Sorry still no luck with the Mcgregor girls, met a few dead ends on Scotlands People, looked on the 1871 census only Janet i thought might fit aged 15 working as a domestic servant , but Elizabeth not with her.

Will try something new tomorrow, although what i don't know.

Two possible births for John Oliphant but this one is Dalmeny:-

this is the other one for the record:-

Five possible for Margaret Bartholomew.

Catherine Report 24 Mar 2009 16:58

2. ANNE OLIPHANT - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Female Christening: 05 MAR 1786 Dollar, Clackmannan, Scotland

Catherine

Brilliant, so it is definitely her then even the address fits!

Well done rootgatherer looks like you've found another generation!
But did you notice that Helen Margaret and Elizabeth are noted twice?

Ann might not be here but could this be her siblings? At least one of them is born in Dollar.

rootgatherer Report 24 Mar 2009 12:58

Remember Granny Michell was Ann on one census and Margaret on another - may be best to search with the 2 surnames and approx. year of birth.

Catherine

Catherine Report 24 Mar 2009 11:22

Had a quick look for death for Ann Mitchell and narrowed it down to:-

Name: Mitchell
Forename: Ann
Other Surnames: Oliphant
Year: 1861
Birth year: 1785
County: Lanark
District: ?

Have just heard of a connection with my tree so have some work to do today to up date that branch of the family. Name is Mitchell but nothing to do with your Mitchells mine originated in Hull, Yorkshire. Will check in later.

Hi Rootgatherer, No I haven't looked for a death for granny Mitchell but I will take a look on S.P, I did find a death for Duncan Jnr.but I can't find me bloomin notes at the moment but i know he is the right one.and no haven't searched for the 2 McGregor girls but they are next on the list.
Sorry Rootgatherer saw your post after i had done mine.

Unfortunatley have to go out shopping soon , my daughter says I need some fresh air, which means she wants me to buy her lunch so will be back on the trail of the mcgregor girls later.

Catherine, I am so sorry of course the births you found for Henry and Duncan were the correct ones , see what this is doing to me !!!!!!Having lots of senior moments. I think Rootgatherer may be going to The Mitchell and hopefully will find something, certainley if I lived in Scotland I would have been myself.
Thank you so much Catherine and Rootgatherer for all your help and advice I don't think I would have got this far. Of course if anything else comes to light I will post it on here.

Rootgatherer, Thank you for the offer of going to the Mitchell, but only if you have the time I am most grateful to you both.

Best wishes
Jean

Hi Girls

I'm getting confused now - did any of you get a death for Granny Mitchell who was looking after her Granchildren and the McGregor kids? If there is a death date and place it may be worth checking for her on the poor records too.

Catherine

Catherine Report 23 Mar 2009 22:45

Jean,
I haven't had any more luck with the girls birth either nor the marriage
but weren't the births I found for Duncan Stewart and Henry Moore Stewart (on page 2) the correct ones?

Wonder if the girls married? Their marriage records could give some extra info?
Hopefully the Poor House or the Cemetery line will give you some new leads.
If you do find anything I do hope you will put the info on the thread so we can see what you have found.

Jean

Jean Report 23 Mar 2009 22:14

Perhaps we should start looking for your Sturrocks instead of my Stewart's and Moore's.

Think I am going to have to give up on the search for the marraige of Alexander and births for Margaret and Ann, beem on Scotlandspeople and igi all evening but no luck.Think i might start looking for my original request of trying to find births for Henry and Duncan, although it seems to me none of these children's births were registered. ( thats not a hint ).
Tell me about the addiction part, haven't been away from this computor since Sept. last year when I retired and started my family search, still very new to this.

rootgatherer Report 23 Mar 2009 20:42

Gosh Agnes Sturrock - what a small world - that's probably one of my husnbands ancestors!! I have Sturrocks from Forfarshire/ Angus coming out my ears particularly Davids and Agnes's !!!

Anyway France appeals - cheap booze and fags! And as for retirement - well what can I say except that if it wasn't for work I would have been up at the Mitchell for it opening at 9.30 this morning. I'm trying not to pin my hopes on the Poor Relief. I am bursting with curiosity to get up there! I have to go out Wednesday evening but if I can catch up with my chores then I think I've got to go Saturday! Surely with all these children and widows they must have claimed. I think Agnes, who died in the City Poorhouse is our best hope. With a bit of luck if she actually married Alexander it may tell us where and when. It may also tell us when he died and when her father died.

I read a couple of articles last week describing folk like us as geneaholics but it is actually worse - you can even get addicted to other folks ancestor hunts.

Jean

Jean Report 23 Mar 2009 18:01

Sorry no luck with the marraige for alexander and agnes, doesn't say parents names and agnes's surname is different, Where should we go now do you both think?

jean.

Catherine, lucky you i love France, go there most years for my holiday, usually to Antibes it's beautiful. Not this year though as i have just retired poor old me !!!!

Catherine

Catherine Report 23 Mar 2009 17:48

Oh dash, that's my three possibilities up the spout then.
1839 Agnes Moir
1840 Agnes Fisher
1841Agnes Sturrock
That seems to confirm even more that Agnes and Alexander didn't marry. Maybe they just lived together then?

Jean

Jean Report 23 Mar 2009 17:37

Rootgatherer, please dont say that , We will not be looking for any more McGregor children !!!!!!

Catherine, the other Agnes's i found were
Agnes Gardner married 1838 Barony
Agnes Moir married 1839 Gorbals
Agnes Sturrock married 1841 St.Vigeans. I don't think this one is our Agnes. Going back to Scotlands People to look at OPR marraiges and try and figure out which one to spend my 5 credits on. wish me luck. jean
