Thanks Annie......on her marriage certificate ,in 1930 Diane states that her father is deceased so probably no connection. You're lucky to have been able to get to the NA though. I find their website quite difficult.

Wisechild, Evelyn is fine. She has told me that she is reading this thread but cannot reply at the moment.

Hi Kay, I would have to remind myself about any Scottish wills.....but I know that the passenger lists have been well and truly combed for all sorts of combinations of name - it's all somewhere on here. However, if anything new has been added recently, it may be worth taking another look.

The thing is, it's so easy to forget what has and what has not been done in the last 4 years. This is why I am trying to get some salient points together.

I am tired of hitting constant brickwalls re Evelyn's baptism. At the moment, we have absolutely no ideas as to where it took place.

FBG - in one of her awake moments ( ;-) commented recently that it doesn't hurt to go over things again because she isn't perfect!! I love that.......must type it twice......she isn't perfect! :-D :-D

Have been looking at a Leslie at the National Archives today - Allan Charles Malcolm Leslie. He was an officer in the Gordon Highlanders and had a very complicated private life! A very wealthy family too - his father may have been born in Scotland but Allan and family lived in Sussex and London. He married in 1908 - have all the info, and divorced and remarried in the 1930's - again have looked at the divorce files. Haven't found whether he served in India (I think not), although he was in South Africa and was in the Army at the relevant time. Can't find any evidence of course, about him fathering a child though and haven't found any connection to Stornoway.

Thank you Sue. :-D

Amanda, thanks for your kind offer but it may be best to get a bit more evidence first.. Would hate you to waste money............ :-)

Haven't done anything on here today as been hithering and thithering. Hope to settle down to it this week though.

Very grateful for all efforts. :-D

Amanda,

Amanda, Report 20 Apr 2013 22:17

Dear Evelyn and All,

In the last few days I have read all these pages twice.
As much as I would like to, I can't help much as my Scottish knowledge of researching is nil!
Diane may have covered up who she was, or she simply may not have known her mother and not been registered, especially if she died when Diane was born, where ever that might have been.

As Diane was still young when WW1 broke out, she would have still needed a home if her father went to war. If she never saw him again she would be relying on someone to give her information about him.

My question is, the 3 Robert's from the WW1 deaths, page 2 I think, although they are not the right unit, could one of them be him?
If we can rule them out then I have nothing to offer in the way of help, but if they are then still possibles, and if anyone thinks it might help Evelyn's search I will order them.

I will leave it a few days to see what others think in case there is a better lead to spend some money on.

My friends Nan thought she was put in a home aged 3, but she is at home in 1911 aged 6, so young memories do get muddled over time.

This one from 1881 would be the first one I order.

Jan, that marriage rings a bell but I would have to go through the thread to find it. I've started with what we have looked at re Robert MacLeod.......- 'tis enough to give me an 'eadache!! ;-)

Wisechild, Mata Hari was Dutch and Rudolph was of Scottish origin - so her skin colour would have been light but, wouldn't it just be the icing on the cake if there was a connection. :-D :-D :-D :-D

wisechild

wisechild Report 20 Apr 2013 14:23

I love the theory about Mata Hari.........but I think someone would have mentioned before now if Diane was mixed race. Her family could hardly miss the fact.

is this another "red herring" just trying to connect surnames :-)

Marriages Jun 1919
Goddard James R Macleod Paddington 1a 212
MacLeod Jean Goddard Paddington
Donald and Kate who we have looked at in 1901 have a daughter Jean but with the middle initial A

Good luck Cynthia I did that a few weeks ago and re read the full thread and it makes you question everything all over again ;-)

I used to work in the dept in the NHS that looked after all the transfer of records between GP's and I'm almost sure records foe deceased patients were only kept for a limited time. Also given that Diane passed away 50+ years ago its unlikely that records still exist, but I have someone I can ask. Will let you know in the next day or 2.

Cynthia

If people have secrets - they often do what they feel necessary to keep them - no matter what - but somewhere in the secret-keeping there is often an element of truth! The fact remains that Evelyn's mother was born - there must be a record, or some sort, somewhere.

I suppose it would shorten the thread if we all deleted our non-relevant replies Traciey, but it may be best for me to do a catch up first......to save people going over the same stuff. I've started - but only got to page 10.....and am x-eyed!!

Jan, would they still be available after all this time though? I'll have a word with Evelyn and see if she can remember the names of any surgeries from back then.

JannieAnnie? - I'm so pleased to see that someone else's brain works like mine............. ;-)

jansmith

jansmith Report 19 Apr 2013 21:02

I wonder if there would be any medical records for Diane anywhere in storage and if they would have any" clues"?

Traciey

Traciey Report 19 Apr 2013 16:25

Its funny what all our brains come up with, but that's what we need. I'm slowly ruling that one out that I posted, D M Leod(image reads McLeod) living with her aunt, found her in 1901 in Stornoway with her mother Christina McLeod(Robertson) and the D stands for Donildina and I think she was sent to Hull to live with her aunt after her mothers death, just got a few more things to do before I totally rule her out. Is it best to delete all the posts not related once I've ruled her out?

I know I've posted about a McLeod but to be honest here in Scotland it interchanges over the years, some families use MacLeod and some McLeod. Diane spelt it MacLeod but its not to say further back the family might of been McLeod. A friend of mine is MacPherson and it turns out his grandfather used McPherson, they are actually from Stornoway too.

EDIT* RULED OUT, NO CONNECTION FOUND
