Cynthia - India records:-

When I 'phoned the British Library last year I was told that only a very small percentage of the India Records were available to look at online

The majority of the records can ONLY be searched at the British Library, and even so, 20-30% of the returns are missing.

I posted about this on P82 of this thread because I thought it was worth a search.

0207-412-7873 is the 'phone number of the Asian & Indian Studies Room at the British Library to order a remote search = £36 per name over a period of 5yrs.

At least it may rule out the India Records, if nothing else

Hi.

Now that we know about Robert having been killed in a car crash, I think Kathy is picking up on most possibilities in Scotland.

Diane always claimed that she was born in Delhi - as stated on the note which Evelyn has given us. Have to admit that I am not very well up on search Indian records. :-(

I'm not sure about the surname thing Sue.....it seems that MacLeod is used by Diane all of the time. :-S

 Sue In Yorkshire.

Sue In Yorkshire. Report 3 May 2013 14:34

But if he died in a car crash it would more than likely be in Scotland around Fort St George surely.

I have looked on India Office Family research site and also FIBIS site but as we don't know where they lived in India there are lots of Cemeteries.

In just one of the burial index for Benghal there is 44 pages of burials.

It will take sometime looking through it all.

Thinking outside the box..

Has anyone thought that Macleod/Mcleod could be one of the fathers names not nessessarily be his srurname.

It could be also DL's mothers maiden name.

wisechild

wisechild Report 3 May 2013 13:51

If he died in 3rd q 1911 he should be on the census.
If it is true that he was dead when Diane married, perhaps he was killed in WW1.
If he was a widower, it could explain why Diane was sent to Stornoway.
Just another theory, to add to the hundreds.

Back again............

Things have moved on just a little.

Evelyn has found a note given to her by her recently deceased brother in the 1980's.

The note says:

She has found a piece of paper which was given to her by her recently deceased brother, in 1980's.

The note says.

"Born Diane Leslie Macleod, India,4th or 5th June 1906 , father served there with Seaforth Highlanders.

Returned to Scotland ,Fort George, Inverness.

Father killed in car crash, Diane then went to live with Aunt Kate in Stornoway,

There were cousins there in the household mothers favourite was called Donald.

I have no knowledge of mum's mother as she never mentioned her, I always thought she probably died giving birth to mum.. I don't know when mum moved to London only know she worked at Springfield Mental Hospital, she met Dad and the rest you know. "

++++++++++++++++++

I have had a word with Kathy who is more than willing to check Scottish deaths to see if Robert died in Scotland........so please, there is no need for anyone to use credits for SP. :-)

Kathy's thoughts are that it is quite possible that the Diane was fostered out to a family rather than being sent to blood relatives.

So, does anyone have a clue as to how to go about searching for a possible foster child in Scotland during the period c1906-1920?? :-S :-S :-S

Hi everyone,

Just wondering if anyone is able to visit the LMA in the near future?

It seems as though the records for the next two most likely parishes for Evelyn's baptism are held at the LMA. If no one can help, I will contact their Family Research Centre.

Thanks. :-D

Have posted my summary of military findings on Robert Macleod (page 102)

All items marked * need to be checked and researched further, if poss, to eliminate or confirm! So if any kind people would like to volunteer to check out the following * items, please can they pm me telling me which one(s) they'd like to do, then I can make sure we're not duplicating efforts and make sure every item is covered . I'll also add names on this thread as to who is doing what - I'm doing Item 11. Thank you to anyone who can help!

Here's the list

1 Although there appears to have originally some doubts in the thread about whether the 1Bn Seaforths were in India at the time of Diane’s birth, they were there in 1908 as men of that battalion were awarded the 1908 India General Service Medal ( page 102*)

2 They were also in India on the 1911 census which also lists women and children in the barracks (page 28)*

3 Various suggestions of men in the 1Bn Seaforth Highlanders have been put forward as possibilities, both men named Robert MacLeod/McLeod and Robert Leslie including men who were killed in WW1 -not officers, though, men with WW1 Medal cards, men with service records on Ancestry for WW1 – not officers - and London Gazette entries (See pages 1, 2, 16, 56, 62, 65, 66, 96 )*

