Evelyn

Evelyn Report 17 May 2009 23:20

Thanks Viv, I will make a list of questions to ask, it will be a very long one.
I feel sad on behalf of all you good people that tried so hard to help me, it must be disappointing to be beaten when you work so hard at something.
Honest I do believe in the gooseberry bush story.
Kind Regards
Evelyn

OK Evelyn
I think you should wait until you see mum, then she will tell you all you want to know.
Hopefully it will be many years.
I am working out the questions that I wish to ask a few people when I get there.

Do you think I should give up on this one and assume that the Gooseberry story is true after all. I feel sad not to have found what I was looking for. All the help that you have given me is much appreciated

Dear Vicci,

Thank you for your enquiry.

From the information that you gave me, I can tell you that the R27 series of records largely concentrates on the 1950s and ‘60s.

In the CRC series there are no pupil attendance records from Stornoway.

I have searched for the birth record of Diane Leslie MacLeod on the website

www.Scotlandspeople.gov.uk

but to no avail.

You may wish to try for yourself.

I have two more website addresses that you may find useful;

www.ceuig.com and www.stornowayhistoricalsociety.org.uk

and for the Seaforth Highlanders, an email for enquiries, [email protected]

The largest school on Stornoway is the Nicolson Institute, and they may have their own records of past pupils.

We do not have access to the 1911 census.

have posted this in relation to trying to find 1911 Scotland census / electoral roll data

http://www.genesreunited.co.uk/boards.asp?wci=thread&tk=1137442

I know that the 1911 Scotland census is not available but does anyone know if it is possible to get any info from it or if there are electoral rolls from that time that are accessible?

Hello Victoria We are only surmising that these are the correct people, because they have Kate Donald and Ishbel, we couldnt find those three names as Macleods anywhere else. I dont recall mum ever saying her uncle was a vicar but do remember her saying that all they were allowed to read on sundays was the bible and they always had to attend church, I just wish we could find where she attended school.

Vicci

Vicci Report 25 Mar 2009 19:47

mail from Rev MacLeod;

It doesn't really tell us much and in fact throws up more questions.

For instance, Donald and Kate:- you say that your mother mentioned Kate and cousins Donald and Ishbel but did she ever mention the MInister Donald and the link to Tarbat? Are you sure this is the right family or are we looking at them as the census has Kate and children Donald and Ishbel in?

Good Morning Victoria, Thank you for your help.
I have emailed Rev. John Macleod but have had no reply so I am glad to know you have managed to make contact with him, who knows he might even be one of the family. I dont know how you manage to sort all these problems out, all you girls are so clever and I admire you all so much.I still wonder if a Macleod married a Macleod, just wish I knew my grandmothers name, that could be key to solving this mystery.
My mother married as Diane Leslie Macleod to my father Herbert Roy in 1929, hopfully she used her real name, maybe not and that causes the mystery, I am quite confused now.

HI

I've managed to get through to the Reverend John MacLeod, I'm not sure that he's going to be much help but you never know. I'll let you know if I hear anything.
I've also emailed the Tarbat Discovery centre and the Highland Archives to see if they might have anything.

The birth of the Margaret Ann illegitimate daughter of Isabella, the record gives no further info other than she was born at tarbat and Isabella was a domestice servant.

Robert MacLeod births
1) 1872 son of Donald and Isabella parish of Lochs, Donald was a fisherman living in Lochs 1881 (surname spelling McLeod), census says Donald was a shoemaker.
Marriage of Donald and Isabella 1866 Lochs,
Donald parents Donald and Anne nee McDonnall
Isabella parents Murdo McLeod (!!) and Anne nee Morrison

2) 1874 son of Margaret MacLeod parish of Stornoway, illegitimate
I believe that Margaret married John Beaton and is with him in 1881 shows Robert as step-son in Stornoway

Parents of Murdo Macleod believe are John and Catharine
siblings Gormillia b.1821, Peggy (Margaret) b. 1829, Donald b. 1835
1841 living in Lochs.
