Hi wisechild.....baptism is a funny thing at times. Strictly speaking, it is a once and for all experience.....C. of E. and R.C. churches do not baptise more than once...BUT it has been known for it to happen in the past....and has been linked to applying for parish relief etc.
No trace of a DLM can be found on any overseas records at the mo.... :-(
Hi Jan, I think we can safely say that it probably isn't her real name but a combination of something or other - especially the Leslie to which she was especially attached.
Onwards and upwards.............sigh.......

This is the school Evelyn Godard Fenwick taught at ,wondered how long ago this was put on their site and if it has been looked at by anyone? "The Archive of materials depicting life at CLSG over the ages was recently collated by Anne Savage and her team and then deposited , for permanent storage, with the London Metropolitan Archives which they then sorted and catalogued. These files are very easily accessed for interest and research purposes - London Metropolitan Archives, 40 Northampton Road, London EC1R 0HB. Tel: 020 7332 3881."

I should not have looked at this thread!! I, too am hooked.
Just for info re the Seaforth Highlanders
Unit History: Seaforth Highlanders The Regiment was officially formed in 1881 when the 78th and the 72nd Regiments of Foot were amalgamated as part of the Childers Reforms; however it can trace its history back a further 103 years prior to this date.
(There is a section here which I have not copied)
he 78th was raised by Francis Mackenzie, 1st Baron Seaforth (grandson of Kenneth Mackenzie, 4th Earl of Seaforth) in 1793 and named the 78th Ross-shire Buffs. The Regiment saw its first action in the Netherlands during the French Revolutionary War fighting at Nijmegen. In 1795 the Regiment was deployed to South Africa capturing the Cape Town, Wynberg and Muysenberg from the Dutch. The Regiment was then deployed to India to serve during the Second Mahratta War 1803-05 and under the command of Arthur Wellesley (who later became the Duke of Wellington) at the Battle of Assaye. The 78th also participated in the Invasion of Java of 1811 capturing the Dutch Fort Cornelis during the Napoleonic Wars (1803-1814). The Regiment returned to India in 1842 to serve in the First Anglo-Afghan War and then the Anglo-Persian War of 1857 fighting at the Battle of Khushab and Mohammerah. The 78th also served during The Indian Rebellion (1857-58) recapturing the town of Cawnpore and fighting at the first relief of Lucknow.
In 1881 both Regiments were amalgamated as part of the Childers Reforms to become The Seaforth Highlanders (Ross-shire Buffs, The Duke of Albany’s). The Childers Reforms restructured the British army infantry Regiments into a network of multi-battalion Regiments each having two regular and two militia battalions. The newly formed Regiment went on to serve in various foreign campaigns including; the Anglo-Egyptian War (1882 ), Tel El Kebir (1882), the Chitral Expedition 1895, the Second Sudan War (1896 – 98) fighting at the Battle of Atbara and the Battle of Khartoum, The Second Boer War 1899 – 1902 fighting at The Battle of Paardeberg and two World Wars.
I was wondering whether Evelyn's grandfather Robert, fought in the Chitral Expedition in India?
I have not gone back to the beginning of the thread, but does Evelyn know her Grandmother's name, ie wife of Robert Macleod?
There are several "Roderick" Macleods on the website Forces War Records, I expect others have gone down this route already.
I will keep digging!! Sue

