Has anybody looked at Agnes Annie Leslie who died in Wandsworth 1914.
She was born in Scotland abt 1857 so is too old to have been Dianes mother, but think there may be a family link .
From 1881 Agnes was working for a family named White who lived at 86 Marine Parade Brighton. Abigail White was born in South Africa. as were her two nieces,Jessie & Linda who were living with her.
I think Agnes was born in Stornoway & her parents were George Leslie & Margaret (possibly nee Toye although her mother has been transcribed as Gow)
George Leslie´s mother was Susan, born England & if I have the right family, they were living on Stornoway in 1841 & 51.
Thought I would put this up as not much Leslie info has been researched.
The connections with Stornoway,Brighton & Wandsworth were interesting.
Haven´t found Agnes in 1911 as I haven´t got full access.

Hello Sally. All things are possible in this search :-D

We have wondered if the Goddard-Fenwicks took her in but are trying to establish if there was a connection somewhere. Maybe a link with Diane's stories of Stornoway.........?

We search on.

I am waiting for a reply from the Dorset Archives re the newspaper cutting Evelyn mentioned and I have bought the two magazines we talked about. It looks as thought the PF doesn't have a 'looking for column' anymore so I may just write a letter to them instead to see if they will publish it.

The Ys magazine can take up to three months to publish a request and they are done on a rather hit and miss basis it seems. No harm in trying though :-D

Hi Cynthia
Did you ask about 22 Terrapin Road? (re P M Macleod who is in the 'phone books at that address 1927-1929). It's not too far from Dafforne Road.
Thanks
Julie

Thanks Choccy.........Fans is being ominously quiet.....must be suffering
from Hurricane Syndrome...... :-D

My kind archivist tells me that the Longley Road address was occupied by a couple by the name of Martin and Harriet Rutter during the years 1926-30. The address where our Evelyn's future grandparents lived was inhabited by Harry and May Robinson and Herbert and Emily Roy. No single women around. :-(

Thank you Jan and Choccy.....hopefully, it is the quiet searching which will bring results.

I will try and consult the Oracle on the census issues as she can usually see things at a glance whereas I go a bit cross-eyed! I know she has a hurricane aged 3 staying with her at the moment, so she may be a bit....er.......shattered :-D :-D

I have emailed my friendly contact at Wandsworth to see about the Electoral roll for that address 1926-29 and have also given her the address where Diane's husband lived - just in case they were together..... :-)

Right.....where's that Fans....... Faaaaaaaaaaan

I had a look at a WW1 Nurses file while I was at Kew yesterday, for a Catherine Macleod, just on the off chance. The details don't seem to fit anything we know about Diane as Catherine was an QAIMNS Nurse from 1914-Oct 1918 when she left for "urgent private reasons" (no explanation). She had previously been working at the London Hospital, Whitechapel. No age or date of birth given, but she was single and her mother, Mrs Macleod (very helpful- no christian name or initial!) lived at 10 St Bernards Cres, Edinburgh, which was also given as Catherines address in Oct 1918.

Doesn't seem likely for there to be any connection, although the fact that she was a nurse in London is interesting. Perhaps someone could have a look on Scottish/English 1911 census for her, just in case.

Hi Jooleh,

I emailed the London School last weekend but haven't received a reply as yet but, of course, it may be half term. Not sure what info they would hold but it's worth a shot.

Evelyn has said that her mother had a soft Scottish accent so Scotland is definitely a 'yes' :-D

As for the hospital, Evelyn has always said that her mother had told her she had worked there and, according to a connection on FB, it was very common for girls from Stornoway to go to London to nurse.

Now, as for the possibility of her mother being one of the GF girls.......I'm not sure we have looked at that............so........I wonder?

:-S :-S :-S :-S :-S

Jooleh Report 25 Oct 2011 22:31

Tracey's thoughts are interesting. I too wondered if Diane had been discovered by the GF"s, perhaps because she had some musical talent. But I also have this strong feeling that there must be some other more substantial connection to them.
I also strongly believe that she must have lived in Scotland at some point- she couldn't have made all the memories of Fort George up.
Like everyone no doubt I just find it really strange that she never mentioned her mother. I did wonder if her mother may have had a mental illness and was in Springfield Hospital and that's why she went to work there or her mother was one of the GF sisters and it was covered up.
If only we could connect her to a Macleod - that would be a major breakthrough!
