It's a thought Sylvia. Even if Diane did go to school in Stornoway, she may easily have left at the age of 12 and then gone to live with 'Aunt Kate' ??? Is that feasible?

(I do wish this site would allow us to highlight words!)

Patricia's a good name to follow actually - after all, it IS one of Evelyn's middle names!!!!

Fans dear, if you wish to go to Dorchester...........feel free, after all, you can't really go much further round the bend now can you?? ;-)

wisechild Report 10 Aug 2012 13:02

Could she have gone to a private school (was there such a thing in Stornoway?).
Just thinking that if she was of statutary school leaving age, or close to it, there may not have been room for her in the state school in such a small place.......always supposing that she did actually go to school there & her memories are not getting confused with schooling that she experienced somewhere else.
Just as a matter of interest has anybody looked at the school admissions for the London area on Ancestry?. Can´t remember the dates they cover.

Evelyn

Evelyn Report 10 Aug 2012 13:17

As Diane said she lived at Fort George in Inverness whilst her father was stationed there, I wonder what age she was then , is it possible that she went to school in Inverness at some stage.
Wherever she was educated they did a good job she spoke beautifully and had a wonderful vocabulary.

wisechild Report 10 Aug 2012 13:22

You had mentioned that before Evelyn, which is what made me wonder about a private school. Maybe one run by the military for forces children.
It´s about time you dusted that crystal ball. ;-) ;-) ;-) ;-)

Couple of questions.
No doubt the info is buried somewhere but don´t have time to trawl through 79 pages,
What are the exact details from your mother´s marriage cert Evelyn?.
Where did the marriage take place & who were the witnesses?
What was the exact date of the marriage?
What was your mother´s occupation?

Do you know who this might be-:
Diane L Roy b 4th quarter 1955 Cheshire MMN Wallace.
Is there any possible info that can be gained from the birth /marriage certs of your siblings (or yourself)
Still trying.

Cynthia Report 13 Aug 2012 16:00

Hi Wisechild, yep, the marriage cert has been 'done' - to death (if you know what I mean :-D)

It's interesting that the birth in Cheshire has the same name. I guess it must be a coincidence as our Diane had died by that date. :-(

Evelyn F-G stated in her will that she spent many happy years at the City of London Girls school teaching the violin. I wondered if that was where she first met Diane. I got in touch with the school earlier this year.........the answer was.....zilch. On both counts :-( :-(

Kathy, if you could do that, it would be wonderful but...........we need to change the age and get a list of those who were over 100. Leave it with me and I'll nag you-know-who and also get her thoughts on Chris's research.

Thanks everyone.

I am going to Somerset at the end of the month and will go to Dorchester to go through the papers there and try find the name of this woman and where she died.

I feel its the only way to go forward now as we have covered most things and I looked at/viewed all deaths of ...Kate/Cath etc over 100 years of age on SP all over Scotland and nothing adds up on a follow up on 1911 census of Scotland and England and Wales.

Really need that article from the Dorset Evening Echo ...1945 through to 1951 but prob around 1948 as Ev says she was about 15 when Diane mentioned it...

Feel like rubbish today....Back to bed soon for me.

I have been looking through the various pages of this site that Chris Ho posted on the previous page it looks very good and may hold something .

There are loads of Macleods but I am so confused with all the people on the thread of Evelyn's that I don't know what names would be important.

Has anyone else had a look that is more informed on the subject.

suex :-)

Cynthia

Cynthia Report 14 Aug 2012 07:56

Hi Sue, yes, I mentioned just after Chris's post that we have had a lot of contact with the Stornoway Historical Society and that Willie Foulgar has been really helpful in doing searches for us. There's just nothing we can get to grips with there at the moment :-(

Chris? You would NOT believe it but, when I looked at the link for the Glasgow newspaper, something else caught my eye and I had to look twice. There, in the births, is the announcement of a baby born in our local maternity hospital and I know the child and it's family!! The mother is Scottish and had obviously put notices in the Scottish newspaper. Small world eh?? :-D

I'm still wondering about the Patricia above but am rubbish at linking things together - takes me forever and a day! Parish records I am ace with - and that's my limit!!

If anyone would like to rootle away at women named Patricia who may be connected - please do. I've just got a feeling that Diane named our Evelyn after people to whom she was connected in some way. :-)

Good Morning All
I have often wondered why parents do such silly things to their children but I was christened Evelyn Patricia Kathleen but have always been known as Pat. I was wondering if perhaps Aunt Kate was the same.
It still puzzles me why Diane never mentioned her mother, maybe she died in childbirth.
Once again I thank you all for your input

I Am going to try and tackle this from another avenue ,My Oh is a war buff and he is going to look where the Seaforth Highlanders were in 1906 +or _1 yr
He has loads of books and movies on the war so you never know.

Evelyn do you know what Battalion he was in as there are 10 that we have found and we have found mention that the 3rd battalion was stationed at Fort George but that is not saying some of the others were not there as well.

If you knew for sure what Battalion he was in it would be a great help

MY Mother was bn in Maymyo Burrma because her Father also in the Forces was stationed there in 1932.
He was a Lance Sergent with the Oxford shire and Buckingham shire Light Infantry.

I am looking at my Mothers English Birth Cert now so I can't see why your Mother does not have an English one too.

Maybe if we can find him we find Diane so to speak :-D

suex :-D

On mothers marriage cert. it says her father was Robert Macleod 1st Seaforth Highlanders (deceased)
I was told at Edinburgh register office that children born to service men serving abroad in those days did not HAVE to be registered, the choice was theirs to make.

Evelyn

Evelyn Report 14 Aug 2012 11:42

I should have said Major 1st Seaforth Highlanders ( probably a flight of fantasy)

wisechild Report 14 Aug 2012 12:49

Thanks for the pms Evelyn & you too Cynthia for posting.
Obviously the marriage cert will have been done to death, but there´s always the outside chance that someone will spot something......wishful thinking or what.
I don´t know much about military history but I would have thought if he was as high up as a major, there would be some record of him somewhere, even accounting for fires & other disasters, so I can´t help feeling his rank was a bit of a fairy tale(as do many other people it would seem),as was Diane´s name????Can´t find any Minnie Mouses registered around the right time either. ;-)
Or should that be Minnie Mice?
