That would fit with what rootgatherer said. The children being born before the marriage they would likely be registered under mothers name.

Yes - that does sound right. So I think that you are looking for births for a Henry Stewart and a Duncan Stewart.

I have Duncan's death certificate which shows his name as Duncan Moore formely Stewart does this sound right to you ?

If the 1861 census is your Henry, then his birth may have been registered as Henry Stewart if the father was unbla to sign the birth certificate. If an illegimate child is registered only by the mother, then the child will have the mother's surname. There is no reason that the child can't be known by a different name to that registered. If this is your Henry, registered as Stewart then there will be a corrected entry made when the parents married.

Worth checking for a birth for Duncan just as Duncan Stewart too.

Catherine, I do have the 1881 census for them. Henry senior states he was a batchelor, his usual residence was the steamship Kinsale of glasgow.on his marraige cert.

Looking at the ages of the children, I wonder if Henry Junior could be the son of a first marriage for Henry Senior.

On the marriage certificate you have was Henry a widower or bachelor when he married Margaret - although I have a couple of examples in my own family where the widower stated that he was a bachelor even although they had children from a previous marriage.

17 doesn't seem too young to me, even now a days!
