My cousin says that the birth was registered by Mary Woolhouse so no help there! On another site, it was said that there was a George E Hirst with his parents John and Mary Berry. Also that there was a marriage for a Joh Berry to either Jane Hirst or Mary Woolhouse! This gets worse!

Help!!!!!! I have looked at the 1891 census and there is a George H Hirst wiith his parents John and Mary E Berry and Berry siblings. I looked in the 1881 census and he is listed as George E Hirst. This could be why we couldn't find him in any census records! If anyone is still out there I'd appreciate some input!

My cousin emailed to say that in the book it names his grand daughter and great grand daughters as Lindsay Watkins and Sally Bean, both in Scarborough. How would I find them? No records of them on this site.

I'm still with you as well Diane.
Found this Foreword by grandaughter Lindsay Watkins in 2006
Lindsay Watkins, granddaughter of George Herbert,
"Foreword Providence must have been wearing a smile as wide as that of George Herbert Hirst when I discovered, quite by accident and from a distance of 300 miles, that Patrick Neal was writing this book about my grandfather. The following weeks were exciting for both of us as we pooled our knowledge of his life and career. Patrick has researched his subject meticulously, and his readers will find his enjoyment infectious. The very well-written (and occasionally quite comical) contemporary press reports of George Herbert's matches which he has found are greatly superior to what appears on today's sports pages. Particularly vivid is the Dewsbury Reporter's use of the word ‘trundler’ to describe a bowler! But all of these reporters interact with their readers in a way which is no longer seen in these days of television. We are thus the beneficiaries of their descriptions. Patrick also provides a complete record of Mirfield's 1891 season and places the reports in their context, while also bringing out the many facets of George Herbert's life and personality. His book deserves to be read both as a fascinating record of the Mirfield season of 1891 and as an appreciation of the life of the greatest all-rounder of the Golden Age. George Herbert Hirst was revered and loved within his family just as he was on the field. So I am very, very proud to have had the privilege of contributing to this book. May Mirfield Cricket Club have a most successful future, and many other gifted young players make it the start of their career. Lindsay Watkins February 2006"
Wonder where she lives if its 300 miles away. I wonder if she is likely to read this?

Hi Diane
Is it worth writing a letter to Lindsay Watkins and asking if the Pulishers of the book would pass it on to her if they know her address? I'm sure they wouldn't pass her address on if they knew it but they might be helpful enough to forward the letter.
If they don't know her address perhaps they might pass it on to the author who may be kind enough to forward it for you.

I have emailed Mirfield Cricket Club as I saw that the author of the book was secretary there. They might be kind enough to come back with some information, or at least get the family of George Herbert to contact me. Fingers crossed!

If you Google Lindsay Watkins, there is this, refuting that her grandfather swore -
" Sorry, but my grandfather would never swear
Sir - My attention has been brought to M Aldred's letter (Nov 2) about my grandfather, George Hirst, and Fred Trueman's "borrowing" of his famous comment on achieving the Double Double in 1906. In fact my grandfather said "very tired" not "bloody tired". He never swore, and did not allow his children to swear either.
Lindsay Watkins Argyll and Bute "
Think that was in 2007

I have been trawling through google info today and this came up.
someone called Fern Blackman in 2005 was asking for people connected to george herbert to get intouch with her,she has a amelia hirst born in nottinghamshire in 1880 who insisted she was 1st cousin to george herbert her email at the time was [email protected]. I don't think it is a problem incuding her e.mail as she had it on a thread on here in 2005.She is on Genesreunited.
Also on another site there was a reply to someone thanking them for putting them right with Mary e marrying john Berry and that Mary e was the mother of George herbert and that she probably had been married before. tha writer of that message was a Alan hirst from London e.mail was
[email protected] his message was in 2002. There is also someone on genes by the name of Richard Capewell who has Mary hirst and parents and siblings.
Did George Herbert marry Emma kilner? A George henry woolhouse married a Annie Kilner in Huddersfield 1895,don't know if there is any connection though.
Regards Maryb.
