Can't believe we have been looking for Diane for so long to be honest. Ten years and counting. I can remember the excitement on here when the 1911 was published as we felt sure we would find her! Now, here we are, waiting for the 1921..... :-D

Thanks for the update .Perhaps the next census will help solve this puzzle!

Robert Macleod was looked at briefly on Evelyn's other thread as well:

Also in more depth at the start of this thread.

Hi Jansmith

Someone has alerted me to your post as I only nip in and out of here these days. Yes, Diane is still being looked for off and on. Evelyn keeps in touch via Facebook - she's such a lovely lady. JC got Evelyn to give a DNA sample last year and, whilst we have found some distant relatives, no one can give us a direct link - but the search goes on. I even have the DNA results on my computer......... :-D :-D

I vaguely remember the chap you mention being checked a while ago but thank you for thinking of this thread. Keep up the good work <3

Oh thanks, it's always been a puzzle I would have liked to have seen solved because of all the hard work people had put into it.

Thanks for replying. Just wondered if Robert L R Macleod had been looked at? 1939 living in Brentford and Chiswick District with wife Jessie. He was a retired Colonel RAMC

It might have made more sense to do it at Ancestry and upload at FTDNA, but it was Christmas and I'd been giving the Visa a workout already, and FTDNA's sale made it the economical choice. ;-) (about half the Ancestry price)

It used to be possible to upload FTDNA results to Ancestry -- I did it with YDNA results a few years ago when Ancestry was still doing YDNA testing -- but I don't think that's an Ancestry feature now. I will look into other places where the results can be uploaded for potential matching.

I will do GEDmatch though.

The night I first received Evelyn's results, I just put together some preliminary tables with the matches to the name MacLeod in their trees (and also McLeod) (and also those with Evelyn's father's surname), to segregate them from the mass of potential matches and from each other, just for starters. That kind of wore me out and I needed food.

I think I'll start by emailing the MacLeod potential matches with a bit of info about Evelyn's mum's story of her birth, and see whether the Robert MacLeod father in India and/or the Stornoway connection means anything to them.

Tabitha

You can transfer your Ancestry "Raw Data" to FTDNA free and view the matche, but to use their Chromosome Browser there is a small fee

You can also transfer your Ancestry Raw Data to My Heritage free plus GEDmatch.

Maximum coverage :-)

Dont forget to add the DNA file to Ancestry as well - it has loaded a whole heap of 5th cousins for me - Including one who keep promising he has a lead and disapears for months on end.

Is FTDNA the same as Ancestery by the way - is it worth me joining up with ETDNA and copy over my DNA file - I have an elusive father who moved about a lot having children with different young ladies and then moving on again. trying to track down more siblings 8 and counting so far.

We must be able to find Evelyn's mother somewhere.

Cynthia Report 8 Mar 2018 13:35

Boing indeed! Ahem......you did spell the surname as MACleod yourself two years ago :-D

Really hoping that this brings up something interesting and conclusive for Evelyn. If it does, we will have to have a party :-D :-D

BOING! The thread that would not die returns.

(And Cynthia, now I can blame you for my confusion, see my emails, when I kept spelling Evelyn's mother's name MCLeod instead of MACLeod! -- your post a few before this, 17 Sep 2017 07:40.)

On the last day of last year, a couple of hours before the big holiday sale at Family Tree DNA ended, I bought Evelyn a DNA test -- the "family finder" or autosomal DNA test that can turn up cousins, theoretically as distant as 5th cousins.

(This is the same test as Ancestry, 23andMe and various others offer. I happen to be familiar with FTDNA and like its facilities better. And it was the big sale there.)

Now I find myself in the position of not knowing what to do! My DNA adventures to date have all involved male-line (YDNA) testing and matching.

I'm going to embark on figuring it out, and probably consult the Help forums at FTDNA. Evelyn does have a few matches with people who have the surname MacLeod in their trees, so I can try to work out who has whom in their trees, and possibly contact likely candidates.

Just an update for the assembled breathless helpers. :-)

If anybody out there is learnèd in the ways of autosomal DNA, give me a shout and I can bring you in on the effort.

Looking at the names on the link, I found myself reminded of all the places we searched a few years ago. I thought of all the people who have literally spent hours and hours trying to fathom out this mystery. I even have a file of papers here at home on Diane Leslie McLeod :-D

I am try contacting the Stornaway Historical Society once more, just in case new records have been opened.

Evelyn remains quite well although she has had some health issues over the last couple of years. She is a lovely, lovely lady and it would be so wonderful to solve this mystery for her.

Thanks for replying Cynthia., It's one of those posts that I keep thinking "one day records will be available that will tell us who she is!"

My word....what a surprise to see this pop up again :-D

To be honest Jan, I really don't know without ploughing through the thread again. Probably worth a chance of looking though. I do sometimes wonder though, what name did Diane use as a child? Was she always known as Diane or as something else? Maybe we will never know.

Thanks for the reminder. Cx

Jan, a Caroline L MacLeod was born in Scotland in 1901 (and 2 other Caroline MacLeods between 1899 and 1903) ... so that is likely the source of that Caroline I would imagine ... not unusual names :-)
and we don't know of Diane ever mentioning a sibling

Cynthia how is Evelyn doing (otherwise!) ?