Hi Jan, yes I contacted the school last year.................guess what? zilch :-(
Hi Sue and welcome.....Evelyn knows absolutely nothing whatsoever about her grandparents unfortunately.
Here is a shortened version of what we have discovered so far! Shortened???? ahhhhh.
DIANE LESLIE MacLEOD born c June 1906-8 India? (so she said).
No verification of this birth can be found whatsoever. Searches have been made of Indian, Scottish and English births by many people but to no avail as yet.
Possibilities: This is not her real name.
DIANE: Searches have been made under: Donaldina, Dolinda, Dolina etc. - nothing found.
LESLIE: She was very attached to her middle name of Leslie and insisted it was spelled that way. She gave the name to one of her sons. Some searches have been made re this name but maybe we need to do more.
MacLEOD : On her marriage certificate (1929 in London), she states her father to be Major Robert MacLeod of the 1st Seaforth Highlanders - deceased. Nothing of him can be confirmed despite extensive military searches being made. These can be found on ps 2-4 and 14-15 – 29 and 36 of the thread.
She told her family that she went to live on Stornoway with ‘Aunt Kate and cousins Donald & Ishbel (Isabelle)’. This family has been researched as probably the family of Rev. Donald MacLeod who was the minister of the church in Tarbat. The present Incumbent of that church has been contacted and was most helpful.
Various agencies in Tarbat have been contacted re this family and Diane but nothing found.
We have almost completed a 'family tree' on that particular MacLeod family but, someone has come forward who is related to them and does not think Diane links to them.
Diane stated that she went to school in Stornoway. The most likely school would be the Nicolson Institute. A search has been made for her under D.L.M but there is no sign of her under that name.
Other local schools have been contacted but there is nothing to be found under D.L.M.
There is no sign of a DLM on the 1911 Scottish census see p.41
The first absolute sighting we have of her is when she started work at Springfield Hospital in London 7.6.1927 - 19.6.1928. There are, apparently, no more notes in her file.
In 1929 she married, as Diane Leslie MacLeod, a Herbert R.J. Roy in London. Up until her marriage, she received a private allowance, source unknown.
The address given on her marriage certificate is 53 Khartoum Road, Wandsworth, London. The Electoral Roll for 1929 shows the family living at that address were named Kirby. There is no sign of Diane anywhere in Khartoum Road . She may just have been boarding there for a short time prior to her marriage.
Our Evelyn was born in 1932 at 44 Dafforne Road, Wandsworth and Diane and her husband show up there on the Electoral Roll.
Some research has been done on the other occupants but nothing worthwhile was found apart from the fact that one of the occupants was an Evelyn Goddard-Fenwick whom our Evelyn is named after and was her Godmother. See ps. 22-23 of this thread for more details.
Various living Goddard-Fenwick’s have been contacted but to no avail. You can pm me for details on that. We have, over the last couple of years, drawn up a fairly comprehensive family tree for the G-Fs but simply cannot trace the connection.
Just before the search drew to a halt last year, Evelyn remembered her mother reading a local newspaper (Dorset?)in the early 1950's and finding either an article or an obituary about a very old lady who had died in Stornoway aged 91. She stated that it was Aunt Kate. FBG travelled to the local office to look at the microfiche but, again - nothing.
Scotland's People was searched for possible deaths but again, we drew a blank.
At the moment, I am working to try and find where Evelyn was actually baptised, just in case any family members were included as Godparents. I am having lovely phone calls with the incumbent of the most likely parish church but no baptism as yet!!!
So this is where the search is up to so far and still we try........because of our fondness for Evelyn...
If anyone feels they would like to tackle any of the unresolved issues or re-check anything that has already been done….please do so. It may be that something has been missed or new information is available.
Thank you for reading this epistle....... :- Cx

Thank you Cynthia, for the facts about the elusive Diane Leslie Macleod. She's more invisible than my birth father!!
On the marriage cert for Diane, what are the names of the witnesses, you never know what may turn up.

