Looked at 3 more R Macleod/ Mcleod WW1 Officers files today

WO339/13344 Ronald McLeod. Born 17/2/1900, Father Roderick (unknown to me). Pte 1/28157. Rejected in application for Flying Officer, 30/11/17. Address The Gardens, Callendar House, Falkirk.

WO339/93853 Reginald Edward James McLeod. Born 12/10/1871, Middlesborough. Joined Leics Regiment as a boy, 1885. Discharged to pension Sept 1908, rank Regimental Quartermaster Sergeant. Appointed as Yeoman Warder of HM Tower of London on discharge and served as such until 23/11/14. Lt, Honorable Artillery Company 5/12/14, Lt Army Ordnance Depot 1916, Capt RAOC 1918,. Left Army Sept 1919, when his address was 191 Wimbledon Park Rd, London SW15. Working as labourer at Ordnance Depot at Bramley, Hants in 1925. Still alive on 20/8/35, when his address was Beausile, Bramley, Hants

WO339/138479 Robert McLeod Born 29/12/1885, Downe, Perthshire. Single in Nov 1917. Address in 1917 8 Balkerach St, Downe. Occupation Salesman and Commercial Traveller. Joined Highland Light Infantry 14/9/14. Company Quartermaster Sergeant 19545

WO339/131947 Robert Charles McLeod. Born 1894. Previously Sergeant 85762 (Canadian Army). Lived Lansdowne, Canada. Bank clerk. Applied for appointment to RFC.

WO339/113416 Robert McLeod. Born 1/1/1898. Father John, 18 Roxburgh St, Greenock. Previously 175613 RFA. Discharged to commission 2/6/1918.

I've looked at all those files before so I knew really that none of them would fit. Just wanted to put all the info on the thread. I don't think he was an officer with the Seaforths under that name, but who knows what his real name was or which regiment he was with, or when or even if he served at all!

Only suggestion I can think of is that Robert was perhaps his 2nd christian name rather than his 1st, or that for some reason he was known as Bob by the family & colleagues & it was assumed that his name was Robert.
For example, I had an Uncle who was universally known as Mick, but his name was actually Horace. Only ever heard my aunt call him that.
This thought doesn´t make the search any easier.

Good work searching all those Ann. My thinking is that I do believe there was a Robert MacLeod who was father to Diane but not so sure about the officer part, we all have some myths in the family tree somewhere along the line, I think he was probably a regular serving soldier in Seaforth Highs, possibly stationed at the barracks and courted Diane's mother and she was illegitimate, Diane maybe changed her surname to that of her Father's as she got older but might never actually have known him. Diane obviously didn't like her first name and changed that too. There are no birth records of a Diane Leslie or MacLeod so we are back to needle in a haystack searching again.

Im not nearly as proficient at researching as you all are, but I continue to try and assist!

I know we have struggled to find any Leslie/MacLeod links in the UK, but I have found these records on familysearch today - the only time I have seen Leslie MacLead:

You might well be right but if Diane gave his rank wrongly, what's to say she didn't give his name and regiment wrongly too!

I am being lazy, but could someone explain what proof of identity you needed to provide for a wedding in 1929?

After 1929 Diane would have her marriage certificate, but what would she have used before then?

Pretty sure that in those days, proof of ID was not required.
In any case, Evelyn said right at the beginning that all the family documents were lost during the war, which is why she has such a problem now.
Like doing a jigsaw without the picture. :-( :-(

It's a long time until we get the next set of census records and Diane should be there.

Dad was convinced that his mother was truthful and her strong opinion about the restrictions of living in a deeply religious community in Stornoway was something that stuck with him.

Dad was a civil servant, but I guess that because his mother was dead they didn't check her information when they cleared him.

The family records rings true, they moved quite often when Dad was growing up.


I would consider going to Stornoway if I thought there was anything to be gained from it.

Don’t forget to browse the site, as it has lots of useful information, and annual membership is very reasonable. As well as lots of data from church records, it also has information from wills, bonds etc.
