Yes and you will never guess. I have just discovered my grandmother married a seafaring man as well. I haven't started researching him as yet. Having enough trouble with this one.

Ah ha! He must have been a crew member. His documentation shows he undertook his efficiency test about a week after the Marathon reached Sydney. I wonder where the ship went after that voyage.

Hi Christine, Thank goodness for that. Having Florence in Australia would have opened a whole new can of worms.

I know nothing is impossible with family history but it is really interesting that this Florence who is not a Kimberley comes from the same part of the world that CE Carter did. And she married a Kimberley, who so far as I can see has no connection to my Kimberleys. I said that with fingers crossed behind my back.

And yes I have that entry for Mariann and also another one for CEC with an August arrival date in Australia.

I actually searched to see if they married in Brisbane. Stupid because I know that when their fourth child was born CEC's name was not on the birth certificate. I reeeaally need to search UK records to see if Charles married again or if Mariann was previously married before she left England. No, I know Mariann was not married that was one of the searches someone did for me.

I'm actually off to visit the place where these people lived in Oz. I leave Wedneday morning. I'm supposed to be going for a family event in Sydney but I've managed to factor in an extra day to spend just south of there. The little town has a historical society and I've arranged to meet with the librarian and to have a look at church and school records. Can't wait.

I thought that as well. 7 July to 21 Aug 1909 is a six weeks and four days. Looks like Janey was correct (oh yes again) when she suggested they were on board the same ship to Australia.

Now I wonder whether they met befor MIEK decided to travel to Australia, and if not why she decided to go to Australia.

Need to connect her to the same area that Charles was in prior to 1909. Falls about on the floor laughing!!

I believe it took about six weeks england to Australia.

Tell me that this means that CEC and MIEK travelled on the same ship at the same time between London and Australia. Travelled via Brisbane. And that Marathon was one of the ships on which CEC served as a crew member during his time in the merchant navy (either that or just as a crew member).

And no I can't find any evidence that they married on board the ship. Oh yes I did look.

MARATHON / ORUBA 1903
This was the Aberdeen Line ship MARATHON. Built by Alexander Stephen & Sons, Glasgow in 1903, she was a 6,793 gross ton ship, length 138,43m x beam 16,79m (454.2ft x 55.1ft), clipper stem, one funnel, two masts, twin screw and a speed of 14 knots. The MARATHON and her sister ship MILTIADES were the last two ships of any size to be built with a clipper stem and figurehead. Launched on 18th November 1903, she made her maiden voyage from London for Cape Town, Melbourne and Sydney on 27th January 1904. In 1912 was lengthened to 153,57m (504.1ft), and given a second (dummy) funnel, 7,848 gross tons and accommodation for 90-1st and 150-3rd class passengers. In 1915 she became a troop transport and started her only post war commercial sailing on 21st October 1920 when she left London for Cape Town, Sydney and Brisbane. In 1921 she was sold to Pacific Steam Navigation Co, renamed ORUBA and commenced her first Liverpool to Rio de Janeiro, Montevideo, Valparaiso, Panama Canal and Liverpool voyage on 26th May 1921. She started her second and last voyage on this service on 6th October 1921 and was then laid up at Liverpool. In 1924 she was laid up at Dartmouth and was scrapped in Germany the same year. Anyway putting JE Carter and MIE Kimberley into their little plastic sleeves and into the folder in preparation for the trip elsewhere.

Started looking at the voyages. Also tried to find how long it took to travel from England to Australia in 1909.

So what have I found.

CEC departed London, via Melbourne for Sydney NSW arrived 21 Aug 1909 – Vessel Marathon.

CEC departed Brisbane via Newcastle NSW for Sydney NSW arriving Sydney on 7 Sep 1909 – vessel Marathon.

Miss MI Kimberley left London for Sydney Australia on 7 July 1909 – vessel Marathon.

Mary Kimberley (aged 25) arrived in Melbourne Aust Aug 1909 – vessel Marathon. (Edit. Not Melbourne arrived in Brisbane Aug 1909)

Florence Kimberley arrived in Sydney NSW from London on 1 Dec 1912 – vessel Marathon.

That’s it for documentation. Now to start philosophising!

All voyages are on board the Marathon.

CEC left London, via Melbourne arrived Sydney 21 Aug 1909.
When did he leave London. (Edit: Did he go via Melbourne or Brisbane?)

MIEK left London for Sydney on 7 Jul 1909. When did she arrive in Sydney.

Mary Kimberley is on Victorian Passenger Lists to Victoria fiche record (does not have to have disembarked there) in August 1909. Edit: Destination port is Brisbane

Once the Marathon arrived in Sydney Aug 1909 it then went to Brisbane via Newcastle and return. (Edit: No the ship went London via Brisbane to Sydney.)

On it’s return to Sydney on 10 Sep 1909 CEC did his boat hand efficiency test.

Why on earth did Florence come to Australia. Now I need to look for her in Australian records.

So. Marathon made one voyage to Australia between July and November 1909. Which means the voyage that left London on 7 Jul 09 must have arrived in Aust Aug 1909.

It travelled via Brisbane not Melbourne.

The Victorian entry for passenger lists has a small B in the Port column. Must be entry for all Australia.

My theory about arriving in Sydney and then going to Brisbane is not correct. The ship came via Brisbane then Newcastle NSW then Sydney.

Please tell me this means that……….

Well I get confused and I was born here.

I see I cleverly put Ada Catherine's death twice instead of birth+death, but you knew what I meant. ;)
