There are not likely to be many of the same name (ie Barton) so the birth certificate will certainly help

Or do you have the marriage certificate for your grandfather as his father would be on there also

thanks very much for this. I have ordered TW lacy birth certificate and the death certifcate for Barton. I can't find any trace of the family in the 1891 or 1881 census but there are recordsfor 1871. Is it usual to have these gaps?

Hi Penny,

I'm afraid it is sometimes due to the fact that members of the household did not read nor write and it was left to guesswork by the person taking details for census as to how they thought the names were spelled. It is a matter of trying all spelling variations

I wondered if you could help me with an ancestor of mine, His name is Henry Stone he was born in 1849 @ Weston on trent (registration district Shardlow)

I have him on the 1881 Census with his wife Elizabeth ann Stone (nee Brown) and their 7 children, one of which was my great grandfather Samuel.

Is it possible to find him on earlier census's????? He was living at Stanley/ Stanley Common in 1881 which is where my great grandfather was born. Also would it be possible to find him on later census's with his family???
