James may have arrived in Australia from U.K. by a whaling ship some time before 1828.In the N.S.W. Australia Muster a James Williams was listed as a free Prodestant carpenter with Thos Street Sydney who owned whaling ships.Sometime in the 1830s James arrived in New Zealand and was a storekepper carpenter at a whaling station at Cloudy Bay .
On the 20th April 1840 the ship "Bolton ' arrived in Wellington N.Z. with Jane Florance and her family Jane and James were married on the beach at Petone on the 4th July 1840