I have read Susan'sthread she put on General.
SORRY-----..gonna throw a spanner in the works about the birth of the supposed DLM.
Now this is my 1st time of looking at this thread for months..
I think Georde D Leslie is the birth father and D Leslie(Macleod,Macleod,) with either one of the sevants from the 1901 census or there is a woman Macleod living around the area where he lived in 1901.
1901 census transcription details for: 9, Riverside, Thames Street, Wallingford St Peter, Wallingford
National Archive Reference: RG number: RG13 Piece: 1139 Folio: 58 Page: 13 Reg. District: Wallingford Sub District: Wallingford Parish: Wallingford St Peter Enum. District: 3 Ecclesiastical District: Wallingford St Peter City/Municipal Borough: Address: 9, Riverside, Thames Street, Wallingford St Peter, Wallingford County: Berkshire Name Relation Condition Sex Age Birth Year Occupation , Disability Where Born
LESLIE, George D Head Married M 65 1836 Artist (Painter) Marylebone, London
LESLIE, Lydia Wife Married F 56 1845 Marylebone, London
LESLIE, John F Son Single M 25 1876 Brewery Pupil Marylebone, London
LESLIE, Peter Son Single M 23 1878 Artist (Painter) Marylebone, London
LESLIE, Lydia Daughter Single F 17 1884 Artist (Painter) Wallfd, Berkshire
LESLIE, Mary Sister Single F 67 1834 Imbecile Marylebone, London
ROBERTSON, Bessie Servant Single F 42 1859 Hospital Nurse Tooting, London
TURDELL, Thomas L Grand Son M 1 1900 India
HUNT, Kate Servant Single F 23 1878 Housemaid (Domestic) Inkpen, Berkshire
SIMMONDS, Susan M Servant Single F 22 1879 Cook (Domestic) Enstone, Oxfordshire
BATTEN, Annie Servant Single F 23 1878 Parlourmaid (Domestic) Sotwell, Berkshire
TIZZARD, Mabel A Servant F 15 1886 Nursemaid (Domestic) Goring, Oxfordshire
Look at the list of servants and there is a Bessie Robertson Hospital Nurse 42 she is also on the 1881 census with the same family.(This may or not be the mother of DLM.) but because she was a Hospital nurse she may have put the baby in a family name.
Just my head working overtime.
Just going to look at some streets around Thames Street Wallingford St Peters and see if I can find a Mcleod.Macleod living in the area.
Another situation is Whoever Macleod,McLeod could have been one of his models with being an artist.

Thanks for that.....I will ask FBG to take a looksee when she has a moment. :-D
I have 'spoken' on line to Anthony Adolph - GR's resident genealogist, and he has asked me if we have spoken to the following gentleman...
Bill Lawson at http://www.seallam.com/coleisthu.htm.
To be perfectly honest, it is now too late at night for me to remember and I will have to plough back through the last 4 years. Just wondered if the name rings any immediate bells with anyone??
Night all......zzzzzzzzzzzzz

Quite interesting the middle name of Charles!! Another co-incidence?

Given the Fenwick/Leslie link, is it possible that Diane was Leslie (I think this has been looked into) and adopted the MacLeod name from living with Aunt Kate?

Good morning........that link business is weird indeed - just tried it........ :-S
Had a quick look at the recommended site..........have you seen the costs? :-0 :-0
I would certainly contact the gentleman if we had a bit more solid evidence to give him. At the moment though, this story could have it's origins in Timbuctoo!
Vanessa, I like the thinking about the Fenwick/Leslie link.......so will go and check if FBG has read my message yet.
Knowing her, she's probably avoiding me like the plague ;-)
I have a really busy day today so, if I don't reply quickly, please don't think I am being rude. :-)

She was said to 104 and NOT 91..And all Ev can remember it was after the war finished as she remembers...But before 1952 .I did find a Catherine Macleod aged 107 when she died on Isle of Lewis.....And had lived on...INDIA STREET.. Its on here somewhere. Got a bit of way with that with help but no end result.
I really do not know where to look next and so I will have call time I think and let all these other very good suggestions/ideas worked on..
I no longer am able to concentrate or type as long as I used to....But at least I still have most of me marbles and can get about so I am most grateful for that..
I nor Evelyn think she WAS born in India as she told a son of hers Fort George,Scotland..! We feel certain,Evelyn and I)Diane is NOT her real name and that she is most likely illegitimate..
Oh yea...Bill Lawson was looked at as was another Scots expert but the cost is too high.....Unless Ev wins the lottery of course...>:) Fans
