Victoria Report 19 Apr 2009 12:15

Can anyone help? I am trying to trace my gg grandfather. I only have his children and their mother's names to go by. It appears that they carried their mothers surname even though she is in the census as widowed.

In 1871 census, Alice King b1844, Sligo, Ireland. Lives in Lancashire.

Back to Alice, She had a son William King b1877 (my g grandad) and a daughter Letitia Mary b1880 According to the 1901 census they were both born in Manchester, Lancashire She is down as widowed in 1901 census. I believe she had her children out of wedlock and said widowed so as not to be frowned upon - I suppose she could have married a King! I found a marriage in Abingdon, James King and Alice King!

My grandma always said that neither William or Letitia knew their father and Alice had promised to tell them, only she took it to her grave. William said they travelled around alot until Letitia talked her into settling down.
!901 census Letitia lives and works with Mary Ann Drake in Boothtown, Halifax and Alice and William live together in the same area.

I have seen Alice's death cert which Letitia is informant and she gave James (Brass moulder of Halifax) as the deceased husband. Letitia also gives James on her own marriage cert as father.
William however gave George as his father on his own marriage cert.
Does anyone know of any ways that I can try to find their father? Or even better does this ring any bells?

I have a hit a brick wall with this and would love to know who this mystery man is. Any info, no matter how small would be gratefully appreciated.

Many Thanks,

Vicky.
