Howie vs Howe

I have been told there is uncertainty over the correct spelling of Howe vs Howie, from the Larbert/Falkirk areas in my family. I know there are branches of both, but has anyone any information about an instance of the spelling of Howie being changed to Howe or vice versa?
Or alternatively can anyone give any information on John Howie/Howe (c1810) who married Clementina Howie (c1810) on 20/03/1845?
Any info would be great.
Thanks
Shiona
