if no trace of him in england then maybe he did go to america which was said he had done i know ist name is stephen his dad james. is there somewhere i can check to see if he is abroad. is there anyone can help me check usa

hi susan read your pm thanks all info i have is that stephen hornibrook married at 22, in 1949 he is down as fish fryer, and that at time of marriage they bth lived in sutherland ave w.9 and fathers name is james hornibrook and his profession is down as army pensioner. speaking to my cousin earlier he seems to remember him being american, and that after i was born he wanted to go back to states and legally adopt me, so he must have been around still in late 50s, is there a way i can find info to see if his family are from states. keep drawing a blank here

I think John Patrick here, maybe your Stephen.
I can't find a Stephen in UK or anywhere else in fact!

James Hornibrook is born in Ireland c 1894, there is a medal card for a James, he could have been in the Dublin Irish Fusiliers, hence the army pension.
The 1930 census says they arrived in 1924, hence John P being born in Massachussets.

John P called up for the second world war.

There is a tree on ancestry with this man, he has kindly put an email address which I will pm you. This tree holder gives John's death in Surrey
March 1983, but he is also on the social security index in the usa:

I am 50/50 on this one, but lots of co-incidences!!

thankyou deborah for all that info that was good of you, i am still confused because on his marriage cert it states his name as stephen, if his name was john patrick would he not have to state that on marriage cert, not to sure myself, i can remember my mum saying that sometime after 1956 not sure when that he went back to the states, thats all the info i have on him and that his dad called james. where to go now

This is the john Stephen posted before, who dies in London, you should order this one to see who the father is, so he can be eliminated.It seems to be the only Hornibrook with stephen in the name.

Someone has this John on a tree, the mother is given as Elizabeth O'Driscoll , father blank. As alot of the Hornibrook's were in Ireland maybe Elizabeth and her partner married there. I tried to find a marriage for Ireland, no luck, the Hornibrook's there are coming from Cork, and County Kerry.

It might not be this John but I checked again for other possible Stephens with mistranscriptions...no luck.

There seem to be two possible candidates for your Mr. Hornibrook.


One was born in December 1927 in England (birth registered in early 1928) and died in England.

That one had sisters born in 1930, 1933 and 1940. You can see two of them at FreeBMD

(the information on this John's birth record). There is one more who is shown at Ancestry. I'm not going to put their names and birthdates here because they could well still be living. (Oh well, I see it's been done already anyhow.)

The other is the John P Hornibrook in the US whose father's name and other details match.


Both of them are excellent possibilities.

Instead of keeping on asking more questions, like about divorces, you need to focus on those two and see what you can find out about them.

There isn't a Stephen Hornibrook jumping out of the woodwork to fill your bill, so you have to investigate what there *is*.

Deborah has given you contact information for at least one of the two people who have these two individuals in their trees. You need to get in touch with them. If it means taking a free trial subscription at Ancestry so you can contact the other through that system (and give them your email address), you need to do that.

You should get the birth certificate for the John S Hornibrook born in 1928. That will state his father's name and occupation. As far as I can tell, you've had that information for some time but haven't pursued it. You can't tell whether he is your man unless you do!

Nobody can do those things for you! You could wait 5 years, and keep nudging your thread and asking for someone to give you info, and hope that someday, somebody who knows all your answers joins this website, or googles the names you're looking for and finds this thread -- or you could follow the two trails you have now and find out whether one of them is yours.

People often called themselves what they wanted when they married. That was less likely later in the 20th century, but it still happened.
