Haha indeed.

I myself am descended from the illegitimate offspring of the black sheep youngest son of a Viscount, I'll have you know!

Or so my great-grandfather had everybody know, anyhow. ;)

European royalty, well, they're a dime a dozen, you know.

And I think the closest you get in any case, at least so far, is having some distant ancestors in common with a prince -- *maybe*!

On that score, I have some distant ancestors (although slightly closer, and actually confirmed!) in common with a famous Labour peer about 80 years ago.

So we may be tied. ;)

Nah, but I sure have to know how to use search engines for a living.

Now -- it was Maureen who came up with your stunning von Gfug to start with here, remember!

And -- it was lulabelle who found Camilla in the census -- and then I had to find her at a different site with a different name ;) Cpig indeed ...

Well, Maureen isn't around, and the suspense is killing me, so Sally -- here's what she found in the International Genealogy Index. (It is an "extracted" record, which means it comes straight from official records and is reliable.)

"Preussen" is Prussia = Germany.

CUNO JULIUS VON GFUG-VOLLERSDORF
Birth: 17 JAN 1862
Christening: 20 JUN 1862 Jerusalem, Berlin Stadt, Brandenburg, Preussen
Father: GUSTAV ADOLPH VON GFUG-VOLLERSDORF
Mother: SOPHIE AMALIE SCHUBERT
Batch No.: C998341

So what do you think about that?

That is your great-great-grandfather, if I've got the number of greats right. Camilla's father.

If you google the name "von gfug", this is one of the search results:

http://gsteinbe.intrasun.tcnj.edu/royalty/ahnenreihe/Bernhard.html

European Royalty during World War II:
Genealogical Tables

Bernhard, Prince of the Netherlands (1911-____)
and
Aschwin, Prince of Lippe-Biesterfeld (1914-____)
...
Great-Great-Grandparents
Caesar Alexander, Count von Wartensleben (1785-1851)
Friederike Wilhelmine von Gfug (1789-1831)

Great-Great-Great-Grandparents
# Johann Friedrich Carl von Gfug (1741-1816)
# Johanne Juliane von Lestwitz (1756-1824)

You actually could come from the same von Gfugs -- and given that it's hardly a common name, I would suppose that you do.

Okay Maureen -- go ahead and give Sally the details from the IGI. ;)

Sally, if you want to try again first, search the IGI like this:

given name CUNO
surname VON GFUG
region GERMANY

(You select the region from a list when you click the arrow under Region)

Don't fill in anything else.

Then click Search!

This is horrible, I can't be back here until latish tomorrow afternoon probably, and I'm going to miss your discoveries.

Once you've found the surprise in the IGI, Sally, google "von gfug".

http://www.google.co.uk

and look down near the bottom of the first page of results.

You never know ...

EvieBeavie

EvieBeavie Report 14 Mar 2009 03:03

Oh, the suspense.

Sally: search the IGI.

http://www.familysearch.org/eng/search/igi/search_igi.asp

Select Germany for the region, and just search for the name of the person we know was born in Germany.

Oh my goodness, look at him!

What amazing luck.

Sally, you have to copy what you find into this thread.
