Are your brothers names family names?

Evelyn

Evelyn Report 18 Dec 2009 16:04

I was named Evelyn Patricia Kathleen,
Evelyn after my godmother who was Evelyn Goddard Fenwick(dont know if spelling is correct} I dont recall ever meeting Evelyn. As I have a godmother I guess I must have been christened though where and when I dont know. We went to live in Weymouth when I was 2 years old so think I must have been christened prior to leaving London, I was born in Balham, Patricia because my mother liked the name and Kathleen I dont know why, maybe Aunt Kate was Kathleen?
Thanks again for your interest

It would be much easier if I lived on the mainland. At the moment my OH needs me around he has problems with his eyes and I have to take him to the eye clinic every week. I am 77 and dont like travelling alone.
I think Dianes time at Springfield would have been prior to her marriage.
I have never worked out how she arrived in London, maybe she did train as a nurse, I just dont know.Where she was and what she was doing in her teens I have no idea because prior to 1929 i can find no trace of her.
I have heard of brick walls but this is more like an iron curtain.
Thank you for your interest, it is much appreciated

Oh dear - not a possibility then. I think they offer a research service but it's expensive, I believe and with possible doubt on her name, perhaps not feasible.

Evelyn

Evelyn Report 17 Dec 2009 20:42

That will be very difficult as I am in the Channel Islands

Those records at LMA might still be worth a look though. You'd have to go there though or get someone to go for you - not online.

Ann I dont think she was a trained nurse, she sometimes talked of taking Patients out and how embarassing it was sometimes

Was she a nurse? There might be records of her training. Was this before she was married? There are records of staff of Springfield Hospital (I assume you mean the one in London)at London Metropolitan Archives. But of course if she was using a different name then she'd be hard to find!

I have been in touch with the Stornoway gazzette, they were most helpful and published letters on several occasions for me but there were never any replies. I have also had help from the local museums but sadly they could find no trace of Diane either
I have my doubts that Diane ever changed her name legally but she told so many fibs she probably couldnt remember her own name in the end.
All this makes it so hard to find any trace of her..
I cannot find any trace of her prior to 1929 when she married my father Herbert Roy in Wandsworth London. How she came to be in London I dont know, I believe at some stage she worked at Springfield mental hospital.
Many thanks to you all for your help and interest

Evelyn

you have made progress so be encouraged.

Have you written to the localnewspapers to see if an older resident can identify your family?

1911 Scotland census has not been released yet! that may hold all the answers!!!

Tabitha

Tabitha Report 17 Dec 2009 10:27

It could have been a name she chose herself - you could do that even in the late 1800' s - Silly question - have you tried the 1901 census & 1911 for her parents & auntie.

If she had changed her name that would explain why you can't find a Diane in the birth records - Kew have name change documents from around 1851 & lists.

May be a new twist on an old story - my friend at work was called after a family member (Beryl Ann K******) she hated the name - as soon as she was old enough she changed it by Deed Poll to Ann K******. Her marriage cert is in the name Ann K*****. You won't find any mention of Beryl K****** except on her birth Cert.

I know for a fact Diane (Diana) was very popular between 1910 & 1920 with the higher classes - they were quite into goddess names & the Art Deco age carried it on. If she came from a military family or those in India its not surprising she wanted a fantasy name instead of a boring family name.

Its all worth a try - why were you called Evelyn? Did she ever say?
I believe somewhere back you told me she was a dreamer.

Evelyn

Evelyn Report 16 Dec 2009 19:32

Sometimes it is very hard to think positive.

Everyone tells me how unlikely it was that mothers name was Diane(very unusual in those days) It is the name that was on her marriage cert also her death cert

Evelyn - it could be a start - never give up hope - its all here somewhere

Jan that looks very interesting,I wonder if Ishbel was born later. Mother was always mentioning cousin Ishbel.
I dont know if Kate was mums aunt on her mothers or fathers side so it makes it much more of a puzzle.
Thank you so much for your interest

I have followed up all the suggestions that have been given to me all to no avail.
I am VERY grateful to you all for your interest and help but am feeling a bit
dispondant with all the brickwalls we come up against.
I just cannot find Diane prior to her marriage in 1929.
Thats if Diane was her name, my thoughts are in that direction now, did she for some reason change her name.?

Tabitha

Tabitha Report 16 Dec 2009 07:57

chance would be a fine thing - I think she has lost heart in finding Diane now - Wayne in OZ is on the trail in Bengal with the LDS records,
