I have got my Oh on it now - as he is quite new to the chaing people side of things on line - he seemd to find things I can't - probably because I try too hard -

She must be out there somewhere - you don't have any details of friends she had and if they are still around to be able to share any stories - it may help

I wondered about National Insurance number but googling it i don't think it would help . Evelyn says she has Ration book number so someone might like to look at this to see if it's worth spending the money to get the info (if it will give any new info)
"Accessing the 1939 Identity Card Information"

Your post set me thinking Jan.
She would have had a National Health number too, issued when the welfare state started in 1948.
It may be worth trying to tace that.

Good point.......will contact Evelyn in case she isn't looking in today ..Thanks. :-D

Cynthia

Cynthia Report 24 Sep 2011 12:48

Evelyn is very happy to go ahead with this and I have the relevant ration book number. However, when I look at the site you mentioned Jan, it costs £42 to obtain details.

As Evelyn's mother was married back in 1929, I guess she would have been using her married name for everything after then.... :( It's really anything pre 1929 which would give a bigger clue.........any ideas???

Cynthia.
Have just had a pm from Evelyn & have confirmed to her that the number is her NHS ID. I can remember my original one & the format is the same.
have suggested getting in touch with the Dept of Health to see if they can shed any light.
What was Diane´s married name & does Evelyn have any siblings who would have been born after 1948. If so, the hospital where they were born may still have records.
Grasping at straws here.
(Or even the place where Diane died)
As I explained to Evelyn I only dip in & out of this occasionally, unlike all the dedicated researchers, so I feel a bit as though I´m interfering.

I would really like to see some pictures of Evelyn's mum.

I would so like to put a face to the woman we are seeking

Cynthia

Cynthia Report 24 Sep 2011 19:20

Hi Wisechild, you're not interfering at all, any ideas, suggestions, thoughts, are gratefully received.

Diane's married name was Diane Leslie Roy - she married in 1929.

The first sighting we have of her under her maiden name of MacLeod is, I think, when she was a nurse at Springfield hospital 1927/28.

Before that, she is nowhere to be found.

Quoy....I like the idea....will see if Evelyn may put it on as her avatar.

Thanks again. Cx.

No worries Evelyn. If you want to send me a photo to my private email address, I will put it on the GR homepage photo bit - if that's okay with you of course.

Has anybody tracked down Robert Angus Hugh McLeod in the WW1 service records on Ancestry.
Nothing so grand as Diane says, but in 1918 he was living 34 Coverdale Road, Shepherds Bush & was a reservist with the London Scottish regiment.
Unfortunately no next of kin details.
Also found Robert MacLeod 3rd Batt Seaforth highlanders 4164 in the medals list 1899-1904 Gibralter,Egypt, Malta.
I´m sure someone will already have looked at this, but it seems that half of the battalion was called Macleod.

Evelyn Report 25 Sep 2011 11:03

Quoy now has Dianes photo.
Wise there are far too many Macleods but never the correct one.
I am quite happy for Quoy to publish the photo

The nursing info was checked further back on the thread when it was discovered that Diane worked at Springfield Hospital. No great clues there unfortunately.

I think Fans has checked every military Robert MacLeod she could lay her hands on - even going as far as ordering a death cert for one of them - again, no joy!

The 1921 census would be SUCH a bonus at the moment!

What about a crystal ball or a clairvoyant?
Do we know that Aunt Kate was a Macloud & not a Leslie.
Any clues from the withesses on the marriage cert.?

Evelyn

Evelyn Report 25 Sep 2011 15:40

No Wisechild I do not know Aunt Kates surname, we only surmissed it to be Macleod, it could be anything, I only ever heard mother refer to her as Aunt Kate.
The witnesses on parents marriage cert were his mother and a friend of his who I believe died soon after the marriage, I never knew him

She certainly managed to cover her tracks didn´t she.

Evelyn Report 25 Sep 2011 15:53

I have always been puzzled by the fact that Grandma Roy always said that up until the time mother married that she received a private income, from where or how it was paid grandma never knew. Was this the Lord of the Manor paying for his misdeeds I wonder??????
