Someone may already have looked at this but just in case.......doing a free search on SP 1911 census in Inverness and putting Fort George in the advanced search, there is one Donaldina Macleod and she is 5 years old. I can't get any more info as no credits.

Hi Jooleh, I think Fans has scoured the 1911 with most permutations but, I do have some credits so had a look......nope, she's part of a MacLeod family but not ours! Donaldina seems to have been quite a popular name at the time......goodness knows why! :-S

Thanks anyway.

Jooleh Report 26 Aug 2011 20:57

Thanks for looking Cynthia. I had just wondered if she could be found at Fort George before she went to stay with her cousins. Were any of the children in that family born abroad?
Thanks
Julie

Saw this and wondered if BBC Scotland might be of any help

Do you have Scottish ancestors?

A new series of Digging Up Your Roots begins on BBC Radio Scotland in January 2012, and the producers are looking for people with an interesting ancestor - or just a good tale to tell about their family tree. Email [email protected] if you are able to help.

Thanks for that Pam - I'll have a word with Evelyn and see what she thinks.

Not been on for a while but I still have been looking .

Have we all been searching in the wrong place ???? Double checking things I see that the Rev Donald McLeod was the minister in Tarbat in 1901 and also 1911 .From the records all his children were born in Tarbat

However

"TARBAT, a parish in the district of Easter Ross, county Ross and Cromarty, Scotland. It comprises the villages of Portmahomach, Balnabruach, and Rockfield. It extends in length about 7½ miles from N.E. to S.W., with an extreme breadth of 4½ miles; and is bounded by the Dornoch and Moray friths, and by the parish of Fearn. The land is of a fertile character, and the soil generally light and sandy, with a deep black loam in some parts. Tarbat Ness, the ancient Aræ Finium, is marked by a revolving lighthouse, put up in 1830; it is 175 feet above sea-level, and is visible at a distance of 18 miles. The coast, which is 15 miles in extent, is rocky, but has several natural harbours and small creeks. The village of Tarbat is about 10 miles N.E. of Tain, between Dornoch and Moray friths. In its vicinity are ruins of several castles and of a chapel. Many of its inhabitants are employed in the fisheries, and some in a hemp factory. This parish is in the presbytery of Tain and synod of Ross. The stipend of the minister is about £270. The parish church stands in the centre of the parish. There are a Free church, also a parochial school, Gaelic school, and a private school. The principal modern seat is Geanies."

"BALNABRUACH, a village in the parish of Tarbat, in the county of Ross, Scotland, 8 miles from Tain. It is situated on the peninsula between the Moray and Dornoch Friths."

"PORTMAHOMACK, a village in the parish of Tarbat, county Ross and Cromarty, Scotland, 9 miles E. by N. of Tain. It is situated on Dornoch Frith, under Tarbatness, and is a sub-port to Inverness. There is a pier of about 400 feet, extending along the shore of the harbour, which is low and sandy."

"ROCKFIELD, a hamlet in the parish of Tarbat, county Ross and Cromarty, Scotland, 5 miles S. of Tain. There are also numerous small places and private seats of this name in Ireland."

What do you think ????

Hi Kathy,

My Scottish geography is very sketchy to say the least but, when dealing with Tarbat, I know that Portmahomack has been included and that Stornoway and Ross and Cromarty always seemed to be linked in someway.

Further back I think I mentioned that I had been in touch with the present incumbent of the church at Tarbat who sent me a picture of the house where the MacLeod family lived....it was in Portmahomack.

Don't know about Balnabruach or Rockfield though. Will make some enquries in that direction. Thnaks for that.

Oh yes. Pam.......I've heard back from Evelyn but she is not up to it at the moment. Any other time I think she would have jumped at the chance but, given the circumstances of her poorly husband.............

Sending her lots of love.....such a difficult time for her and the family.

Hi Cynthia

Isle of Lewis is where Stornoway is and the registration distrrict is not the same district of Tarbat Ross and Cromarthy . According to Scotlands People Tarbat is in in Reg No 083 where as Stornoway is Reg No 88
so not the same area .