4 Medal records for men named Robert McLeod/Macleod prior to WW1 have been searched (pages 83, 98, 102)*.

5 Some passenger list entries have been mentioned (pages 50,93, 102)*

6 Some census entries have been suggested (pages 2, 25,91,)* and an electoral roll entry (page 92*)

7 Pre WW1 service records have been searched (pages 46)*
Suggestions for pre WW1 officers (page 25,82)*

8 Army marriages have been searched (page 65) and Army births (page 47)*

9 Some findings on officers of the Indian Army, although of course the Seaforth Highlanders were British Army who just happened to be serving in India (pages 14, 99, 102)*

10 Findings on Scotland People in War Returns (page 14)*

11 I did some searching (in 2009!) of the Army Lists which I sent by pm to Evelyn
Had a look at some Army Lists today. Quite time consuming, so couldn't look at many* ANNIE LAURIE

Robert Macleod, the military angle!

The only facts we have on the supposed father of Diane Leslie Macleod is the information supplied by Evelyn from Diane’s marriage cert
My mother was Diane Leslie Macleod, she was born in 1906 in Delhi her father was Robert Macleod, Major, 1st Battalion Seaforth Highlanders who was deceased when Diane married in 1929. Diane also mentioned being at Fort George.
Although there appears to have originally some doubts in the thread about whether the 1Bn Seaforths were in India at the time of Diane’s birth, they were there in 1908 as men of that battalion were awarded the 1908 India General Service Medal ( page 102*) and were apparently in India from 1903 onwards (page 67). No officer named R Macleod. They were also in India on the 1911 census which also lists women and children in the barracks (page 28)*. That needs to be checked, too.
Various suggestions of men in the 1Bn Seaforth Highlanders have been put forward as possibilities, both men named Robert MacLeod/McLeod and Robert Leslie including men who were killed in WW1 -not officers, though, men with WW1 Medal cards, men with service records on Ancestry for WW1 – not officers - and London Gazette entries (See pages 1, 2, 16, 56, 62, 65, 66, 96 )*
Surviving WW1 Officers files for men named Robert Macleod/McLeod at the National Archives have been searched and none seem to fit. (page 35,66)
If he went on to serve after 1920 his file might still be with the MOD but those leaving the Army after 1920 but before WW2 are due to be released to the National Archives but no date given as to when that will be.
Medal records for men named Robert McLeod/Macleod prior to WW1 have been searched (pages 83, 98, 102)*.
Some passenger list entries have been mentioned (pages 50,93, 102)*
Some census entries have been suggested (pages 2, 25,91,)* and an electoral roll entry (page 92)*
Pre WW1 service records have been searched (page 46)*
Suggestions for pre WW1 officers (page 25,82)*
Army marriages have been searched (page 65) and Army births (page 47)*
Some findings on officers of the Indian Army, although of course the Seaforth Highlanders were British Army who just happened to be serving in India (pages 14, 99, 102)*
Findings on Scotland People in War Returns (page 14)*
I did some searching (in 2009!) of the Army Lists which I sent by pm to Evelyn
Had a look at some Army Lists today. Quite time consuming, so couldn't look at many*

I looked at 1906 - no R MacLeod in Seaforth Highlanders, 1916 there was a R McLeod, temporary Lieutenant 18/5/1916 in Seaforth Highlanders, and I looked at 1920, when this man did not appear.

A problem is that we don’t know when he was a Major – at Diane’s birth or much later? Do we accept that he was an officer, in which case we can discount non –officers.
Do we accept that the regiment (and battalion) is right?
Do we even know that the name is right, but as it’s all we have, perhaps we have to!

Added 11/5 Have made a start looking at the Army List for Robert MacLeod (Army List is a list of all serving officers, with rank and regiment, sometimes produced quarterly). Have just looked at Dec 1905, Jan 1906, Apr 1906, Jul 1906 and Oct 1906, when we might have expected him to be in the Army. No R Macleod in Seaforth Highlanders, although there are R Macleod's in other regiments.

