Cumberland in 1830s

My ancestor Ritson Frears lived at Muncaster and Ravenglass. In 1830 he sailed to Bermuda with his wife and son to work as a carpenter at the Royal Naval Dockyards, returning in 1841 to Cumberland. What govt. scheme or whatever could have taken a young craftsman from the wilds of Cumberland to Bermuda at that time?
He was not in the navy.

He had eight children altogether so there must be many descendants in this line.

I am researching in particular his eldest daughter Barbara born in 1835 and her husband John Henderson about whom I can find nothing except that at the time of the marriage in Whitehaven he was an iron miner, address given as Arlecdon. Father is Martin Henderson, deceased.

I would be grateful for any pointers about these topics, however brief.
