Good morning everyone and I hope you are all well.

Time for this thread to have another little airing :-)

It has been put to me that the name 'Diana', may be a shortened form of 'Murdina'. I know we had looked at various Donaldinas etc., but Murdina is a new name to me. Fans has had a quick look on the 1911 Scottish Census and come up with the following :

Your SR Births Search Returns
You searched for: Surname: "macleod"; Surname Option: Exact; Forename: "murdina"; Forename Option: Prefix; Sex: "Female"; Year From: 1900; Year To: 1911;

34 1911 MCLEOD MURDINA F HARRIS NORTH /INVERNESS

What we could really do with is finding out if any of these Murdinas had a cousin Donald and an Aunt Kate. They re the two names which cropped up most in the story. I think there is an option on adding another name to the search without buying credits.

I can't do much today because I am busy but, if anyone would like to make a start and let us know how far they get, that would be wonderful. I will be back as soon as I can.

Hope you are all well. Cx <3

Apologies to both Sally and Joonie for my late arrival...........it was a surprise to see this thread pop up again!

Thank you for the link Sally but nothing to be found I'm afraid.

Joonie.....thanks for that theory. I am still in touch with Evelyn and will pass it by her to see what she thinks. Have to admit that I have never come across the name
Emerentiana before - I can understand why anyone would want to change it :-D

JoonieCloonie Report 23 Jun 2014 03:30

I've read ... some ... of this thread ... I have to admit not very much :-)

I agree with something said early on, that it is worth considering that Leslie was Diane's father's surname ... possibly because the parents weren't married but I wonder also whether MacLeod might be a stepfather's surname if Diane's mother (re)married when Diane was young.

___________________________________________________________

just browsing at familysearch for Leslie births in India I thought this one could be interesting ... because as also mentioned Diane was such a very unusual name (Diana possibly, but Diane so unlikely) ...

this birthdate matches exactly with Diane's stated age at death

https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/FGWJ-4JY

Name: Emerentiana Monica Leslie
Gender: Female
Christening Date: 02 Jun 1906
Christening Place: Honzada, Bengal, India
> Birth Date: 23 May 1906
Father's Name: John Francis Leslie
Mother's Name: Theroza
Indexing Project (Batch) Number: C75043-8

very unusual name for the English ... there is only one Emerentiana in the entire GRO index in England/Wales (1863)

might an Emerentiana have been 'Tiana' or have shortened her name or had it shortened to Diane (or Diana and then Diane)?

___________________________________________________________

the mother is Theresa spelled variously ... but it may be that there was more than one John and Theresa couple, although there seem to be no overlaps in the ones I found

https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/FGGL-F2W
Joan and Marjorie Leslie, born 1892, died Jan and Feb 1892, Burma Bengal India, father John Leslie, seem likely to be twins who survived only briefly
- edit - actually there must be two John Leslies, at least - Joan and Marjory Leslie were born 7 Sep 1891 and died 21 Jan 1891 and 6 Feb 1892, mother Eleanor Ada Chandler - the other births all seem to be to the same parents as Emerentiana

___________________________________________________________

There was an earlier Emerentiana Leslie, died 1906 aged 68 in Bengal ... possibly John's mother (died three months before John's daughter Erementiana was born) ...
https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/FG2Q-BXS

___________________________________________________________

the relevance of this would all be dependent on Theresa DeSilva Leslie having remarried to a MacLeod ........ of which I can of course find no record ... and in fact she quite probably died in Rangoon Bengal India in 1935 as Leslie
https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/FGK5-BT5

but I can't see a death for John Francis Leslie

___________________________________________________________

this has got much longer than I planned ... no idea I would find they had so many children!

is it possible that the MacLeods in Scotland gave Diane that surname and the story about her father, I don't know why ... ?

or maybe that the later children were not actually John Leslie's ... Theresa became Thereza with the birth of Erementiana and thereafter, I wonder whether because she was the one arranging the baptising ...

Thanks for all the ideas.....

A television programme has been mentioned before but there were personal reasons as to why Evelyn thought it would not be the right way to go - we have to respect that.

I'm pretty sure Viv or someone did a search of FIBIS a long time ago but thanks for the reminder.

I saw that the Indian bmd's announcement the other day and I think Viv has/is looking through them - I will check with her to make sure though.

Keep it coming folks......and thanks again.... :-)

Not found anything yet but have just found this site and looks like it could be a good site for anyone looking for India info
FIBIS Databases

Volunteers from the Families in British India Society (FIBIS) have transcribed loads of data – and it is all available for free. Just go to their search engine, and enter your ancestor’s surname. Don’t forget to browse the site, as it has lots of useful information, and annual membership is very reasonable. As well as lots of data from church records, it also has information from wills, bonds etc.

I certainly wouldn't say that we have given up on the search, it's just knowing where to search next!

Yes indeed,

It's a long time until we get the next set of census records and Diane should be there.

Dad was convinced that his mother was truthful and her strong opinion about the restrictions of living in a deeply religious community in Stornoway was something that stuck with him.

Dad was a civil servant, but I guess that because his mother was dead they didn't check her information when they cleared him.

The family records rings true, they moved quite often when Dad was growing up.

I would consider going to Stornoway if I thought there was anything to be gained from it.

Hi Diane.
Pretty sure that in those days, proof of ID was not required.
In any case, Evelyn said right at the beginning that all the family documents were lost during the war, which is why she has such a problem now.
Like doing a jigsaw without the picture. :-( :-(
