I also doubted the birth certificate of George Herbert. I was convinced that Kay had got the wrong one! Of course the chances of two George Herbert Hirsts being born on the same day in the same place were pretty remote. Nevertheless I did doubt it. Such a relief to have solved that one! I can now look forward to the imminent birth of my first grandchild, due last Friday! I have been so engrossed in this that I haven't given it my due attention! It won't make any difference anyway. It will turn up when it;s ready. Do you think we will cause our descendents so much trouble a few hundred years down the line?! |

I have some new info. Kirklees Registry Office have no record of a Mary Elizabeth Hirst born at the time that the one at the Brown Cow Inn (census 1871) would have been born. I think she was Mary Elizabeth Woolhouse and that George was the illegitimate child of a Hirst male. Not necessarily the boys listed in the census. That would explain why he was said to be brought up with his grandparents. Mary E Woolhouse only married in 1879 and it was probably then that he moved out of the Brown Cow. So all I need to know now is WHO WAS HIS FATHER!!!!!!! It is strange that at the time of her marriage there was a marriage between Charles Hirst and Jane Hirst. I wonder if they had anything to do with it? Supposition, which should never be done! I just thought that all who are interested would like to know! |

He is related to my cousin, who is the same age as my children. I have been helping her do her tree for her dad. We have managed to find out an awful lot but this George Herbert Hirst saga has proved challenging! |

I have emailed Mirfield Cricket Club as I saw that the author of the book was secretary there. They might be kind enough to come back with some information, or at least get the family of George Herbert to contact me. Fingers crossed! |
