Scottish official marriage certificates started in 1855 .... these would have registered ages. |

no luck with 1841 census, only 1 result ( after expanding ages to 40 in the hope that her mother was also called helen and I could catch them both) and that was for a 3year old-not quite ready for marriage in 1845 age 7!! |

Strangely I was at the mitchell yesterday checking the poor law records.Had no luck with Wm or Helen.I'll try again using some dif. spellings etc.when I go to collect copies of some other people's records I ordered. Will give your wild card idea a go too for Helen's death record etc.I only have census up to 61. haven't been able to find any others yet but will try your idea of using the brothers. Will let you know how I get on.Thanks for your help.I really appreciate it.Regards Margaret |

thanks Helen the 1881 census result you found looks very interesting. It looks a very possible match. The mrs Daly could be helen lochrie.Ellen could be her daughter and alex, could be her husband alex.Mair. Wm age 8 fits with info I have on their family(from 1891 census) .Theother names I have were all born after 1881. These include anAlex.(MyG grandfather) b.1888 and an ellen/helen b.abt.1887.So if this is the right family i would assume that the Alex. and Ellen mentioned in the census died young.I have no info about Agnes.I feel I have seen the name Mc neil somewhere so will have to search through my "jigsaw" box!! Thanks again, your help is much appreciated.Regards Margaret |

Brilliant Rootgatherer-I had quite a lot of the info you have given me but you have filled quite a few gaps for me.I really appreciate your help. The spellings of names can be a nightmare.I have found some of my Mairs under Muir but this is a first for Mayor.I've been plugging away at Helenstill but not getting very far.Ifound aHelen Lochore in 1841 census age 15 living in parliament Rd with James Neilson 65,margaret Neilson 60 ,John lochore 11 Lean Lochore 9 and David Paterson 70. It looks a bit like children living with grandparents .don't really think it's my Helen but it's an interesting way of spelling Lochrie! Thanks again, you and Helen have been great. will keep you posted.margaret |

Just wondering if you might have any McCann's in your extended research. This might be Ellen Daly visiting overnight. |

Rootgatherer Unfortunately I haven't been able to find Helen Mair's death cert. I got the info from a poor law record for her son Alexander and also on copies of case notes and post mortem from Woodilee where she died.Nothing mentioned in either about her parents. I got their names from her marriage cert.. |
