As you know your parentage Why not make a tree from the info you have. Your children will know their ancestors. I have grandchildren , and the things they have asked , have been "What did you do when you where evacuated !! AT the time they where studding ww2. I don't think thay are bothered too much about great grand parents and further back.In the future they will be able to find out even more on the web. I am sure it must be irritating not to have the documents, but you do have the answers, which is more than some have With modern technology , they look to the future , not the past. I am leaving a family tree in the hope that maybe , the great grandchildren , of which we currently have 2, may be interested. It.s only in old age when you think about the past, and wish you asked questions about family

Just wanted my files because to feed down to my children including birth and stepchildren because they are always asking me questions some I could not answer.
Thank you very much for your reply much appreciated.
Agreed about Hitler's in Council offices, but this gentleman from the council that is helping me so much I cannot thank enough.

Wish luck on your search. I watch the TV programs where they reunited lost families. I guess the time scale is too old to meet your mother, but I do hope you get some some answers . Too many little hitlers in council offices these day . Fraudsters can gain answers about persons, so any adopted person should most definitely have access to records. I guess some mothers do not want to be traced, but you should atleast be able to find out about YOUR past. Data Protection !!!!!

Darkie, a few years ago my friend who was adopted in London asked me to help her trace her mother. We did not finish the process because she became uncertain about meeting her mother halfway through but here are some of the steps we took intially;
contact Norcap http://www.norcap.org.uk/ 01865 875000 They specialise in helping Adults Affected by Adoption in many ways and tracing relatives should you wish to do this. They also have a flow diagram showing the steps to follow. They are so supportive and good to speak to. They are a charity. Parents seeking their adoptive children can also register with Norcap who will reunite them - but only if the adoptive child wishes to do so.
I think Barnadoes offer a similar service.
There is also a directory of adoption agencies past and present and if they no longer exist it states who holds their records. You might be able to get a copy of this from the local library. Can't remember where I got my copy from but it was a family histroy archive - perhaps the PRO or Family Records Centre. You might be able to buy this online. Perhaps try amazon too?
My friend knew when she was adopted and from that I think we were was able to find her adotption order / registration and original name at the family records centre. Which is now closed but it is the GRO. You could call the GRO also see their page:-
Adoptions orders http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/faqs-adoption.asp
This gave us the name of the court where the aoption was arranged so we approached the local court to request the release of her papers. Think that was as far as I got but we made great progress.
I recently reunited my second cousins with a brother they never knew they had and he with sisters he never knew about. They were all elderly. He died last month but they really made the best of the year they all had together. Nobody had any regrets - except they'd wished they had been united much earlier. But it does not always work out successfully. Curiosity and the need to know is the driver but be prepared that you may not like everything you find out - which is fine provided you prepare yourself to accept any good withany bad.
Good Luck!!! DNA

Hi, Unfortunately even if you were to be successful in obtaining your files they may well be censored to a point that they are virtually useless to you. You may well have the "Right" to your file, but all I have found out is that Social Services and Archive Departments holding such information, run scared of the Data Protection Act and deny / hide everything. Good luck Herbert

Hi Julia May
I took your advice and got my MP involved in this matter and it turned out that it all led to the original person I was dealing with at the beginning of it all, still the same answer files destroyed they still cannot tell me when they were destroyed and contracdictory e-mails once again from the person I was originally dealing with at the children's services
My MP was very quick and very helpful and my MP said that if I am still having difficulties then to contact him again which I will do so as soon as possible.

Hi Julia
Thank you very much for your advice I will try this but I don't hold out much hope with my local MP here.
As when my local MP has been approached by my husband for other reasons he never ever receives any replies from him.

It is time someone gave the Social Services an hammering in all Districts. Today I spoke again to my Foster Daughter only to be told that she was approached to make statements against people she was in the care of years ago. Having stated that this was Nonsense SHE WAS DISMISSED out of hand as they went forward to Convict people who my Foster Daughter Swears were set Up. Sad World. Janice

Given the hammering that Social Services departments have taken recently, I would suggest you contact your local MP and ask for their help. It's amazing what can suddenly happen when an MP gets involved.
Good luck in your search

Hello Darkie I do hope that you at last find the answers to your past, I for one have lost all Faith in Social Services at least in my area. They never found records of my Fostering? Yet, yesterday I spent 2 hours speaking with one of the young people I Fostered back in 1970s. Something very odd with Social Services Nation Wide. Good Luck Janice

Hi Everyone, that has replied to me on this thread and the member that e-mailed me, thank you very much it is much appreciated
I have just got around to contacting The National Archives and they have information on me in a file lets hope they let me look at all information and not take any information out.
I will have to visit the Archives.
I just can't believe it has taken me so long to try and find information on myself as I had been going round in circles so anyone else that might be in a similar position to me I say please do not give up.

Hi Darkie, and everyone else - I was both born and adopted in Surrey. They say they have never heard of me, nor of my full sister, also born in Surrey. We were both adopted, but to different people so I am still trying to find my sister. I was adopted through Guildford County Court. I suspect my sister may have gone to Guildford, or nearby too.
I have my original name and my original birth cert. and also the birth name of my sister. I traced all the rest of my family and half-siblings.............still Surrey say they have not any records for either of us. I was in a childrens' home for a short while, probably my baby sister was too. It is long since closed of course, it was called Aigburth Nursery. My birth names were Eileen Muriel..........born in 1944 My sister's birth names were Jennifer Ann............born 22nd September 1945. Our birth mother's names were Muriel Ethel M.........nee H......... Maybe I should try Guildford County Court, but it is all so long ago I would be surprised if they still have any records. Eileen birth name born 1944 adopted 1946 found birth family 1972

Hi Everyone
Sorry I have taken so long to reply, I have had a lot of pressure on me lately with my son who has recently lost his job so I have had to support him a lot on lots of advice. (not having much luck lately am I? but I don't suppose I am the only one in the world to suffer that)
Thank you very much for your replies and yes Wendy they do need a kick up the bum and I am willing to give them half a dozen kicks or more SS and the local authorities are so secretive if the boot was on the other foot and they were in my position they would feel exactly the same as I do.
Thank you Shiela for all your help but I looked for a phone number for them on the website still cannot find anything. Thank you Paul I will try that site. Janice I can't believe that they have no records of you as a foster parent (talk about incompetence with a capital I) they must have some records of of you somewhere but they are not really bothered and social Services are absolutely hopeless they were hopeless when I was in care and they still are. Wendy, I will try my local county court and see if they are able to help me. Paul thank very much for the advice.
Thank everyone once again it is much appreciated.
Regards
Darkie
