shoemaker, john died of senile decay? None of the other marriages I checked had an occupation for john, so unable to verify that, and the two I was hoping for hav john as a convict (to mary groom in 1832), and bachelor to eliza mccreedy, also in 1832. So, no closer to finding out where john came from I'm afraid. I also couldn't find any births to john/eliza to match fathers occ, and the only ones to a possible mary, were a yeoman, corndealer and farmer. Drats!! Linda :) |

OK, back to the harris's. There are two marriages for a John Harris around 1830's and the most likely is to a mary groom in Hobart in 1832. This is the only one that appears to have produced offspring (although the records state mary unknown) so shall try and check those out next time I'm in town and if John is a shoemaker then I think we can take it that he's our man. Not that it'll give us any info as to his birthplace. But witnesses etc may help. I was lucky enough once to find a marriage that had taken place at the grooms parents home, and from that worked out that he was born in Yorkshire, fingers crossed. Linda :) |

Millicent was transported for larceny, along with (it looks like) her sister mary burt. So she''s single b 1817 and tried in Devon. John's record says single and then further along say's widower? |
