Make that I will buy them all! Should keep me quiet for a while..... :-D

Out of interest (and despair), I have been googling Springfield Hospital as that is the first time we actually 'catch sight' of Diane.

This is an interesting site with pictures of the now derelict building where, presumably, Diane worked.

Sobering viewing.

Spotted this too......could be that Diane lived on site......may have a word with my nice friendly archivist in Wandsworth to see if she can spot her there.........may get some more names to check through....

In 1930 a Nurses' Home was officially opened by Princess Mary, Countess of Harewood. It provided accommodation for 140 nurses, who had previously lived in side rooms and in the towers of the main building.

I wonder if they ever took staff photos at the hospital??
Just think Diane could have walked in those corridors at some time, sad looking place now isnt it.
I can remember mother saying that sometimes they took patients out for a walk.

Wet and very windy here in the island today.
I have been on the laptop a lot today but have made no progress with mother.

My very helpful archivist at Wandsworth has told me that she has looked at the Electoral Roll for Springfield Hospital -from 1927-1932 but no sign of Diane living there. In that case, Diane must have been renting a room or boarding somewhere. Short of going through the whole of Wandsworth, it's another brick wall. How many brickwalls have we hit so far??? :-(

I've got copies of the two magazines mentioned a few days ago and will get round to contacting them as soon as I can.

Love to Evelyn..... <3

Thanks wisechild,

I had a look and discovered that all research enquiries are directed towards the lady who is already helping me. Ah well. We can but try.

Cynthia does it cost you each time you look at an electoral roll or do you have a sub? Just wondering about checking/discounting any Macleods found in the phone books 1926-1934.

Hi Jooleh,

There hasn't been a charge so far re my asking for look ups on the Electoral Roll for Wandsworth and the very kind archivist has offered to help more if I come up with anything.

I have had a look at the phone directories on Ancestry but nothing could I find. Mind you, it may be better if more than myself check it............any offers?

Hi Cynthia, that's very good of them!

I did lots of looking a while back so will go back and see what I found.I was particularly interested in the info I posted on page 60 - P M Macleod at 22 Terrapin Road 1927 to 1929.
Thanks
Julie

Pm received from Tracey and putting here for all and everyone with any thoughts on this please.

Hi Viv
just had a look at the updates my money is on Diane (or whatever she was known as) being in City of London School for Girls and was maybe taken under the wing as a young lady by the G-F's. I look forward to reading more updates soon

Hi Evelyn
I never thought of Patricia being the female version of Patrick. An interesting thought!

Tracey's thoughts are interesting. I too wondered if Diane had been discovered by the GF"s, perhaps because she had some musical talent. But I also have this strong feeling that there must be some other more substantial connection to them.
I also strongly believe that she must have lived in Scotland at some point- she couldn't have made all the memories of Fort George up.
Like everyone no doubt I just find it really strange that she never mentioned her mother. I did wonder if her mother may have had a mental illness and was in Springfield Hospital and that's why she went to work there or her mother was one of the GF sisters and it was covered up.
If only we could connect her to a Macleod - that would be a major breakthrough!

Hi Jooleh,

I emailed the London School last weekend but haven't received a reply as yet but, of course, it may be half term. Not sure what info they would hold but it's worth a shot.

Evelyn has said that her mother had a soft Scottish accent so Scotland is definitely a 'yes' :-D

As for the hospital, Evelyn has always said that her mother had told her she had worked there and, according to a connection on FB, it was very common for girls from Stornoway to go to London to nurse.

Now, as for the possibility of her mother being one of the GF girls.......I'm not sure we have looked at that............so........I wonder?

I had a look at a WW1 Nurses file while I was at Kew yesterday, for a Catherine Macleod, just on the off chance. The details don't seem to fit anything we know about Diane as Catherine was an QAIMNS Nurse from 1914-Oct 1918 when she left for "urgent private reasons" (no explanation). She had previously been working at the London Hospital, Whitechapel. No age or date of birth given, but she was single and her mother, Mrs Macleod (very helpful- no christian name or initial!) lived at 10 St Bernards Cres, Edinburgh, which was also given as Catherines address in Oct 1918.

Doesn't seem likely for there to be any connection, although the fact that she was a nurse in London is interesting. Perhaps someone could have a look on Scottish/English 1911 census for her, just in case.

Looks like the right Catherine on the 1911, doesn't it? Can her mother be found at the address in Edinburgh?