Added 18/5 Checked Army Lists Jan, Jul, Oct 1907, Jan, Apr, Jul, Oct 1908, Jan, Apr, Jul, Oct 1909. No R Macleod in Seaforth Highlanders.

Added 12/6 Checked Army Lists Jan, July, Oct 1910, Jan, Apr, Jul, Oct 1911, Jan , Jul, Oct 1912. No R Macleod in Seaforth Highlanders.

Added 29/6 Checked Army Lists Jan, Apr, Jul, Oct 1913, Jan, Apr, Jul 1914 and Jan, Apr 1915. No R Macleod in Seaforth Highlanders.

Added 6/7 Checked Army Lists Jul, Oct 1915, Jan, Apr, Jul, Oct 1916, Jan, Apr, Jul, Oct 1917. No R Macleod in Seaforth Highlanders.

Looked at all 12 R Macleod/McLeod WW1 Officers files at the National Archives (Oct-Nov 2013). Results below

Julie - it's murder trawling back through all the pages isn't it? That's one reason why I think it may be useful to keep one post per topic and then chat inbetween - if you know what I mean. :-)

If you would like to keep plugging away at the speculative birth - that would be great.

Sue, thanks for the offer - so far we have the following who are trying to co-ordinate what has already been found:

Myself Goddard-Fenwicks

Renes Springfield Hospital

Annwas Military sites etc.

Traciey Patrick MacLeod

Kathy & Vicci The 107 year old woman

Chris is good at census

Sue, it would be helpful if you could gather all the passenger lists which have been looked at on here and post them (with the findings) on one post please.

(I don't think anyone else has volunteered to do that yet - but, if I am wrong, please get in touch with Sue) :-)

Please come in with your ideas as to how to make things easier on here without us having to constantly backtrack. :-D

Thanks Julie, much appreciated. I have managed to gather a good bit on these particular MacLeod's/McLeod's but could not find that marriage or where they disappeared to in 1911. Weird I have that birth on Doreen S MacLeod saved in my shoe box but can't remember what I did with her, I will trawl through my shoebox to see if I saved anything else on her, Patrick's mother's maiden name is Shannon so hopefully we can find out who she is. At the moment I've traced the line of these MacLeod's/McLeod's to Luss in Scotland. Will dig some more and post if I find anything different to what's already been posted.

Jooleh

Jooleh Report 28 Apr 2013 19:01

Just copying an extract from Traciey's recent post so everyone knows what I'm talking about:
"Has anyone looked at the MacLeod family living across the road from Evelyn Goddard Fenwick, they are there for a number of years. Evelyn is at number 42 Foulser Road and Patrick MacFarlane MacLeod and his wife Norah Douthwitt Maud MacLeod live at number 31 Foulser Road. Can't find their marriage though if anyone wants to have a look. This is Patrick at home with his parents before his marriage to Norah. I can't find Patrick in 1911. "

I had a good look at this family but it wasn't exhaustive so hopefully Traciey you will find something I didn't.

Patrick and Norah married in Ireland in 1903 and in 1911 they are in Canada:

1911 Census of Canada
Home / 1911 / British Columbia / Vancouver / 2 Vancouver City / page 32

Macleod Patrick 24 Cambridge Apts. M Head M Apr 1876 35
Macleod Norah Douthwill   F Wife M May 1872 39

Macleod Norah Gertrude   F Daughter S Jan 1910 1

Various bits of info have been posted about these Macleods mainly on pages 60, 73, 74 & 77.

When EGF and PM lived opposite each other at 42 and 31 Foulser Road it really was exactly opposite- they could have waved to each other through the window. That was from 1918 until 1925.

Finally, the birth that continues to intrigue me:

Births Sep 1904   (>99%)
MACLEOD  Doreen S    Wandsworth  1d 727
McLeod  Doreen Shannon    Wandsworth  1d 727

I can find no further records for this child and wondered if she became Diane.

ref my post on pg 60 I wondered if she was born to Patrick's sister, Jessie Shannon Macleod, before her marriage in 1906.

Pure speculation of course!

Wouldn't it be so much easier if we could just download the thread and print it all off in one go instead of having to trawl back through 100+ pages!