Hope Evelyn is doing as best as she can

My love and thoughts to her

Well had a quick look on googlemaps -

Stornoway is on the Isle of lewis (as we know) - Tarbat is across the other side of Scotland on the point opposite Lossiemouth one side & Dornoch the other (only places i knew in that area) a fair way up the glenn from Inverness. As the google flies its over 130 miles apart & a ferry crossing. According to Google is a 4 hour drive.

They both look very isolated places - all i can say is Diane certainly picked the areas well to hide herself away in. If she was a wild child then - living in this area in those days would have put a dampner on things for her.

No wonder she escaped to the bright lights of London

I have to admit - i do think this would make a great story for the TV lost & found series.

I love looking back at this thread - all the wonderful people helping out & all the different ideas - its lovely to see everyone all working together to help a friend.

Off to see if I can think of anything else

Hopefull thoughts Evelyn - We are all there for you. <3 <3 <3

Thanks Kathy - when I have scaled my mountain of ironing, I will check all that info out and, hopefully, improve my knowledge of the geography of Scotland. Please keep searching - it all helps. :-D

Glad you're enjoying the thread Tabitha but wouldn't it be wonderful to one day put up the word COMPLETED after the heading??? :-D

Thank you everybody for your help and concern.
Taking Ron for more blood tests this morning checking that he is fit enough to have more chemo tomorrow, at least he slept last night after takinfg a sleeping tablet, which means I also got some sleep.
I wonder if we will ever know Dianes roots, had I not lived with her for almost 19 years I would say she never existed.
Much love to you all my friends

Having had a quick run through of things Kathy, I think the research done so far as Stornoway/Tarbat etc. are concerned is okay but will check with Fans to make sure.

Rev. Donald MacLeod was born on the Isle of Lewis but became Minister of Tarbat church........if Diane remembered that family, I guess it was whilst they were living in Tarbat. The other three places - Portmahomack etc. are all close by. It looks very isolated, rugged and cold on the pics.

Anyone else going cross-eyed??? :-D

I just hope that if & when Evelyn finds her, she makes it quite clear how much trouble she has caused by being economical with the truth.

Hi all

I thought the reason Rev Donald Macleod and co were selected was because his wife was Kate and they had an Ishbel and a Donald .

Diane said she stayed in Stornaway so it can't be this family as they appear to have lived in Tarbat a very long time .

Had a look at 1901 census and the only families I could find in Stornaway who had children Donald and Isabella ( no Ishbels ) with mother Catherine ( no Kate's ) were
Donald Stuart 6 mths f Donald
Donald Mackengie 14 yrs f Malcolm ( this is probably a wrong transcription and it should be MacKenzie )
Donald Macaulay 12 yrs f John

I wasted 6 credits on 1911 c checking Donald Stuart but it turned out to be the wrong family and I don't have any more credits .

Of course Donald or/and Ishbel could have been born after 1901 !!!!!

Can't see boys in their teens being very happy to play with a small girl thats why I thought the Stuart boy was a more likely bet

Back to the drawing board

I dont know for sure but feel that Dianes cousin Donald must have been older than her as it was he that explained to her about Monthlies, when the dreaded thing happened to her when they were out on the peat bogs

We'll be wearing that drawing board out soon Kathy :-D

Gee thanks for that towel Fans.....just what we needed....not!

Here is part of a rather long email I received from the present incumbent of Tarbat church earlier this year.

******
OK -- born 1858. At that time Lewis was in Ross-shire. Lochs is a parish on the Isle of Lewis.

Minister of Tarbat Parish means he was the Church of Scotland minister in the parish of Tarbat which includes the village of Portmahomack.
E.C. is almost certainly an abbreviation of "Established Church" -- i.e. Church of Scotland. I can only assume that Private House means that it wasn't a hotel or lodging house or hospital or prison or whatever

Large families are nothing unusual among ministers in this community -- I have nine children myself, without any twins among them :-)

Donald MacLeod came as minister of Tarbat in 1885 and continued to 1920 in Tarbat living in the Church of Scotland manse in Portmahomack.

*********

So that family of MacLeods were in Tarbat for 35 years before moving on....I can remember where to but will check.
